Amos Brown had the longest air tenure of an African American in Indianapolis broadcasting. A graduate of Northwestern University, he began selling air time for WTLC-AM/FM, where he eventually became stationed. Brown was the creator of the market’s first Black-oriented talk show, “Afternoons with Amos.” The program and his weekly column in the Indianapolis Recorder provided a powerful voice for concerns of African Americans. He later was an executive for Radio One stations in Indiana. Brown died of a heart attack Nov. 6, 2015, at the age of 64.

In recent years, concern over the longevity of physical audio and video (AV) formats due to media degradation and obsolescence, combined with decreasing cost of digital storage, have led libraries and archives to embark on projects to digitize recordings for purposes of long-term preservation and improved access. IU's Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative (MDPI) is one of those projects, estimated to digitize 325,000 audio and video items and 25,000 film items overall. Beyond digitization, in order to facilitate discovery and research use, AV materials must also be described, but many items and collections lack sufficient metadata. Join us to learn more about a planned project at IU with experts from University of Texas at Austin School of Information and AVP to create a technology platform and workflow to support the incremental application of both automated and human-based processes to create and augment metadata at large scales for AV collections. The project is called AMP: Audiovisual Metadata Platform.
Academic libraries and archives are dealing with increasing numbers of digital audio and video (AV) files, acquired through both digitization of analog collections and acquisition of born-digital AV resources. While the emergence of low-cost storage options and maturity of streaming platforms has made it easier to store and deliver AV, these collections often lack metadata needed in order to make them discoverable and usable by researchers and other users. Since late 2018, the Indiana University Libraries have been working with partners at the University of Texas at Austin, New York Public Library, and digital consultant AVP to develop an open source software platform, known as AMP (Audiovisual Metadata Platform), that leverages automated machine learning-based tools together with human expertise to build workflows to create and augment metadata for AV resources to improve discovery, rights determination, and use. We will present an update on progress of the AMP project and its successes and challenges to date, including a demonstration of the AMP system and discussion of issues in system design, workflows, and the use of open source and commercial cloud-based machine learning tools. We will also discuss results to date of testing the AMP system using collections from the Cook Music Library and University Archives at IU and from the New York Public Library. This session explores Kurt Vonnegut’s 1968 play, "Fortitude," through a dramatic reading and panel discussion, live-streamed from the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library in Indianapolis, Indiana. Professor Paul Mullins is a historical archaeologist who studies the intersection of materiality and the color line, focusing on the relationship between racism, consumption, and urban displacement. Dr. Mullins’ research has focused on urban displacement in Indianapolis, examining how a century-old, predominately African-American community was displaced and is now reconstructing its history. His scholarship has included archaeological excavations, documentary research, and oral history in Ransom Place, Flanner House Homes, the present-day IUPUI campus, and postwar African-American suburbs.
During this special event, several of Dr. Mullins’ colleagues share how his work has and continues to impact their lives and academic careers. This presentation also shows how Paul Mullins’ research is an exemplary model of IUPUI faculty members translating research into practice for the betterment of their fields and communities.

Audiovisual archivists agree that media holdings must be transferred to the digital domain as soon as possible in order to survive. Because this work requires significant resources, it must be conducted as efficiently as possible. One place to realize efficiencies is in the management of the digitization process. This presentation will explore managing effective and efficient 1:1 as well as parallel transfer media digitization workflows. Using the Indiana University Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative project as a case study, Mike Casey will discuss applying the theory of constraints and adapting software development methodologies to efficiently manage 1:1 digitization workflows. This will include a look at working with bottlenecks, scrum methodology, and the daily standup. Andrew Dapuzzo from Memnon Archiving Services will address issues in regulating parallel transfer workflows including the role of workflow management software, the importance of both human and machine quality assurance in each step of the process, the difficulty in maintaining obsolete machines, overall system design and Total Quality Management. The more efficient the digitization workflow, the more we are able to preserve with scarce resources.

Films show the variety of activities that must be incorporated in a county system. Powers and Lohman delve into the elements necessary for an integrated county system and Lohman and Wright establish how such a system works.
Annual Stephen P. Bogdewic Lectureship in Medical Leadership featuring a conversation between David J. Skorton, MD (President and CEO, Association of American Medical Colleges) and Jay L. Hess, MD, PhD (Dean, Indiana University School of Medicine) on October 14, 2024. Dr. Skorton began his leadership of the AAMC in July 2019 after a distinguished career in government, higher education, and medicine. Shortly after his arrival, he oversaw a comprehensive strategic planning process that established a new mission and vision for the AAMC. It also introduced ten bold action plans to tackle the most intractable challenges in health and to make academic medicine more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
The Stephen P. Bogdewic Lectureship in Medical Leadership was established to honor the contributions of Stephen P. Bogdewic, PhD, who retired in 2019 after 30 years with IU School of Medicine. The annual Bogdewic lecture aims to bring outstanding leaders to IU School of Medicine to share their insights, building on Bogdewic’s “legacy of leadership development by promoting and cultivating a leadership mindset.”
Instrumental variables (IV) methods provide an approach to estimating causal or structural relationships from observational data and have historically been widely used in economics. This lecture will provide an overview of the statistical underpinnings of the IV model and related methods. Particular attention will be paid to providing understanding of the assumptions that allow one to use instrumental variables to estimate causal quantities and the interpretation of the quantities estimated by IV methods. Several examples will be discussed.
This talk builds on last week’s introduction to IPUMS, given by my colleague Kari Williams. Targeting social scientists interested in health research, I will provide an in-depth exploration of the harmonized versions of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data available through IPUMS Health Surveys. The NHIS data, collected by the National Center for Health Statistics, is the longest-running, annual survey of health in the world. It is the primary source of information on topics such as physical and mental health status, chronic condition prevalence, health care utilization, and health care access, making it a critical resource for the study of population health disparities. MEPS, collected by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, is the primary source of information on health care expenditures in the United States. The MEPS Household Component is a longitudinal, household-based survey, collecting information about the same people during five interviews over the course of a two-year period. Topics covered include demographic characteristics and transitions, employment, medical conditions, health care utilization and access, and health care costs. The public use files combine survey data with billing data collected directly from a subsample of health care providers and pharmacies serving MEPS respondents.
Logistic regression is a commonly used type of analysis in the social sciences and other fields in which the outcome of interest is dichotomous. This workshop takes a hands-on approach to utilizing Stata’s logit command. I will provide a brief overview of logistic regression, discuss Stata’s commands (as well as additional post-estimation commands), explain how to interpret the output, and then lead participants in a data analysis example using Stata via IUanyWare. Computers are provided for participants.
This interactive workshop will consider how Open Educational Resources (OER) can alleviate the high cost Indiana University Bloomington undergraduate students pay for course materials (an estimated $1,034 each academic year). Data suggests that students will forgo purchasing expensive course materials, even when they know it will impact their success in the classroom. This session will introduce OER and discuss its benefits, critically think about challenges to OER adoption, and formulate strategies to support IU instructors in finding high-quality OER, adapting them to fit students’ needs, and creating (even in collaboration with students) customized course materials. Please bring a laptop or similar device.
This seminar presents a general overview of propensity score modeling. It begins with a basic discussion of the logic and some notable features of the propensity model. Next we formally present propensity models, and discuss the assumptions underlying the approach. From there we move to a discussion of potential strengths and weaknesses of the propensity models, as well as some common issues to consider when using propensity scores in the research process. The presentation next goes step by step through the estimation process, including the use of different matching procedures and the calculation of robustness tests. The presentation concludes with group discussion and questions.
Python has become the lead instrument for data scientists to collect, clean, and analyze data. As a general-purpose programming language, Python is flexible and well-suited to handle large datasets. This workshop is designed for social scientists, who are interested in using Python but have no idea where to start. Our goal is to “demystify” Python and to teach social scientists how to manipulate and examine data that deviate from the clean, rectangular survey format. This workshop is intended for social scientists who are new to programming. No experience required.
“Born digital” content refers to files that were originally created in a digital format, as opposed to “digitized” materials that have been converted from original analog and physical items. As the Indiana University Libraries acquire more born-digital collections, new workflows and procedures are required to address the challenges they pose for long-term preservation and access. The Born Digital Preservation Lab (BDPL) provides equipment and workflows to ensure that such content retains its authenticity and integrity for future use by the university community and researchers at large. This presentation will highlight key considerations and principles for preserving born-digital materials and introduce attendees to current procedures in the BDPL.
The Indiana University Digital Preservation Service Planning Project, a collaborative effort involving the IU Bloomington Libraries, the IUPUI University Library, and UITS, and was launched on July 24, 2020 to address two significant needs. First, as a growing number of campus units acquire and create digital collections, there are increased opportunities for variations in practice and the duplication of resources and effort to maintain these materials. Second, while IU has successfully preserved digital collections for decades, current solutions do not always align with emerging professional best practices. The project will respond to these issues by documenting functional and technical requirements appropriate to the IU community as well as exploring funding and governance models that would support a university-wide service. Upon completion of the project in January 2021, the team plans to seek approval to move forward with the implementation of their recommendations. This presentation will provide an overview of the project goals and deliverables as well as updates on current work. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and provide feedback.
The group behind the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) has recently released a beta specification for a new protocol, entitled Open Archives Initiative Object Reuse and Exchange (OAI-ORE). OAI-ORE "defines standards for the description and exchange of aggregations of Web resources," a need commonly faced by digital libraries. This presentation will provide an introduction to the OAI-ORE data model and serializations of OAI-ORE "resource maps" in Atom and RDF. It will also discuss the movement towards data sharing by digital libraries using mechanisms native to the Web rather than in library-centric, high-value and low adoption protocols.
Neatline, a tool for the open-source Omeka framework that allows users to create digital exhibits with maps and timelines, was created to fit the needs of scholars, librarians, historians, and digital humanists. In this talk, the speaker will share an introduction to Neatline, her experiences using the tool for a mapping project with IU's Digital Collections Services, and suggestions for libraries interested in exploring Neatline themselves.
Background and Aims: Medical school curriculum is tasked with producing lifelong self-directed learners, a set of characteristics requiring strong metacognitive skills. Metacognitive skills directly impact students’ metacognition, which is their ability to understand and regulate their own thinking and learning. It may then be postulated that metacognition may be key in distinguishing students that require a post-baccalaureate program from those that do not. Metacognition has two critical domains: metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive regulation, each of which contain multiple subprocesses. Metacognitive knowledge includes knowing strategies for learning, when to use those strategies, and knowing oneself as a learner. Metacognitive regulation includes strategies for planning, monitoring, evaluating, and debugging learning strategies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate: 1) the impact of a graduate Team-Based Learning (TBL) course on students’ metacognitive awareness, and 2) the relationship between metacognition and course performance.
Methods: Students enrolled in a TBL graduate histology course at Indiana University took part in this study. Students completed a 19-item Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) at the beginning (MAI1) and end of the semester (MAI2). The MAI has two domains, Knowledge (8 items) and Regulation (11 items), where items are rated on a 5-point scale from “not at all typical of me” to “very typical of me.” Free response questions asked about knowledge and study abilities, plans for studying in histology and how study skills and abilities have improved across the semester. Finally, students completed a voluntary reflection about their examination performance after the first unit exam. Differences between MAIs were investigated using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Spearman's correlations explored the relationship between MAI and final course grades. MAI free responses and exam reflection were analyzed using thematic analysis. Responses were coded using a conceptual framework of metacognition based on processes of knowledge and regulation.
Results: Thirty-one (94%) students completed both MAIs. There were no differences between MAI1 and MAI2 scores and there was no relationship between MAI1 or MAI2 and final course grades. The Wilcoxon test demonstrated a significant difference between the Knowledge and Regulation domains for MAI1 (p=0.002) and MAI2 (p=0.001) where students reported the items in the Knowledge domain were more typical of them than items in the Regulation domain. There were no differences across the domains between the two time points. Students reported initial hesitation and difficulty with learning histology content in a lecture-free, flipped classroom approach. Students discussed plans for approaching studying, but many reported modifying study strategies throughout the semester. However, few students discussed active learning strategies that would allow them to evaluate and assess their knowledge prior to assessments.
Conclusion: While the MAI failed to demonstrate any improvement in metacognition, students reported an increase in their ability to adapt their study strategies to the content and learning materials. Differences in knowledge of cognition and regulation suggests educators in TBL classrooms may need to provide students with additional resources and strategies to regulate their learning. Future studies aim to investigate the validity of the MAI for measuring metacognition in anatomy courses.
Introduction/ Background: Bootcamps serve to prepare graduating medical (MS4) students with specialty-specific skills for residency. The knowledge and confidence to perform common tasks can ease the transition from student to intern. In the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology, there are recommended ultrasound (US) milestones for Level 1 to Level 4 residents. A goal of a preparatory bootcamp is to provide skills and confidence to perform at Level 1 on Day 1 of residency. Traditionally bootcamps have occurred in person, however the COVID pandemic forced a pivot from in-person US training to online interactive didactic sessions. It is unclear if the online didactics are as effective as in-person simulation in developing confidence in US training for future OBGYNs.
Study Objective: Our objective was to determine if our interactive, online US bootcamp was as effective as in person training in developing confidence in graduating medical students entering into OBGYN residency. Our hypothesis is that in-person training will be more effective in developing confidence in these tasks.
Methods: A two hour lecture provided by Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty was developed based on US Milestones in the Residency Training Program Consensus Report (Abuhamad 2018). The lecture utilized Nearpod, an interactive online software, and was delivered via Zoom. Thirteen MS4 students completed an anonymous survey on their ability to obtain images based on US Milestones following completion of the lecture. Self-reported confidence on a Likert scale (1-10: 1-3 if unable to obtain to images, 4-6 acquisition with assistance and 7-10 able to obtain and interpret) was reported. Mean scores were calculated for MS4 students for each US milestone. MS4 confidence was compared to PGY1 resident confidence 6 months into their intern year. PGY1 residents all underwent in person simulation training and didactic training from the same MFM faculty that provided the bootcamp. PGY1 residents underwent the same survey as MS4 and descriptive analysis and independent t test were performed with SPSS 27.
Results: 13 MS4 students took part in the curriculum and all completed the post course survey. 5 MS4 students had taken an US elective prior to the bootcamp. Confidence was highest for fetal presentation (mean 7.6) and amniotic fluid (5.8). Confidence was moderate for the components of a growth US (biparietal diameter 6.1, abdominal circumference 5.7, femur length 5.7). There was no overall difference in confidence between MS4 students who completed an additional US elective compared to those who did not. Eight PGY1 interns completed the confidence survey. MS4 students who completed the online bootcamp had a slightly higher mean confidence level (5.1) as compared to PGY1 at the 6 month mark of their training (4.5, p 0.049).
Conclusions: An interactive, online didactic US curriculum was associated with increased confidence in MS4 students as compared to PGY1 residents. Our findings provide reassurance that an interactive, online resource can be an efficacious way to provide instruction on traditionally hands-on skills. Future directions will include a blend of interactive, online didactics with US-simulation to improve bootcamp training.

This talk poses a fertile, if playfully anachronistic, historical question: In the final two decades of his seventy-two-year reign, did Louis XIV (r. 1643-1715) subsidize the world’s first “Big Pharma” companies into existence? From the 1680s onward the Sun King granted monopoly rights and government supply contracts, first to the court physician Jean-Baptiste Chomel, and then to the Dutch-born medical entrepreneur Adriaan Engelhard Helvetius (naturalized French as Adrien Helvétius). Both men developed proto-industrial operations that annually shipped tens of thousands of standardized medicine chests all over France and beyond. Building on relationships forged in supplying medicines to the French army, Rivest argues that they took advantage of supply problems in existing Catholic poor relief networks to provide their standardized medicines to the largest possible purchaser—the French absolutist state—and the largest possible consumer base—the peasants of rural France. Although grounded in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this talk raises questions about the connections between charity and capitalism; the role of private entrepreneurs in fulfilling the state objectives; and about how the state shapes markets as a consumer, rather than just as a regulator, that continue to have resonance in the twenty-first century.

Hardly had the exultation of victory and accomplishment cooled, when the nation found itself face to face with an old problem, which it had hoped was a dead issue. The application of California for statehood was not covered by the Missouri Compromise. The Southerners fought to hold their equal advantage in the Senate – they had long ago lost the House. In the end they had to take the “half loaf” which the Compromise of 1850 offered, but they were unhappy and fearful of the future. Yet a few years of prosperity lulled all into a feeling of security and hopes began to build. Then came the question of the route of the transcontinental railroad. Next, the Kansas-Nebraska Act. From 1854 the way led steadily downhill toward sectional conflict, this time with guns, rather than orators, barking. The Republican Party was uncompromisingly a Northern, anti-slavery faction – the last real bond which had hitherto resisted sectional friction was now gone, the national political party. The South was outnumbered in the legislature. Its victory in the judiciary – the Dred Scott decision – only roused its opponents to more determined action. The success of the Lincoln candidacy could mean the coup de grace. The South conditioned itself for that possibility.

While variable-centered approaches to data continue to be widely employed in public health, psychology and many other disciplines, the use of person-centered approaches have become increasingly common. A third type of approaches, which integrates both variable- and person-centered approaches, has been rapidly developed and adopted in research which involves longitudinal data. In this workshop, we will first compare these three approaches. Then, drawing on a longitudinal study which examines the trajectory patterns in maternal depressive symptoms across pre- and postnatal periods, we will go through the steps of conducting general mixture modeling, an analytical procedure combining variable- and person-centered approaches. We will also discuss how this integrated approach can help to address research questions which are difficult to answer otherwise.

We surveyed all articles in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science, and the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General that mentioned the term "Likert," and found that 100% of the articles that analyzed ordinal data did so using a metric model. We demonstrate that analyzing ordinal data as if they were metric can systematically lead to errors. We demonstrate false alarms (i.e., detecting an effect where none exists, Type~I errors) and failures to detect effects (i.e., loss of power, Type~II errors). We demonstrate systematic inversions of effects, for which treating ordinal data as metric indicates the opposite ordering of means than the true ordering of means. We show the same problems --- false alarms, misses, and inversions --- for interactions in factorial designs and for trend analyses in regression. We demonstrate that averaging across multiple ordinal measurements does not solve or even ameliorate these problems. We provide simple graphical explanations of why these mistakes occur. Moreover, we point out that there is no sure-fire way to detect these problems by treating the ordinal values as metric, and instead we advocate use of ordered-probit models (or similar) because they will better describe the data. Finally, although frequentist approaches to some ordered-probit models are available, we use Bayesian methods because of their flexibility in specifying models and their richness and accuracy in providing parameter estimates.

Ever since the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community, the progress of the Six, or "Little Europe" as the Community was called, had evoked mixed emotions. Many nations outside the Six —and even some within —felt skeptical about the project. Though the Initial vigor of the new movement was surprising, the defeat of the European Defense Community by the French Assembly seemed to confirm the sceptics' opinions. Yet the Six were undaunted by the setback, and, less than a year later, were busily planning further economic integration. Their intention to create, within the boundaries of the EuropeanCoal and Steel Community, a common market extending to all fields of commerce was viewed with deep misgivings by some other European nations. These "outside" nations felt that an open market within and a common tariff wall around the area involved might be a serious threat to existing trade patterns. Further, these antagonists felt that the concept posed a severe political threat to the solidarity of Europe and the western world. Using as its platform the existing Organization for European Economic Cooperation with its seventeen-country membership --which included the Six —the antagonists proposed to form a European Free Trade Area whose members would gradually eliminate existing trade barriers among themselves.

The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics & American Institutions was an endowed ethics research center established in 1972 at Indiana University Bloomington. Through its programming, the Poynter Center addressed bioethics, religion, political ethics, research ethics, professional and educational ethics, technology, and many other areas. Initiatives over the years included courses such as "The Citizen and the News," supported by the Ford Foundation, which began in the fall of 1975 and studied the institutions that produce news and information about public affairs in America.

Andrea describes her struggle to be recognized and how she eventually became an activist for campus accessibility at Purdue Calumet University in Hammond. There she founded Hoosier ADAPT, an student group focusing on disability rights. In 2007, Pepler-Murray graduated from the university (renamed Purdue University Northwest) with a degree in Communication and Creative Arts.
