In this oral history Mr. Ronald Gaines discussed how he first connected to and purchased Chicago's Finest Marina- the oldest black owned marina in Chicago and at the time of this interview a newly designated site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Mr. Gaines is a retired Chicago police sergeant and many of his family members work for the Chicago Police Department and in public safety. He spoke of the unique vantage that offers them in the community. He described family legacy connected to Freedom Seekers. His ancestor William Washington Gaines sought freedom after fleeing Virginia and began freeing other family members gathering again to make life near Marquette, Michigan.

River Days was a series of monthly social and educational gatherings held along the river at Chicago's Finest Marina. Chicago's Finest Marina is the oldest continuously Black- owned marina in Chicago. Owned by the Gaines family, the marina provides event space and water access for boaters. The Gaines additionally interpret and elevate the stories of the Self Liberators on the Underground Railroad who sheltered on the land now occupied by the Marina as they journeyed to freedom. In the spirit of this legacy, River Days welcomed community members to the river for food, activities, and neighborly conversations about the land, water, and community well-being. Co-designed by Wayfinding and community organizations, these events also included programming such as yoga, story collecting and mapping, planting demos, music, bird walks, kayak demos, bingo, and art installations. Attendees were simultaneously introduced to the marina space, local garden, historic freedom sites, and other neighborhood resources, and invited as stakeholders into conversations about the future of Riverdale's public lands.

Bull, M.D., produced this video to demonstrate several successful dynamic crash-tested options for transporting children with special needs.  The Automotive Safety for Children Program, through funding provided by the James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association (now the Riley Children’s Foundation), the Automotive Safety for Children Program worked with partners at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute, to conduct dynamic crash tests that showed the crashworthiness of several products:  the Swinger car bed (at the time, manufactured by Romer, a German company), Dr. Bull’s modification of the E-Z-On vest to allow children to lie flat and secured on a vehicle seat, and Dr. Bull’s modification of the Century 100 car seat (with reduced sides) that led to the development of the Spelcast car sea for safe transportation of children in hip spica casts.

Stout, OTR, Indiana’s first adapted playground for children with special needs in Indiana and possibly the first of its kind in a hospital in the United States was built and made available for children who were patients at Riley Hospital for Children from 1989 to 2013. The playground was called the David Letterman Playground because the Hoosier comedian, entertainer, and late-night talk show host provided the funding that made this playground possible. This video showcases the adapted playground equipment that was installed for this trailblazing playground for Riley Hospital patients to have the chance to play in an outdoor setting that was located just outside the north entrance to the hospital.

The Indiana University School of Medicine Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Student Interest Group hosted an informational Q&A session with representatives from the Gregory S. Fehribach Center at Eskenazi Health on April 29, 2025 to hear about the history of the center and its mission to advances employment equity for college and university students with physical disabilities by providing them with internships, resources and support. The Gregory S. Fehribach Center at Eskenazi Health began as a partnership between Eskenazi Health and Ball State University to provide internships in fields related to their academic majors to Ball State students with physical disabilities. One Ball State student interned in 2011, and the program was formalized in 2013 with only Ball State students participating until 2016. Since then, the program has grown to include students from 42 colleges and universities and 46 employers.

An interviewed inmate tells that he was less damaged by his prior criminal experience than by his prison experiences. Public sentiment has not kept pace with the progress of penological attitudes, say Lohman and Bates. This is a cause of prison experiences making an inmate more dangerous to the public. They emphasize that a prison must make offenders self-reliant, rather than dependent, and indicate methods by which this can be accomplished.

The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate a new approach to group therapy with senile, psychotic patients. This objective is achieved with the aid of elderly male and female patients, a group therapist and several ancillary personnel. In this presentation a group of patients is shown initially in an institutional setting at their weekly group session. As the therapist strives to bring order into a noisy chaotic session, she uses members of the group to limit each other, and motivate behavioral changes. She suggests that they assist in solving another patient's problem, and calls on one after another for their suggestions. The leader of the group is hostile, but the therapist encourages her to assume a leadership role, express her feelings, and try to cope with the behavior which bothers her. The therapist uses a gesture which physically touches the patient to reassure her. The patients are all encouraged to join the therapist in singing the group's "song". During the course of the session the patients are encouraged to interact with each other and diminish their isolation and fantasizing. The program stresses that all levels of the staff must be trained to understand the goals of the group, and the importance of the therapist in developing a meaningful relationship with the patients. As the program closes, the session ends, and some patients are seen to assist each other, and some slight changes in behavior are noted.

Features many street scenes capturing local culture in the former Soviet Union, Ukraine, Warsaw, and East Berlin. Numerous depictions of Lenin, in commemorative art, can be seen throughout. The film focuses both on large cities and rural landscapes, where women notably join men in performing hard labor in the fields. Bailey documented trips to many landmarks ; in Leningrad, this includes the Winter Palace, Admirality Tower, Senate Square, Alexander Column, and Peterhof Palace ; in Kiev, the National Opera, St. Sophia's Cathedral, and the Verkhovna Rada building ; in Moscow, the Bolshoi Theatre, Cathedral Square, Red Square, St. Basil's Cathedral, the Grand Kremlin Palace, and many examples of Stalinist architecture ; in Warsaw, the Ghetto Heroes Monument and stone reliefs of workers on Marszałkowska street ; in Berlin, the ruins of the Reichstag, St. Hedwig's Cathedral, and a monument to Soviet soldiers in World War II. The specter of the war lingers throughout as many cities still sport heavy damage from bombing - particularly Berlin and Stalingrad.

Lohman outlines probation as a special alternative to the criminal-making influences of the prison system, stating that probation can effectively replace detention; although it is considered in the public mind as a form of leniency and improperly administered it becomes “beating the rap.” Two men with criminal experience are interviewed to illustrate this alternative. Meeker and Lohman delve into the necessary requirements to make probation an instrument for controlling criminal behavior and if its potentialities for reclaiming those who have strayed outside the social role are to be used to the fullest extent.

The examples have been selected to accompany the monograph, A Sound History: Lawrence Gellert, Black Musical Protest, and White Denial, by Steven Garabedian, published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2020. The larger collection of Lawrence Gellert recordings are described in the IUCAT record (https://iucat.iu.edu/catalog/2231335 ). Some of these recordings were made using a primitive recording device and the audio quality is very poor. Titles are taken from those provided in Gellert's notes or have been created based on the song content. Gellert did not document the names of performers for their safety, and that is why the performers for most of these recordings are unknown.
