Marcel Duchamp's only film is an example of "graphic cinema." It wittingly demonstrates the intertwining of the visual and verbal responses to viewing a film. The title itself- "anemic" is an anagram of "cinema." Disks of spirals which create optical illusions alternate with disks containing elaborately obscene puns. Duchamp condenses the whole range of sexual elements involving emergence and penetration of a plane surface into a model association between the illusions of gyrating cones and the allusions to breasts, genitals and defecation. --WorldCat

Summary:
Isobel Ludant, a model working in a high-end clothing shop, becomes embroiled in a quarrel, resulting in a ruined gown. To pay for the dress, she turns to her father, an artist, who gets entangled with art thieves while trying to secure the money and is subsequently arrested. Meanwhile, Isobel is dismissed from her job and later becomes the secretary to art dealer Francis Doran, who is unaware of her father's troubles. As her father is released from prison and his reputation is tarnished, Doran supports Isobel, and their relationship evolves, especially as his artistic success begins to rise.
