Summary:
Herman B Wells was named acting president of Indiana University in 1937 and then president the following year. He served as president until June 30, 1962. After his retirement from the role of president, IU created the position of University Chancellor, a position which Dr. Wells held until his death in 2000.

Encounters include: Counte Cullen and Claire Goll (Paris), Claude McKay, Alain Locke, and George Grosz (Paris, Berlin, Moscow), McKay, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and Leon Trotsky (Soviet Union), Horace Cayton and Nancy Cunard (Paris and Hamburg),Alain Locke and the "Black Watch on the Rhine" (French-occupied Rhineland), Langston Hughes, James Yates, and the Spanish Civil War,and W.E.B. Du Bois in Nazi Germany. Common human misunderstandings create a comedy of intellectuals against the climate of political violence in interwar Europe.
This workshop will include an introduction to proposal writing and best practices, as well as a discussion of funding opportunities for social science and social science methodology.
This session will introduce aspiring and current graduate students to the process of grant-writing, as well as to funding opportunities aimed at graduate students in various phases of their professional development. This workshop was offered in partnership with the Schuessler Institute for Social Research and the Department of Sociology, as part of a larger, two-day workshop. "Think Before You Act: Alcohol Misuse," made by Wesley Kopis, was selected as a runner up winning video in "Safety Together: An Archival Remix Contest" organized by Indiana University Libraries.
In Spring 2024, IU Libraries launched its second ever archival remix contest, "Safer Together," a donor-funded contest from IU Libraries Moving Image Archive. In response to the alarming number of IUB students who reported binge drinking and consuming hard alcohol, participants were invited to create a short, compelling video using archival footage to raise awareness about alcohol misuse.
All videos were judged by a Review Board in categories of originality, quality, appropriateness, and effectiveness of raising awareness around alcohol misuse.
As a runner-up, Wesley received a prize of $500!

Bruce Western is Professor of Sociology and co-director of the Justice Lab at Columbia University. He received his BA from the University of Queensland, Australia, and his PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Western's research examines trends in American economic inequality and the growth of the US penal population. These topics are joined by an interest in the shifting landscape of American poverty over the last 40 years. He is the author of Punishment and Inequality in America (2007) and served as Vice-Chair of a consensus panel of the National Academy of Sciences on the causes and consequences of high rates of incarceration in the United States. His new book is called Homeward: Life in the Year After Prison (2018). Western is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Radcliffe Fellow, and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Science and the National Academies of Science.
To gain information for the spring remediation project, United States Geological Survey (USGS) fieldworker Harvie Pollard conducted fieldwork at the spring site. The video shows camera logging and measuring the spring’s flow in gallons per minute.
