Lesson 11 from Math Wise a program that teaches mathematics as a means to practical ends. The program shows how math applies to problem-solving in the everyday world and aim to help students to use math skills in their own lives. Los Angeles television personality Stephanie Edwards is the program's host. In this episode the city council wants to pass a bill that would prohibit commercial use of the marina. That would sacrifice Cynthia's sailing instructions. But just who is in favor of restricting use of the marina, and why? It takes a while for Cynthia and her friends to determine who to ask. As a result of that sample, Cynthia and her friends discover that the real impetus for the bill was that marina members were sick of an old sea dog's clunky boat. But he wants to show a council member that his boat is getting cleaned up.

More than four decades have passed since the advent of the new folkloristics. Assessments of this revolution tend to narrowly focus on performance theory and not on whether the broader promises of this era have been realized, especially in areas of cross-disciplinary research. This address will look specifically at how attitudes toward historical scholarship have changed within the discipline of folklore and how we have constructed our own disciplinary histories during this postrevolutionary phase. Finally, the address will look to the future and whether we are reconstructing our past in our current graduate training in the discipline.

Meta-Analysis encompasses a suite of statistical techniques for drawing generalizable conclusions from a large number of empirical studies that examine the same research question. While used extensively in the experimental sciences, these techniques have only recently begun to be used with some frequency in the social sciences. After providing a brief introduction to meta-analysis, this session will illustrate how techniques common in econometrics can be coupled with the statistics of meta-analysis to generate methods for estimating meta-regression models that can be used to synthesize results from non-experimental research from the social sciences. I demonstrate the validity of these techniques and I illustrate their utility through meta-analyses of research examining (1) inequities in the distribution of environmental risk and (2) the effectiveness of educational vouchers.
Web scraping is a method of extracting and restructuring information from web pages. This workshop will introduce basic techniques for web scraping using popular open-source tools. The first part of the workshop will provide an overview of basic HTML elements and Python tools for developing a custom web scraper. The second part will enable participants to practice accessing websites, parsing information, and storing data in a CSV file. This workshop is intended for social scientists who are new to web scraping. No programming experience is required, but basic familiarity with HTML and Python is helpful.
NaLette Brodnax is a data scientist and fourth-year doctoral student in the Joint Public Policy program administered by the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Department of Political Science at Indiana University. Her research interests include education policy, policy analysis and program evaluation, and quantitative research methodology. As a graduate assistant for the Center of Excellence for Women in Technology, she is working on a number of projects intended to expose women to technology and to support women using technology in their studies and careers. Prior to entering the doctoral program, NaLette spent nine years in corporate finance roles, managing large data sets and developing financial models for large companies such as Abbott Laboratories and Nokia. She holds a BSBA from The Ohio State University with a concentration in Finance and a Master's in Public Policy from Loyola University Chicago.
