An example of the circular formation with the cantor in the middle as the dancers begin to dance around him. (01:27)

2. Video 2.2 – Performance of tumbe carnaval by the Chilean Afro-descendant NGO Oro Negro during the January 6, 2009 celebration of the Pascua de Negros in downtown Arica, Chile. Note that this street parade format on pavement means that dancers are in linear formation. The break in which the dancers thrust their hips invokes the moment in which dancers historically tried to knock over their partners. (01:19)

3. Video 2.3 – Performance of the tumbe (or tumba) carnaval by the Chilean Afro-descendant cultural and political organization Lumbanga as part of their September 14, 2008 show “La historia y costumbres de los afroariqueños,” script written by Cristian Báez Lazcano. This reenactment show an interpretation of the tumbe with dancers moving in a circle and the women knocking over their partners when the word “Tumba!” is yelled. (03:12)
