Examines the emergence and operation of alternative public schools in six U.S. cities.  Focuses on the magnet schools and their programs in Boston and Houston, the federally funded Experimental Schools Program in Berkeley and Minneapolis, and exemplary school programs in Cambridge and St. Paul.
