Soprano Virginia MacWatters was known not only for her impressive operatic career during which she performed in opera houses throughout the United States, Europe, and South America, but also for her dedication to teaching. In 1957 she joined the voice faculty of the Indiana University School of Music where she remained until her retirement in 1982.

IU Archives of African American Music and Culture Director Tyron Cooper has an insider’s view of Black music and the culture behind it, much of which goes back to the Black church.
He says that’s part of what makes AAAMC different: it looks at the broad context and origins of Black music, and makes it accessible for both scholarship and casual listening.
Cooper joins Dean Shanahan on Through the Gates to tell us more about the archives and share AAAMC Speaks, a documentary series hosted by the archives in partnership with the Office of the Provost.

The recent Supreme Court decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson resulted in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right of a pregnant person to choose to have an abortion until fetal viability (i.e., until about 24 weeks). Although this ruling marks a significant shift in abortion policy and climate in the U.S., the vast majority of polls measuring abortion attitudes show that there has been little change in attitudes since the 1970s. What does that mean about the relationship between policy and public opinion and how we measure abortion attitudes? In this workshop, we will provide an overview of abortion as a contentious social issue, historical trends of abortion attitudes, and the implications of the Dobbs v. Jackson decision. Next, we will share an overview of our project: Developing and Assessing Measures for Social Surveys (DAMSS). Then we will present some of our preliminary findings and discuss what makes a “good” question actually a “bad” question? We will conclude with what these preliminary findings mean for how we assess abortion attitudes and what the DAMSS project will be doing next. No previous experience with abortion attitudes is needed. Although the focus of this presentation will be abortion attitudes, the findings and methodology have relevance for other social issues.

Promotional overview of Trade-offs, a series in economic education for nine to thirteen year-olds that consists of fifteen 20-minute television/film programs and related materials. Using dramatizations and special visuals, the series considers fundamental economic problems relevant to everyday life. In its first year, Trade-offs was used by approximately 500,000 students and their teachers in about 25.000 fifth and sixth grade classrooms. This more than quadrupled the amount of teaching of economics as a subject. Trade-offs was produced under the direction of AIT by the Educational Film Center (North Spring-field. Virginia), The Ontario Educational Communications Authority, and public television station KERA, Dallas. Programs were available on film, videocassette, and broadcast videotape. Trade-offs was developed cooperatively by the Joint Council on Economic Education, the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, the Agency for Instructional Television, and a consortium fifty-three state and provincial education and broadcasting agencies.

The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics & American Institutions was an endowed ethics research center established in 1972 at Indiana University Bloomington. Through its programming, the Poynter Center addressed bioethics, religion, political ethics, research ethics, professional and educational ethics, technology, and many other areas. Initiatives over the years included courses such as "The Citizen and the News," supported by the Ford Foundation, which began in the fall of 1975 and studied the institutions that produce news and information about public affairs in America.

This multi-faceted event featured live interviews facilitated by Alex Chambers, host of WFIU’s Inner States podcast, about moments that embody a resistance to the status quo. Attendees had the option to participate in experimental camera-less filmmaking, creating art inspired by the action and agency in the stories told from Amy Oelsner, Stephanie Littell, and Ileana Haberman. At the end of the evening, the strips of film were spliced together and projected in the gallery.

Demonstrates that admen have long been fluent with the familiar slogan, jingle, testimonial, and doctor's endorsement--by which values and dreams, rather than commodities, are made the fare of public consumption. Reminds us that we must guard against the temptation to make advertising the scapegoat for our own materialism, for admen can erect and support only the images that society tacitly permits.
This week, we’ll hear from Michael Adams, Provost Professor of English at Indiana University, and author of “In Praise of Profanity” (Oxford University Press, 2016).
Adams sees “In Praise of Profanity” as a continuation of 2009’s “Slang: The People’s Poetry.” In it, he argues that profanity is not only oversimplified as being taboo, it is also valuable and essential as a vehicle of communication and an element of style.
Adams is an English language historian and a frequent contributor to various dictionaries and academic journals. Though his published articles often explore arcane aspects of language, he also writes books aimed at broader audiences. They include “Slayer Slang: A ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Lexicon” and “From Elvish to Klingon: Exploring Invented Languages.”

As a Senior Faculty Fellow with IDAH, Prof. Justin Bailey of the Eskenazi School is continuing his investigation of materials, cutting, and assembly methods in producing hosohedra-based forms used to create functional design objects. Fundamental to Bailey’s study of form is the ability to digitally sculpt and manipulate forms to incorporate subtle shifts and irregularities, releasing the form of functional objects from rigid geometries often used. To accomplish this for ranges of series and small batch productions, Bailey employs drafting algorithms based on geometries used to create 3D form, flatten into 2d machinable linework, and build on connection methods explored for a range of materials. This particular series of iterations looks at integrations of perforation, transparency, and pliability in wood veneer, steel, and aluminum with PLA 3d printed fasteners.

Introduction/Background: Health care professionals and health professions students are at the forefront of patient care and therefore witness patients’ unmet clinical needs on a daily basis. However, health professionals and students often lack the tools, training, or opportunity to solve these problems. Medical education rightfully prepares medical students to be skillful clinicians, but lacks curriculum to foster entrepreneurial and innovative skill sets that are increasingly important in the evolving medical landscape.
Study Objective: The Advancing Innovation In Medicine (AIM) student group was founded with the goal of providing an outlet for students with an interest in medical innovation to gain hands-on experience for future careers as physician-innovators.
Methods: AIM uses a two-fold approach to engage its members, including yearly longitudinal innovation projects and instructional workshops. Longitudinal innovation projects are intended to develop skill sets in 1) problem identification 2) brainstorming/ideation 3) idea validation and 4) prototyping. Instructional workshops are planned to provide students with complementary, practical knowledge to support future ventures in topics such as circuit analysis, 3D printing, intellectual property, customer discovery, and career development.
Results: Innovation projects allow for interactive collaboration on real-world health care problems identified through AIM members and physician partners at IUSM. In the 2019-2020 academic year, AIM members ideated, prototyped, and presented a neonatal resuscitation device to address inefficiency and design flaws in currently available technology. Example past instructional sessions include 3D printing and circuit analysis workshops to build skills directly applicable to longitudinal projects. Additional workshops in topics such as an entrepreneurial careers in medicine panel and a how-to-brainstorm seminar were conducted to prepare members for their future careers. Conclusions: By engaging students in this innovation-centered curriculum, AIM’s goal is to empower its members to address health care problems at early stages in their careers and use their passion and curiosity to impact the future of health care. In the future, AIM hopes to form partnerships with academic and healthcare institutions across Indiana to create multi-disciplinary student design teams to tackle health care problems and foster innovative thinking within medical education.

A note from College Audition Preparation: Adventures in Brass is a project by the College Audition Preparation (CAP) of the Jacobs School of Music. The project was prompted by a lack of brass repertoire appropriate for collegiate auditions. CAP brass faculty thus commissioned renowned composer Anthony Plog to write a set of six new works for trumpet, trombone, horn, tuba, euphonium, and bass trombone. Dee Stewart and CAP assembled a roster of world-class performers and pedagogues to premiere these six compositions. In addition to recordings of the premieres, Adventures in Brass contains interviews with these faculty in which they provide technical, artistic, and practical guidance to young brass players preparing to apply to college. These videos were captured by and are shared with the help of Tony Tadey and the MITS Video production team of the Jacobs School of Music. We hope that the videos can be an inspirational and motivational force in your own adventures in brass.

Advocates and Allies focuses their work on educating themselves, and other men, about gender equity through workshops dedicated to removing unconscious bias and promoting awareness of gender discrimination.
James' background in psychology gives him unique insight into these biases, and he discusses how, even beyond gender discrimination, we all carry these biases with us and how we can work to be better.
