The Center for Biological Research Collections is a consortium of research-based scientific collections at Indiana University that works in close collaboration with the IU Libraries, the Advanced Visualization Laboratory, University Information Technology Services, and a number of other campus wide organizations to promote the preservation, digitization, and discoverability of IU's natural history collections.
The CBRC enhances collection-based research, education, and outreach in biodiversity science, botany, paleontology, zooarchaeology, and related disciplines by providing shared infrastructural and data management support. The Center focuses on collections of biological specimens, including fossils and archaeological remains, that have shared taxonomic, geographic, and temporal metadata requirements. The CBRC provides institution-wide support for a collections management information system, Specifyåü and is working to facilitate the interoperability of this bio-collections data platform with the new Fedora 4 digital content management system being developed by the IU Libraries.
This presentation will provide an overview of the university-wide resources committed to the digitization of biological research collections, prospects for future research, education, and outreach opportunities, as well as a mention of some of the challenges that may arise in the digitization of the several million collections objects for which the CBRC is tasked. This grand challenge of specimen preservation, metadata maintenance, and data discoverability is a service and responsibility of the entire university community to enhance and augment the commitment of nearly 200 years of biological research in many scientific sub-disciplines focused on Indiana and beyond.
The Center for Survey Research at Indiana University (CSR) is a medium-sized academic organization that focuses on academic and policy research. The CSR is a nationally recognized Center that has a strong reputation for technological knowledge, methodological innovation, and data quality. The CSR has been a leader in the use of web technology for survey processes. John will discuss the role of the CSR here at IU, address recent advances in survey methods, and answer questions you may have about both.

Explains that a healthy environment is as essential to the survival of man as to plants and animals, since man must ultimately consume plants and animals. Points out that pesticide controls can be biological rather than chemical, but consumers prefer "pretty" fruit to the blemished skin of safe fruit. Emphasizes that industries prefer chemical to biological control for economic reasons.
This program is concerned with the role of the business manager, the person who brings together the land, the resources, the necessary labor, and the capital or means of production and sets all these turning to manufacture the things that people need or want. To indicate the functions of the business manager, the program visits a laundry – operated as a proprietorship, a filling station – operated as a partnership, and a large corporation. In dealing with the corporation, the program shows the varied responsibilities of Donald Douglas, general manager of the Reflective Products Division of the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company.
A historian and a geographer from the University of Michigan, Professor John W. Hall and Professor George Kish, join Professor Peek and Mr. Ravenholt to discuss the problems of rural Asia. The rural Asiatic situation is summed up simply by saying that in that part of the world there are too many people living on too little land and using primitive methods and equipment. Most of the Asiatic people are living at the subsistence level while many witness starvation yearly. Professor Hall displays pictures he took while in Japan recently to illustrate the primitive buildings that house the Japanese farmer and the outmoded farming methods which these farmers are practicing today. The panel discusses these problems of too little food supply and tremendous population growth. Another problem is the condition of the concentration of land ownership. In the struggle to win this "twilight zone" over to their side, both East and West have social reforms to alleviate this condition. The Soviets offer the idea of collective farming. According to Professor Kish, however, this idea is gradually being replaced by the state ownership plan. The democratic plan, on the other hand, advocates individual ownership of the farm land. In order for this plan to be effective, however, the attitude of the Asiatic farmer must be changed--he must be convinced that he can better himself. Final success, then, depends upon the U.S. exporting skills, techniques and machinery along with financial support to the rural areas of Asia.

Eleven-year-old children have a pretty good idea of how baseball works. Yet, as Ray Jackendoff will show, the concepts involved in baseball are remarkably complex and subtle. So the question is: What cognitive resources do children bring to the task of learning baseball, such that they manage to understand it so readily? Professor Jackendoff will examine seven aspects of the understanding of baseball, in each case looking for its place in the larger ecology of human cognition. These aspects include: cooperation and competition; rules of the game and strategies; balls, strikes, runs, and outs; taking roles (such as pitcher and umpire) within the frame of the game; the logic of groups, including teams; how humans make up new systems such as games; and why humans like games, both as players and spectators.
