Researchers often get contradictory advice from professors, colleagues, reviewers, and textbooks on how to deal with clustering across time and space. Economists argue strongly for “fixed effects” models. Psychologists and statisticians more typically push for “mixed effects” models. Most applied researchers in the social sciences are told to use a Hausman test to decide between fixed and random effects. This is complicated by the fact that different disciplines, articles, and books use very different terminology and notation to describe models. This lecture will walk participants through the basic problems of clustered data and translate the solutions from economics, psychology, and statistics into a common language. We will focus on how to make practical decisions on model choices for linear and nonlinear models, what problems can crop up, and how to describe/justify your methods to different audiences.

In this workshop we will review the most popular nonparametric and semiparametric estimation methods, focusing on cross section observations. Standard methods for model estimation in the social sciences rely heavily on functional form assumptions and distributions of unobserved components. Nonparametric and semiparametric methods relax these assumptions, reducing the risk of misspecification errors. These methods are applicable to a wide variety of estimation problems. We will illustrate some of these applications with examples, including density estimation, regression estimation, partially linear models, single-index models, and propensity score methods. In this program, criminologist Joseph D. Lohman sketches the relationship of prison administration to the inmate community and the ways in which the inmates’ group influences the administration. An inmate's views about who really controls the operation of a prison are expressed during an on-location interview. Burke and Lohman explore the prisoner’s role, both legitimate and otherwise, in prison management, and discuss the redirection of this community activity into legitimate channels which a professional staff can provide. Lohman notes the need for constructive outlets for individual and group expression, without which inmate energies are directed into hostile and anti-social channels.

This talk will present a set of standards for the replication documentation (data, code, and supporting information) that authors should assemble and make public when they release studies reporting the results of research based on analysis of statistical data. We will begin from first principles: What purposes is replication documentation intended to serve? And what must be true of the contents and organization of the documentation for a study if it is to fulfill those purposes? We will then describe how these general principles are embodied in the particular documentation standards we propose. Further discussion will include: (i) a comparison of our proposed standards with existing guidelines, such as TOPS, DA-RT, the BITSS Manual, and the "data policies" that have been adopted by a number of prominent journals, (ii) using the Open Science Framework (OSF), an on-line file management platform, for assembling and sharing replication documentation, and (iii) the curricular resources that are being produced by Project TIER for teaching and learning reproducible research methods.

When faced with data from various sources, of various types, what do the data tell us, what questions can be asked, and what clues can we find in the data to further our understanding? Unlike traditional "confirmatory" statistics that emphasizes parameter estimation from parametric models and hypothesis tests on their significance, exploratory data analysis takes a different approach to analyzing data, one that avoids any pre-conceived model that the data must fit and allows the data to suggest the model. EDA tools reveal patterns in the data given the inevitability of violation of traditional assumptions (e.g., no outliers or missing values, Gaussian distributions, independence, etc.). This session introduces some of these tools and illustrates their value, including displays for univariate data, displays for multivariate data, checking the shape of distributions, robust-resistant two-way analyses, fitting skewed/heavy-tailed distributions, and assessing uncertainty. The tools will be illustrated using real data from various fields.
