On a farm where 100,000 laying hens produce enough eggs in one day to feed cities the size of Schenectady; New York; St. Joseph, MO; and Kalamazoo, Michigan, we see how eggs are gathered, cleaned and graded, and sent to market. On the dairy farms we see modern milking methods and milk being transported to a manufacturing plant. Processes involved in bottling milk and making cheese are seen, and the ice cream bar section is visited.

This digital project is a part of my larger research project on exploration and photography in the Russian empire’s borderlands in Siberia and Central Asia (Mapping and Photographing Asiatic Russia: Imperial Landscapes of Exploration) and it will serve as an analytical instrument to bring data from different disciplines to visualize research results and make this project available to scholars and general public. This project aims to develop a digital map with data, using georeferencing, to link texts, historic maps, and photographs to examine scientific exploration and colonization of the Semirechie region in Central Asia in the early 20th century. This project will locate and visualize expeditions led by Prof. Vasilii Sapozhnikov (1862-1924), a botanist and glaciologist, and give a new possibility for complex interdisciplinary analysis of his findings and representations of the region. When this project is completed, it can be used for further analysis of the environmental transformation of landscape if it is linked with other data, including scientific records and aerial photography. This project can be also used as a prototype for analysis and visualization of other expeditions, like Sapozhnikov’s expeditions to the Altai mountains.
This research project links history of science and exploration, history of the Russian empire and its borderlands in Asia, visual studies, environmental studies, and spatial history, examining writings, photographs, and maps produced as a result of the expeditions in Jeti-su [Semirechie] in the late 19th-early 20th century. It aims to identify a role of scientific exploration in imperial colonization of the region and how explorations in geography, geology, glaciology, and botany represented the region as a territory and a natural resource to be incorporated into the empire. I will present this work-in-progress discussing steps taken, reflecting on the learning curves and research experience creating a database to collect and organize data I need for making ArcGIS web map, learning ArcGIS Pro for mapping the expeditions to Semirechie and Altai and using ArcGIS StoryMaps applications to visualize and present my research.

Peggy McClelland rose to production manager at WTTV, Bloomington-Indianapolis, in 1987. In 1989 she left for KFVE-TV in Honolulu, Hawaii, to be production manager. Peggy returned to Indianapolis and WTTV in 1995. She served as Executive Producer for the statewide Hoosier Millionaire telecast. She later moved to WISH-TV, where she created the successful one hour “Indy Style,” which for over 10 years was the only daily local live lifestyle program in Indianapolis. She served as the program’s Executive Producer, and in 2021 was a driving force behind the show’s rebranding to “Life.Style.Live!”

This project will examine the digital component to my dissertation concerning two housing developments in Chicago’s Bronzeville community. The privately developed Lake Meadows and the public developed Clarence Darrow Homes went on divergent paths and through data visualization we can see how and why these housing complexes varied in their development. The humanities offer a way to tell the story of housing development but a the digital world offers a way to tell this story to a wider audience. Data visualization offers researchers a way of changing how we use data and how data can tell a story will bridging the gap between the digital world and the humanities.
A narrator recites a couple of lines from the Charge of the Light Brigade and recounts how throughout British military history soldiers carried a Wilkinson sword. The narrator then states how Wilkinson razors have inherited the same quality as the swords they produce.
While not all research data can be made publicly available, many funders would like to see the research data generated by their funding dollars made more accessible. Combined with the emergence of journal data availability requirements, there is a strong trend towards openness for access to research data. In October 2020, the Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing was released. This policy requires submission of a Data Management and Sharing Plan at the time of proposal as well as release of the data, whether access is open or controlled, to be made “no later than the time of an associated publication, or the end of the award/support period, whichever comes first.” When this policy goes into effect in January 2023, awards will include the approved DMS Plan in the Terms and Conditions, at which point IU will become legally responsible for complying with the DMS Plan. In this talk the IU Data Management Plan Working Group will give a short presentation on these upcoming changes, some resources to assist faculty, and answering questions.

Today beneath our feet we find dwarf plants which once were green giants of the Coal Age. We may hold a fossil in our hands of a plant that live 250,000,000 years ago, yet looked very much like a fern of today. The club mosses, horsetails and ferns, mostly miniature plants in northern forests, once grew to be 60-1000 feet tall in the warm, damp climate of the Carboniferous Period. Out of a terrarium, which you might set up in your living room, will unfold this story of a past age of plant life. You will find out how these simple plants reproduce by spores, and you’ll learn how to keep them in a miniature world.
Modern reptiles have body structures and characteristics much like their giant ancestors of long ago. This will be an introduction to the contemporary reptiles, the ones living now which we can watch and observe and study. On this program, Meyer Bornstein, who is studying biology at Northeastern University, will introduce through living examples the four kinds of reptiles; alligators, lizard, snakes and turtles. He will tell you about their habits, and show you how he cares for and learns from reptiles as pets.

Turtles are reptiles along with snakes, lizards and crocodiles. The turtle has a remarkable history, too. He has been around for 200 million years and is relatively unchanged from his early ancestors. On this program you’ll find out about the turtle’s adaptations for his kind of life, for instance the way he breathes. Animals with lungs usually use their ribs to aid in expansion of the chest for breathing, but since the turtle’s ribs re part of his armor of shell, he cannot do this. What does he do? You find this out along with meeting several species of turtles and learning how to tell the age of these long-lived reptiles. Fifteen-year-old Frank Maurer, of Newton, Mass. is the guest of Mrs. Grimes. He is generally interested in science and especially in turtles, frogs, and snakes which he keeps as pets.
Many people fear all spiders to such an extent that they have never explored this interesting world of living things. Only a few spiders are harmful to human beings, and the other thousands of kinds are often shunned because of these. Here is a new insight into the spider, a creature with eight eyes, glands to produce several kinds of silk, and instinctual knowledge to build snares so complicated and beautiful that man has to admire their design and efficiency. On beautiful film, taken by Charles Walcott, you’ll see Charlotte, (Aranea cavatics, the barn spider that EB White wrote about in Charlotte’s Web) spin her web and catch prey. Other film sequences will show how a funnel-web spider uses her sheet web, and how a crab spider, camouflaged like a flower, needs no web at all but awaits his victim on a plant.
The ants are social insects with a fascinating story of division of labor and social organization. Their history of how this social structure developed from very simple beginnings to more complicated systems is interesting too. You’ll find that some ants eat protein food while others are vegetarians, and you’ll discover that the kind of society which ants maintain is related to their food habits. Robert Willey, an entomologist, will demonstrate these things with live colonies of ants. You’ll learn too how to keep an ant colony and what kinds of questions about behavior of ants you might answer by observation. On film, you will see an ant herdsman tending the aphid cows and stoking them to secure their sweet honeydew.

In the case of mammals, bones can tell us a lot. Form the extinct mastodon and mammoth, or the ancient horse, one can learn lessons about the development of the mammals by merely examining the teeth and bone structures these early creatures left behind. You will meet the mammals and learn about their classification and development by examining skulls and live animals. Six orders of mammals will be considered: the Marsupialor opossums; the chiroptera or bats; the Carnivora or carnivores; the Artiodactyl or even-toed (like the horse); the Rodentia or rodents; and the Lagamorpha or rabbits.

In this program, criminologist Joseph D. Lohman outlines the extent of inmate unemployment and describes the work opportunities needed. Filmed scenes illustrate some of this work and a prison inmate describes his employment experiences. Alexander and Lohman indicate ways in which lack of work and “make work,” active idleness contribute to the maladjustment of inmates. They discuss the results of an increase in constructive prison employment.
In this program, host Lohman examines the development of large prisons and the treatment of inmates in this type of institution. Film clips illustrate the masses of inmates confined and a prisoner tells of his life in such an institution.
