The New York Woodwind Quintet is featured on this opening program with introductions by Yehudi Menuhin. Interviews objectivist poet Louis Zukofsky as to the form and philosophy underlying his poetry, the circumstances under which his first poem was published, and several unique aspects of his poetry. Points out that while Zukofsky is not widely known, his poems and writings about poetry have had an important influence on his own and later generations. Includes readings of several of his works, such as "The," "Section Nine of 'A'," and "Bottom on Shakespeare."

In his final program, John Dodds poses a startling question: “Are Americans civilized?” Undoubtedly, he says, most Americans will reply without hesitation. “Of course, we are!” Yet, Dr. Dodds points out, we are branded by many foreigners as a raw, materialistic, uncouth, mercenary, and even an uncivilized nation. He inquires into the factors in our society that have induced such severe criticism from abroad. He asks if others are merely jealous of our technological advancement –which most are as quick to adopt as they are to criticize –or have they actually found some basic flaws in the fabric of our culture. In peering into the structure of our civilization, he holds up a mirror in which all Americans might profit from viewing themselves. From this analysis we realize that American have their shortcomings both obvious and subtle, but, as to the state of American civilization, Dr. Dodds leads us to believe the picture is more pleasant than many would have us think.
Dr. Feinberg puts another great writer under the microscope in this discussion of the humor of Jonathan Swift. He presents and analyses samples of Swift’s material.

There was an overwhelming decision in November 1932 to change leadership. Early New Deal legislation sought to accomplish the first two R’s, Relief and Recovery. The later years of the New Deal were pointed toward the third, Reform. An English historian of the modern American scene has offered a sound theme for this part of the story: “One many not agree with the answers which he gave, but one must admit that FDR asked the right questions.”
The USA withdrew and sought to lead its own life. The nation tried to return to “normalcy.” In an unstable world Americans knew amazing prosperity and, while it lasted, lived with carefree abandon. Then came the day of reckoning. The first stages of the Age of the Great Depression were confusing and painful.
September 1939 brought war. American apprehensions increased and neutrality grew less and less tenable. The Japanese military settled the conflict of attitudes in early December, 1941. Americans went to war and this time no one, save possibly the Russians, and with little reason, would dispute awarding them the real victors. But, unfortunately, only two of the totalitarian powers were defeated.
This workshop will give an overview of how to identify what types of data analysis tools to use for a project, along with basic “DIY” instructions. We will discuss the most common analysis tools for describing your data and performing significance tests (ANOVA, Regression, Correlation, Chi-square, etc), and how they should be selected based on the type of data and the type of research question you have. We will spend the first hour outlining ‘what analysis to use when’ and the second hour going through an example dataset in SPSS software “Comparing motivations for shopping at Farmer’s markets, CSA’s, or neither.” Bring your own data set to work along also.

Journalism is innate in Craig Klugman, longtime editor of the Fort Wayne (Indiana) Journal Gazette.
“In my life, about the only thing that came easily to me was newspaper journalism,” he said of his career.
Born in 1945 in Fargo, North Dakota, well before the middle-of-nowhere town had any weight to its name, Klugman graduated from IU in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and political science.
He was hired as a copy editor at the Chicago Sun-Times after graduation, and later went on to serve as telegraph editor, news editor, city editor and assistant managing editor for features.
He left the Sun-Times for Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where he taught as an assistant professor from 1978-79. He went on to serve as director of undergraduate studies from 1979-82.
After leaving Medill in 1982, Klugman returned to the state of his alma mater, where he would dedicate the next decades of his life not only to local communities, but to the benefit of Indiana journalism as a whole. He stepped onto the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette as editor in 1982, where he worked for 33 years before his retirement from the paper in late 2015. Under his leadership, the paper won numerous state and national awards, which include the Hoosier State Press Association’s Blue Ribbon Newspaper of the Year award.
Journal Gazette publisher Julie Inskeep once wrote that Klugman has remained dedicated through his career to embracing the growth of media, and even to following its growth into uncharted territory.
In 1998, Klugman helped produce and distribute a revolutionary seven-newspaper investigative series on abuses of Indiana’s public access laws. The series, called “The State of Secrecy,” ran simultaneously in all seven of the participating papers and ultimately resulted in the creation of the Indiana Public Access Counselor’s Office.
The format has since been used by newspapers in more than 20 states.
Klugman serves on the IU Publications Board, which selects editors for IU student media publications. He chaired the Freedom of Information, International and Content committees for the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and even served a year as the editor of the society’s magazine.
In 2001, he joined other distinguished journalists and public officials for “Getting it Right,” a Franklin College symposium on accuracy in the media. In 2004, he was awarded the Hoosier Intellectual Freedom Award from the Indiana Library Federation for challenging censorship throughout his career.
He also received a Distinguished Service Award from the Hoosier State Press Association, which recognized his work on more than 20 years of service with HSPA committees. Those included the Newsroom Seminar and Freedom of Information committees.
He was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 2009.
Throughout his career, Klugman has remained dedicated not only to contributing to his field, but also to bettering it. His work on freedom of the press and freedom of information advocacy exemplifies his career-long affinity for journalism and his will to advance it for all.
“So what have newspapers meant to me?” he asked. “My life, probably.”
Miriam Meloy Sturgeon’s legacy to IU journalism lasted long after she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the program. She established IU’s first journalism library and, as an associate at the IU Foundation, helped raise more than $1 million for the renovation of Ernie Pyle Hall in the mid-1970s.
Sturgeon, BA’38, MA’40, studied journalism and government as both an undergraduate and a graduate student. As an undergraduate, she worked at the IU Bookstore and was a reporter, copy editor and church editor of the Indiana Daily Student. As a graduate student, she was secretary of the Department of Journalism, and, at director John Stempel’s request, she established the journalism library.
Sturgeon was selected as a member of the college chapter of Theta Sigma Phi, now The Association for Women in Communications. She remained affiliated with the organization for the rest of her life, serving as president of the Bloomington and Indianapolis chapters, and as national president from 1961-63. She also was a member of the National Federation of Press Women and its Indiana affiliate.
In 1974, Sturgeon won the IU Alumni Association’s Gertrude Rich Award, given annually for outstanding contributions to the IUAA.
The IU Foundation named an award in her honor, the Miriam Meloy Sturgeon Award for Partnership. In addition to her work on the library and on Ernie Pyle Hall, Sturgeon helped raise funds for construction projects on the Musical Arts Center.
She also was editor of a publication for the College of Arts and Sciences and Graduate School Alumni Association, and of Hoosier Business Woman, the state publication of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
At a memorial service for Sturgeon in January 1979, Stempel said, “Those of us associated with journalism are forever in her debt for her leadership in raising the money necessary to carry instruction in journalism at Indiana University into the electronic age.”
He added, “She was one of that group who have made Indiana University great.”
Nancy Weaver Teichert, BA’76, spent her career as a beat reporter and investigative journalist at the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger, the Denver Post and, for the last 20 years of her career, the Sacramento Bee. She retired in 2006.
At the Clarion-Ledger, she was part of a reporting team that won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for a campaign supporting the Mississippi governor’s efforts to reform the state’s education system.
Also at the Clarion-Ledger, she won other national journalism awards, including the 1978 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award Grand Prize for Outstanding Coverage of the Problems of the Disadvantaged, and she contributed to the paper’s winning the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting and the Roy W. Howard National Journalism Public Service Award.
While at the Bee, she received the 1993 Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Media Award. She contributed to a series called “A Madness Called Meth,” about methamphetamines, which won the 2001 Nancy Dickerson White award for reporting on drug issues. In 2004, Teichert received the American Society on Aging Media Award for her work on issues related to aging.
At the school’s centennial banquet in 2011, Teichert’s husband surprised her by announcing the establishment of a scholarship at the school in her name. The Nancy Weaver Teichert Scholarship in Journalism, which supports students who specialize in investigative journalism, was first awarded in 2012.
As an IU journalism student, Teichert won numerous awards, including the Women in Communication Scholarship, the Scripps Howard Ernie Pyle Scholarship, the Sally Cooper Scholarship and the Poynter Fund Scholarship.
Teichert said in a school report shortly after the scholarship was announced that she had planned to create a scholarship at the School of Journalism as part of her estate, and was touched and gratified by her husband’s surprise.
“I wouldn’t have made it through college without the scholarships I received,” she said.
Bonnie Brownlee, a long-time educator with an interest in international communication, dedicated 34 years to IU and the former School of Journalism as a teacher, researcher and administrator. She retired in 2015 as chair of The Media School’s journalism department.
Brownlee began her IU career as a journalism student in the late 1960s. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1972 with bachelor’s degrees in English and journalism.
Her first full-time job was with a Boston startup that produced the natural sweetener Miracle Fruit. Brownlee’s work cemented her interest in diet and nutrition. She returned to IU for her master’s degree in journalism, with the idea of becoming a reporter specializing in health.
While earning her master’s degree, she participated in a three-month health project in eastern Nicaragua, where she documented the nutritional status of young Miskito Indian children.
After graduation, Brownlee was working as editor of an in-house publication for Marathon Oil when she was invited to manage a radio station in Nicaragua as part of a U.S. Agency for International Development project. The experience formed the basis of her dissertation for her Ph.D. in mass communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Brownlee was hired as a lecturer in the former School of Journalism at IU in 1981 and advanced through assistant professor, associate professor, associate dean and senior associate dean roles. In 1987, she was the first recipient of the school-wide Gretchen Kemp Teaching Award.
As an associate professor, Brownlee taught courses on news and magazine editing, ethics and international communication. She helped develop travel courses, including Media in Latin America, which she taught. She managed a U.S. State Department–U.S. Embassy Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program that twice brought Iraqi students to Bloomington.
In her time at IU, Brownlee was active in faculty development and governance. She served as chair of the Bloomington Faculty Grievance Committee and was a member of the Faculty Board of Review, the Athletics Committee, the Bloomington Faculty Council and the Overseas Study Advisory Committee.
Brownlee held several positions for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, including head of the international division and member of the teaching and strategic planning committees. She has served on more than a dozen accrediting site teams, a role she maintains, traveling the country to evaluate journalism programs applying for accreditation through the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She also was a member of site teams in the United Arab Emirates in 2003 and 2005.
During the transition from the School of Journalism to The Media School, Brownlee led the school’s reaccreditation effort for the journalism program, which was approved unanimously by ACEJMC. The program has been accredited since 1948, the first year accreditation was granted. Brownlee’s efforts ensured it will maintain its accreditation through 2020.
Gene Miller, BA’50, DHL’77, was a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. After graduation, Miller worked at the Ft. Wayne Journal-Gazette, Wall Street Journal and the Richmond (Va.) News Leader before arriving at the Miami Herald. As an investigative reporter there, he won two Pulitzer Prizes for reporting that helped four innocent people wrongly convicted in Florida for murder.
Over a 48-year career, Miller covered a wide array of local, national and international stories. He was the first print journalist to enter Jonestown in Guyana to cover the Jim Jones-led mass suicide. His other stories included the assassination of President John Kennedy, the Elian Gonzalez custody dispute and a who’s who of newsmakers from throughout the final decades of the 20th century. He died in 2005.
The Faculty Scholarship Celebration features IU East faculty who have been engaged in research, teaching and learning scholarship, or creative activity over the past year. Many are presenting because they received sabbaticals, Summer Faculty Fellowships, a Faculty Research Support Fund grant or other forms of support. However, participation in the Celebration is open to all faculty, and many of the presenters recently completed a project or are currently working on a project that they wish to present. The main purpose of the Celebration is to highlight the great research, scholarship, and creative activity that faculty are engaged in and to bring us all together as a Community of Scholars.

The French horn, capable of producing melody, and the piano, a percussion instrument able to produce symphonic effects, are instruments which contrast with each other and blend exquisitely. To illustrate this musical partnership the program features John Barrows, French horn, and Vera Brodsky, piano. Cities are growing, and people have to move about in them. How they do this can have a considerable effect on the development of the city itself. Many –perhaps most –of the inhabitants of a city own cars, and the temptation to use them is easy to understand. But often a private car is not the best way to get from here to there in a city; public transportation –buses, subways, streetcars, even helicopters for longer distance –is often the best way to move people. Yet too often even so simple a matter as intra-urban transportation resembles a jigsaw puzzle. Groups have grown up to handle different parts of the problem, with the results that these units may overlap, or do not cover the whole problem. The older geographical areas which they were established to serve are new sections within a larger unit, but the original group still exist while the transportation problems become more and more complicated, and increasingly in need of overall planning. Once again the program concludes with a plea to the citizen to learn more about the problems of urban transportation, and to help his community to resolve some of them.
Cities are growing at an explosive rate; more and more people come to cities to liv, to work, to raise their families where there are the greatest number of opportunities for jobs, education, and recreation. But these thousands of new inhabitants do not only increasethe population of the city; they also magnify the problems that any group of people face when they live together in large numbers. Where to live? How to move about? How to govern themselves and guide the development of the community in which they live? The first program of METROPLEX sets the stage for the others, explaining why people are attracted to the city, and what difficulties they and the community face when they move there. Photographs, film clips, diagrams, and sketches are used to good effect to make the picture clear.
Friction in the Old World led to war. The USA tried to maintain neutrality, but with each passing month the problems created became more and more thorny. Finally, the nation was drawn into the conflict. With amazing speed and efficiency the country mobilized. Its participation in World War I was the deciding factor in bringing victory to the Allies.

Gerould Kern, BA’71, is senior vice president and editor of the Chicago Tribune.
Since becoming editor in 2008, Kern has focused the Tribune and its website on local investigative reporting to expose political corruption, government mismanagement and consumer safety issues. This emphasis on “watchdog” reporting has helped drive political reform in Illinois, and has changed the way consumer health and safety are regulated.
In June 2011, Kern directed the expansion and redesign of the Chicago Tribune, adding 44 full pages of news to the paper each week. This expansion is unique among American newspapers. The news content of the printed edition of the Chicago Tribune is now greater than it was five years ago.
Under Kern’s editorship, the Chicago Tribune has won numerous national and state awards, including the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. During Kern’s tenure, the Tribune has been a Pulitzer finalist eight times, including the past two years in investigative reporting.
Kern joined the Tribune in 1991 after serving as managing editor and then executive editor of the Daily Herald, the Chicago region’s largest suburban newspaper and one of the fastest growing dailies in the United States at that time.
At the Tribune, he served in several roles, including associate managing editor for metro, deputy managing editor for features and associate editor. Under his direction as features editor, the Tribune won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1999.
In 2001, he became associate editor of the Tribune and later that year moved to Tribune Publishing following Tribune Co.’s acquisition of Times-Mirror Co. He was named vice president/editorial for Tribune Publishing in 2003.
In April, Kern was named Illinois Journalist of the Year by faculty at Northern Illinois University. Kern was lauded for his dedication to investigative reporting, his support of content sharing across Tribune newsrooms, and his pursuit of new initiatives that reflect innovation amid a challenging climate for the newspaper industry.
Because We Are follows the story of the African American Dance Company during their 50th season at their annual Kukusanya intensive workshop, a time of gathering together in community as the term kukusanya evokes. It also invites viewers into the world of the Dance Company, its members, and their practice of ubuntu, the essence of the Africanist
principle that “I am, because we are.”
Since I am because we are, this work cannot be completed without you. I ask that you allow yourself to be immersed: enjoy the film with all your being. I welcome you to learn how to view the art on screen from the perspective of the performers, and to learn alongside them. The title, Kukusanya, is a self-synergy philosophy and kinesthetic art; in Swahili, it means both “assembling and assembler.” This film is a conversation with Ashley Hayes, a Ph.D. student at Indiana University Bloomington, dance performer, and cultural consultant making a film on the African American Dance Company (AADC) at their 50th anniversary at Indiana University Bloomington in 2024.
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Melissa Farlow has contributed to National Geographic publications for almost 20 years, traveling around the globe to capture images from Africa to Alaska to the Austrian Alps.
Farlow, who was photo editor of the Indiana Daily Student and editor-in-chief of the Arbutus, began her career in 1974 at The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times. Two years later, she won a Pulitzer Prize for a team project that documented the desegregation of Louisville schools. She also was a staff photographer at The Pittsburgh Press, where her portfolio won national honors, before she became a freelance photojournalist.
Farlow’s work has appeared frequently in National Geographic magazine, Smithsonian, GEO and in dozens of books. She has traveled on assignment to Africa, Latin America and around much of the United States. Her magazine work documents subjects such as mountaintop removal mining in West Virginia and the plight of wild mustangs in the American West. Among her books are Long Road South, about the Pan American highway, and Wildlands of the West, both published by National Geographic.
Farlow and her husband, National Geographic photographer Randy Olson, also produce images for national corporate and nonprofit clients including Audi, Toyota, the Ford Foundation, the Heinz Endowments and Habitat for Humanity.
Farlow has a master’s degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Mo. She taught photojournalism at the school and has served on faculty of The Missouri Photo Workshop for almost 20 years. She also has taught at the Center for Photographic Studies in Louisville and the Anderson Ranch of Fine Arts in Aspen, Colo.
Farlow has won numerous awards for her work, including a National Headliner Award and several honors in Missouri’s Pictures of the Year International competition, sponsored by the Missouri School of Journalism’s Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute.

Job-seeking for folklorists can be daunting. In this forum, chaired and moderated by a member of the AFS Graduate Student Section, a group of representatives from the Archives and Libraries, Folklore and Museums, Independent Folklorists’, and Public Programs sections will discuss jobs in their respective fields and answer career-related questions from attendees. The discussion will not have a formalized agenda but will instead take its direction from audience inquiries. Moreover, the forum format allows for two-way conversation; veteran folklorists will themselves have the opportunity to hear directly from job-seekers about the challenges presented by the 21st-century job market and come away with new ideas to improve hiring processes.
Why special treatment for the American farmer? This is the questioned posed in this opening program and, using a story line built around the average family of Ed Harvey, the film seeks a more intelligent handling of agricultural policy on the national level. The program presents a definitive history of agriculture economics in an effort to explain the farmer’s vulnerable position in the constantly changing business cycle of a capitalistic society. Although the program does not advocate any definite policy, it does ask intelligent questions which tend to stimulate thinking on the farm problem.
“Trade is a two-way street. If you want to sell, you’ve got to buy,” says Ed Harvey in this program, after a discussion of international trade and the relation of surplus to tariff. A trip through Washington, D.C., and cartoon sequences of the surplus problem and the import-export balance are featured in the program.
