Teaching Film Custodians abridged classroom version of a Cavalcade of America television series episode, "Mightier Than The Sword" (season 1, episode 13) which originally aired on March 18th, 1953 on NBC-TV. This pre-Revolutionary War drama focuses on the 1734 court case in which Royal Governor William Cosby of New York charged John Peter Zenger with libel because he printed the truth about corruption in Cosby's administration. The outcome of this trial established the principle of freedom of the press. The film shows Cosby arresting Zenger and disbarring James Alexander, Zenger's lawyer, on trumped-up charges. Travelling to Philadelphia, Alexander persuades Alexander Hamilton, one of the oldest and most respected attorneys in all the provinces, to take Zenger's case. Hamilton convinces the jury that publishing the truth is not libelous, resulting in Zenger's acquittal and establishing a precedent in American jurisprudence which would be adopted as a principle of law in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution 57 years later when the Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791.

What constitutes a meaningful difference in your NSSE results? With large samples it is common for very small differences to be statistically significant. That's why effect sizes, which provide a measure of "practical" significance, are so important. Based on a recent analysis of statistical comparisons of Engagement Indicators and High-Impact Practices, we have derived new recommendations for interpreting small, medium, and large effect sizes. In this webinar, we will explain our recommendations and invite participants to consider their use with their NSSE results.

The year 2013 marks an important milestone for the National Survey of Student Engagement, with the first substantial update to the survey since its inaugural administration in 2000. In this discussion session, participants learned about survey updates, including changes to survey items and benchmarks along with issues related to transitioning to the new survey (e.g., longitudinal comparisons), and, most important, were invited to give feedback on new reports and resources.

NSSE research analysts have developed a new framework for collecting and presenting evidence for reliability, validity, and reduction of bias. There a technician demonstrates osmotic pressure and clarifies the student's questions. This film addresses the following concepts: 1) Cells receive air and liquid through cell walls and tissues; 2) cells release waste products as liquids and gasses through the tissues; 3) diffusion of molecules of salt with molecules of water; diffusion through a membrane, or osmosis.

Nine out of ten institutions administer NSSE on a regular cycle such as every one, two, or three years. The 2018 administration marks the sixth year of the updated version of NSSE, which means that almost all institutions have multiple years of results from the updated NSSE. Of course, institutions eagerly use their multi-year data to enrich analyses and to answer additional questions about the quality of their student learning experiences. The purpose of this webinar is to discuss some of the best approaches to examining changes and trends in engagement patterns, and evaluating specific campus initiatives.

Samuel Slater, a young Englishman, came to America in 1790, struggling to reconstruct from memory the cotton spinner, the plan of which England guarded to insure a monopoly on cotton manufacture. Unable to reconstruct the English machine, Slater perfects his own spinner and introduces a new industry to the United States.

The film demonstrates the social responsibilities of police officers in a story about a warmhearted patrolman in Union City, New Jersey, who attempts to secure an apartment in a low-cost housing project for an embittered old lady and her five-year-old granddaughter.

FSSE recently released a variety of new resources for using FSSE data and learning more about how faculty contribute to the undergraduate experience. This webinar will give an overview of these resources, and provide examples on how these tools can be used to learn more about faculty who teach undergraduates. Included in the new resources are a new interactive data visualization tool using Tableau, studies of FSSE's validity and reliability, and documents designed to give an informational overview of the content areas covered on FSSE.
More than 1,600 institutions have used NSSE to collect important information about the quality of the undergraduate experience. NSSE provides actionable data through refined measures, easy to use reports, and online reporting. But NSSE was never just about data-gathering-it was created to stimulate improvement. Yet institutional action in response to NSSE results remains an ongoing challenge. This session highlights the most recent report of field-tested lessons from about two dozen institutions that have taken advantage of updated NSSE results to catalyze change on campus to address the question: What facilitates institutional action?

Professor William Henry, a leading scientist of Harvard University and first director of the Smithsonian, recognizes the genius of Davenport's invention and assists him in obtaining financial backing to perfect it. Industrialists of the period, committed to steam power, remained unconvinced of the potential of Davenport's invention.

In this pre-recorded webinar we will explore a number of useful resources that NSSE provides for prospective students and parents as well as for campus use by admissions staff, for new faculty orientation, and in student life training. Since rankings say little about the student experience on any particular campus, results from the NSSE survey help institutions to understand their students and provide a snapshot of how students actually use institutional resources for learning and how they feel about the quality of their educational experience.
With the update to the NSSE instrument, ten new Engagement Indicators were rigorously tested to replace the original Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice. NSSE research analysts have conducted several tests to evaluate the quality of the indicators, including descriptive analysis and studies of validity, reliability, and survey construction. This session will provide useful information for both NSSE 2013 and 2014 participants regarding the development of the indicators, and insights from the analyses. Francis Scott Key seeks out the British flagship on Chesapeake bay and argues successfully for the release of Dr. William Beanes, a civilian who had been taken prisoner following the burning of Washington (August 24, 1814). Obliged by Admiral Cochran to remain with the fleet until the British have attached Fort McHenry, Key's experience in witnessing from shipboard the American resistance to the bombardment inspires him to write the verses that have become our National Anthem.

William Penn's interest in the Society of Friends and freedom of religion leads to his arrest under the Conventicle Act of 1664. He suffers disinheritance by his father, Admiral Sir William Penn, and frequent imprisonment for his beliefs. Recognizing his son's integrity, the elder Penn reinstates him as his heir. Through his father's close association with King Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, Penn is enabled to obtain the grant of land in the American colonies where he establishes a haven of religious freedom.

Retaining students is a key initiative for institutions. This webinar will highlight how to incorporate BCSSE and NSSE data to help inform your institution's retention efforts. In this webinar we will discuss research findings relating engagement and retention as well as explore ways in which NSSE and BCSSE data can be used to supplement retention efforts on your campus. We will also highlight examples of how other institutions have used their NSSE and BCSSE data in their retention plans. Finally, we will encourage participants to think of their own retention efforts and how they might use their NSSE or BCSSE to help improve their efforts. Attendees should make sure they have copies of both the BCSSE and NSSE surveys as this session will identify specific items from each. Copies of the surveys can be found at nsse.iub.edu. We ask that you submit any specific questions you have or barriers you have encountered when using BCSSE and/or NSSE data to help with retention efforts. BCSSE asks entering first-year students about their high school academic experiences, as well as their academic expectations and attitudes regarding their first year of college. These data can be a catalyst for interesting and important discussions among faculty on how to effectively engage students. This session presents and discusses the types of data collected by BCSSE and how it can be used with faculty on your campus.

The updated survey provides new items, topical modules, and more actionable Engagement Indicators, relevant to accreditation. If your self-study and site visit is fast approaching, or 5 or more years out, this session will be useful for your accreditation team.
