As libraries face diminishing resources and increased pressure to provide innovative services, librarians are looking to partnerships that cross departmental and institutional boundaries to bring together the necessary expertise to complete unique, finite projects. Flexibility mixed with creativity on the part of administrators, supervisors and staff in these cooperative efforts is fundamental in making the most of new ideas and new approaches. The online exhibition and discovery portal created for the Lilly Library's War of 1812 related collections are the result of such a collaborative effort, one that brought together expertise from the Lilly Library and outside specialists in metadata description and digitization. This presentation will discuss the results of this project and share relevant issues that will help others who are contemplating such partnerships.

When introduced with forethought and preparation, primary sources can help young students form a tangible link from the immediate present to the remote past. We will discuss our experience introducing elementary school children to medieval illuminated manuscripts and their production, using examples of digital surrogates from the Lilly Library collections which are freely available in the Digital Scriptorium database. The Digital Scriptorium (DS) is a non-commercial online image database of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, or manuscripts made in the tradition of books before printing. DS unites scattered resources from a consortium of many libraries into a union catalog for teaching and scholarly research in medieval and Renaissance studies. It provides unprecedented access to illuminated and textual manuscripts through digital cataloging records, supported by high resolution images and retrievable by various topic searches. DS enables users from the most casual to the most specialized to study the rare and valuable materials of academic, research, and public libraries. It makes available collections that are often restricted from public access and includes not only recognized masterpieces but also understudied manuscripts that have been previously overlooked for exhibition or publication. The Lilly Library became a contributing member of the Digital Scriptorium in 2011. Since that time, we have contributed over 100 images and records to the database.

Community-based approaches have gained attention in recent decades as crucial building-blocks for conservation in many regions of the world. But what does it take to make them work? Almost 50 years ago, leaders of a small community in southwest Madagascar joined with academics in Madagascar and the US to launch a partnership with the declared goal of helping people, forests and wildlife in the area flourish together. I trace the gradual development of this partnership from a “bargain struck” between constituencies with very different interests into a broadly shared endeavor. Today, it offers a model for transcending the small scale and limited impact typical of community-based-conservation initiatives, and a glimmer of hope that they can help safeguard the environment in Madagascar and beyond.

Digitization has completely changed the literary archive. Historians of the novel used to work on a few hundred nineteenth-century novels; today, we work on thousands of them; tomorrow, hundreds of thousands. This new size has had a major effect on literary history, obviously enough, but also on critical methodology; because, when we work on 200,000 novels instead of 200, we are not doing the same thing, 1,000 times bigger; we are doing a different thing. The new scale changes our relationship to the object of study, and in fact it changes the object itself, by making it entirely abstract. And the question arises: what does it mean to study literature as an abstraction and by means of abstractions? We clearly lose some important aspects of the literary experience. Do we gain anything?

This presentation is the first step in an answer to Emily Drabinski’s 2013 challenge to library and information science (LIS) professionals to think about ways in which to ‘queer the library catalog,’ and to represent identity as historically constructed and described. Beginning with a brief outline of the troubled history between marginalized groups and LIS classifications, I examine some of the proposals suggested over the past half-decade by researchers—and their limitations. Instead of starting anew, or using ‘uninformed’ social tagging/folksonomies, I propose a ‘turn’ to the catalogs and controlled vocabularies of archives and special collections, which frequently reckon with unclassifiable material. Following through on that turn, I will discuss how linked data and linked data vocabularies are currently being used by several digital archives—along with some possible lessons for the LIS field as a whole. The radical and subversive use of linked data by queer digital archives offers a partial solution to the conundrum of minoritized and historical representation in the catalog. Finally, I will conclude by describing my own experiences and considerations in the construction of a new linked data vocabulary.

This lecture explores contemporary factors shaping electoral, partisan and policy developments. After late 20th century civil rights reform, and the growing political incorporation of African Americans into electoral politics, social and political scientists tracked the gradual rise in African American political participation, the increasing numbers of elected officials of color, and perhaps most remarkably, the election in 2008 and 2012 of Barack Obama to the Presidency. Donald Trump’s unexpected election in 2016 challenged that framing of the development of successful racial reform. The 150th Anniversary of the 15th Amendment, and the 50th Anniversary of Civil and Voting Rights legislation, offer an opportunity for reflection. This address, delivered after January 2021’s Three Wednesdays: the January 6th Insurrection on the Capitol, the second Trump Impeachment and the Biden Inauguration, considers our options and where the nation heads from here in the 21st century.

The RDF model underlying Semantic Web technologies is frequently described as the future of structured metadata. Its adoption in libraries has been slow, however. This is due in no small part to fundamental differences in the modeling approach that RDF takes, representing a "bottom up" architecture where a description is distributed and can be made up of any features deemed necessary, whereas the record-centric approach taken by libraries tends to be more "top down" relying on prespecified feature sets that all should strive to make the best use of. As digital archives evolve, it is important to ask how they serve their users and to shine a light on their conceptualization and construction. Archives such as the Manchester Digital Music Archive (MDMArchive), a digital community music archive based in England, take community experience and memory as their starting point and guiding focus. This Digital Library Brown Bag, drawing on a case study of the MDMArchive, examines how user-generated digital archives contribute to the development of more representative and democratized repositories of memory through the use of participatory collecting methods and equitable curatorial practices. Based on a dissertation project exploring the motivations behind community archiving and the place of community archives within broader heritage networks, this presentation combines ethnographic research with digital humanities analytical methods to trace trends in archival content over time and outline the overall structure of the online archive. By engaging in these analyses, this multimodal research allows for a larger scale examination of how digital archives are used and speculation about how they can be used to foster and sustain community-based knowledge.

Recently the IU Libraries has seen major progress in managing born digital materials within some of the special collections units. The Born Digital Preservation Lab, established in January 2016, has been developing workflows to image and preserve obsolete media. The University Archives has been a strong partner in establishing end-to-end management of born digital materials, as they have revised accessioning and processing workflows, collaborated with the BDPL on pre-ingest, and have begun working on issues like backlog processing, providing access to researchers, and working with record creators to establish optimal acquisition of digital records. This presentation will discuss how the BDPL and University Archives have been working on these larger challenges. We will also highlight a few current projects, including a collaboration between the BDPL and Media Services to image and provide access to a collection of obsolete PC games.

Until recently, the Variations Digital Music Library provided online access to approximately 30,000 selected recordings and scores from the Indiana University Cook Music Library. First implemented in 1996 with support from IBM and later revised thanks to grants from the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, it served the students and faculty of the Jacobs School of Music until its retirement in January of 2017, prompted by the end of life of one piece of its underlying technology. The recordings hosted in Variations have been migrated to Media Collections Online in 2016. Variations addressed real teaching and learning needs beyond the basic features of discovery and access; migrating the Variations materials to a different tool is only one aspect of the change that this transition represents to Variations users and support staff. Other important aspects to consider are gaps in functionality. Some new features have been implemented in Avalon, the system powering MCO, to address some of the gaps. In this talk we will discuss the transition, the features added to Avalon prompted by the Variations use cases, the remaining functionality gaps we intend to address, and how MCO is being received by faculty and students.

Digital Humanities (DH) centers come in all shapes and sizes, from one-person operations with minimal resources to larger teams with dedicated staff. Many centers continue to wrestle with questions of relevance and sustainability, two aspirations that are often at odds. Centers that register in the middle range—enough resources to make ripples but not enough to scale—are well-positioned to explore a pipeline model that offers scaffolded, staged pathways that build sustainable, permeable competencies in DH research and pedagogy. These pipelines also support cross-institutional partnerships, which strengthen a shared knowledge base and extend communities of practice beyond campus boundaries. The Institute for Digital Arts & Humanities (IDAH) at Indiana University Bloomington developed programs and approaches that follow a pipeline model with an emphasis on capacity-building via curriculum, skill acquisition, and increased support for graduate students. This presentation will provide an overview of the IDAH pipeline model and illustrate a working example of this model following the “journey making” methodology. *A version of this presentation was given as part of the 2020 Annual Meeting for the Association for Information Science and Technology.

The Scholarly Database (SDB) aims to serve the needs of researchers and practitioners interested in the analysis, modeling, and visualization of large-scale scholarly datasets. The database currently provides access to 11 major datasets such as Medline, U.S. patents, National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health funding awards - a total of about 20 million records. The books, journals, proceedings, patents, grants, technical reports, doctoral and master theses can be cross searched. Results can be downloaded as data dumps for further processing. The online interface at https://sdb.School of Library and Information Science.indiana.edu provides full-text search for four databases (MEDLINE, NSF, NIH, USPTO) using Solar. Specifically, it is able to search and filter the contents of these databases using many criteria and search fields, particularly those relevant for scientometric research and science policy practice.

Major research universities are grappling with their response to the deluge of scientific data in its big data and long tail data forms. The latter consist of many diverse and heterogeneous sets, the data are collected via diverse and specialized methods, and are stored in a variety of formats and places. University libraries and their institutional repositories have traditionally been able to handle scientific output. But long-tail scientific data introduce substantial challenges to a traditional document-based repository through its vast heterogeneity, size, and its demands for meaningful discovery and in the case of large data sets, place-based use. In this presentation we will provide a brief overview of the NSF-funded project "Sustainable Environment - Actionable Data" (SEAD), which addresses the challenges of long-tail scientific data with the focus on sustainability science. We will provide an overview of this project and of its discovery and preservation component, called SEAD Virtual Archive. This component is being developed by the Data to Insight Center team at Indiana University in collaboration with IU and UIUC libraries. We will describe main features and our ongoing work on SEAD Virtual Archive and discuss the value and importance of partnerships between data research centers, such as D2I, and the libraries.

Humanity is accustomed to highly variable weather but climate, the average weather over the long term (for example, a human lifetime), was quite predictable. In the US, we established institutions like the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Flood Insurance Program to cushion the shock of those rare extreme events, like landfall of a category 5 hurricane, a once-per-century flood of a major river system, or a severe multiyear drought, but as far as the climate went, we didn’t need to think ahead because it wasn’t changing. Now, those days are gone and we face a continuously evolving climate for decades to come. The most challenging aspect is that those formerly rare events are becoming commonplace, each having the potential to compound the damage from the last. Are our institutions up to the task of dealing with the increasing frequency of hazardous events? Is human psychology capable of the forward planning required to limit the damages? Can our political system provide adequate incentives to policy makers to think and act ahead?

Whom to marry? How to invest? Whom to trust? Complex problems require complex solutions – so we might think. And if the solution doesn’t work, we make it more complex. That recipe is perfect for a world of known risks, but not for an uncertain world, as the failure of the complex forecasting methods leading to the 2008 financial crisis illustrates. In order to reduce estimation error, good inferences under uncertainty counter-intuitively require ignoring part of the available information,. Less can be more. Yet although we face high degrees of uncertainty on a daily basis, most of economics and cognitive science deals exclusively with lotteries and similar situations in which all risks are perfectly known or can be easily estimated. In this talk, I invite you to explore the land of uncertainty, where mathematical probability is of limited value and people rely instead on simple heuristics, that is, on rules of thumb. We meet Homo heuristicus, who has been disparaged by many psychologists as irrational for ignoring information—unlike the more diligent Homo economicus. In an uncertain world, however, simple heuristics can be a smart tool and lead to even better decisions than with what are considered rational strategies. The study of heuristics has three goals. The first is descriptive: to analyze the heuristics in the “adaptive toolbox” of an individual or an institution. The second goal is normative: to identify the ecological rationality of a given heuristic, that is, the structures of environments in which it succeeds and fails. The third goal is engineering: to design intuitive heuristics such as fast-and-frugal trees that help physicians make better decisions.

This lecture will describe the roots of sociogenomics and how it provides a new framework for understanding the relationship between genes and social behavior. The key discoveries underlying this framework will be discussed: 1) Brain gene expression is closely linked with behavior, across time scales, from physiological to evolutionary; 2) Environmentally induced changes in gene expression mediate changes in behavior; and 3) The relationship between genes and behavior is highly conserved, from animals to humans.

On November 2, 2012, colleagues from Indiana University, New York University, Temple University, Ohio State University, University of Houston, the Digital Library Federation, and THATCamp hosted a Digital Humanities & Libraries THATCamp as a pre-conference to the Digital Library Federation Forum held in Denver, Colorado with just over seventy participants. The organizers were largely inspired by the fact that academic libraries- their staff, content, and services- have a long history of supporting digital humanities (DH) initiatives. Often these initiatives are concerned with digital representation of content, discovery, preservation, and analysis activities that are essential to a library's mission. We felt that the DH and Libraries THATCamp would provide a venue to further explore on-going conversations about strategic partnerships and services libraries are uniquely situated to offer to the digital humanities arena, moving away from a support model to a truly collaborative framework in which librarians foster and contribute to DH as experts and scholars in their own right. The outcome of these vibrant discussions resulted in what we, as organizers, hope would equip us with ways through anecdotes, new collaborations and partnerships, and shining examples to better define and promote our unique roles as information professionals. We are particularly interested in: re-visiting or establishing relevant services to foster digital research; securing administrative and organizational support; and shaping outreach endeavors in ways that will grow the community of scholars, students and library professionals in sustainable ways. As an organizer and attendee, I will share several themes and issues that emerged from the THATCamp sessions themes and issues that we face here at the IUB Libraries as we undergo strategic planning and promoting new services like the Scholars' Commons.
