It is an interesting time in the libraries for metadata. We have a lot of things described and described well, but is it feasible to keep all of that description in a useful way moving forward? And how do we offer up a ton of items all at once for online access?
Whether it's cataloging records or other descriptive metadata, we seem to now be in transition in the libraries. New systems require that we move metadata into new formats. New massive digital collections require description at a scale previously not encountered. We know the metadata we're going to have after these moves and massive description efforts take place will not be complete or perfect and will probably not be the exact metadata we had before. We have to strategize about what information is going to be the most important for search and discovery and aim to have that information available as accurately as possible, regardless of the transition or the scale.
Join us for a look at the systems and approaches we are taking to manage these messy metadata scenarios. We'll discuss the Libraries' move from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4 and the metadata transition happening there, the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative's influx of items requiring mass description and the ramifications and methods being employed, and the future of cataloging records as all libraries look to transition to systems using BIBFRAME. The strategies we employ this time around will inform future metadata moves and mass description efforts.

The architects of the European Coal and Steel Community considered ECSC, not an end in itself, but the first step toward eventual European unity to be realized through the establishment of a common market for all goods. This program traces the successive steps that resulted in the establishment, in 1957, of the Common Market and Euratom. The major economic aims of the Common Market (the abolition of internal trade restrictions, and the establishment of an external common tariff among the six participating nations) are illustrated through the use of animated graphics.
Topic of discussion on this program is the actual organization of the major parties. Our lecturer considers the national characteristics of parties as opposed to the idea that each of them is a conglomeration of local political machines. He concludes with a look at the role the private citizen can and does play in party organization.
The desert plains of central Idaho bore silent witness to many events in history – the coming of the Oregon Trail, the wars between the whites and the Indians, the events of the Old West, Today they are witnessing a change that is far more important – the coming of atomic power. On the lava plains of central Idaho is the National Reactor Testing Station, famous for “firsts” in nuclear energy. Here electricity was first generated from atomic energy and atomic power first was used to light a town. Principles of nuclear submarine propulsion were worked out in “a ship on the desert” in Idaho. “Challenge” visits the National Reactor Testing Station to look at a power plant of the future, a reactor that makes more nuclear fuel than it consumes. The principle is not perpetual motion. This reactor takes the part of uranium that is not fissionable fuel (more than 99 per cent of the total) and converts it into plutonium, a man made element that is a good nuclear fuel. Because the reactor “breeds” plutonium it is called a “breeder” reactor – Experimental Breeder Reactor-II. How this breeding is accomplished, and how fuel for EBR-II is fabricated by remote control, is explained in this program.
When Britain applied for membership in the Common Market, the move represented a dramatic change in Britain's traditional concept of world politics. This program explores the implications of this reversal, some of the problems attendant on British membership, and the reactions of some British leaders to the move. All six of the Common Market nations publicly welcomed the British application for membership. Negotiations began in 1961, with teams of experts seeking solutions to the problems the application raised. The major problem arose from Britain's imperial past. As the Empire evolved into the present Commonwealth, close and mutually beneficial trading patterns were established between Britain and the Commonwealth nations. The Imperial (or Commonwealth) Preference system permits member countries to sell their goods to Britain at either very low duties or without duties at all. Should Britain simply join the Common Market under present circumstances, she would have to apply the Common Market's external tariff to Commonwealth imports --a situation that would be displeasing to all parts of the Commonwealth. Another area of British concern is that of the economic future of Britain's EFTA partners. And from the British point of view, the political implications of Common Market membership raise another question. The member nations' sovereign power to make decisions, in certain instances, will be transferred to a supranational body. This loss of sovereignty, to some Britishers, presents a grave stumbling block.

A few years ago history was made at the United States Atomic Energy Commission’s Argonne National Laboratory where this program was filmed. This is the story of the dedicated research scientists whose search for truth ended a fallacy in chemistry which had existed for more than half a century. Although their efforts were not as exciting as the discovery that the world was round and not flat, the scientists at Argonne disproved that a group of elements called “inert gases” would not react with other elements to form compounds. This is not to imply that these elements – helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon – did not have utility. Helium is the gas used to send balloons aloft. Neon, argon, and krypton are used in light bulbs: xenon in high speed photographic cells; and radon in medical therapy to irradiate cancer cells. What the Argonne scientists investigated was the atomic structure of these elements. For years it had been falsely believed that the electrons within these elements could not combine with electrons within the atoms of other elements. Following a report of Canadian scientists, the researchers at Argonne found that, instead of picking up electrons from other atoms, some of these so-called “inert gases” actually gave up electrons when combined with other elements. Using Krypton, xenon, and radon, in separate experiments, the Argonne scientists succeeded in making compounds which previously were unheard of. In fact, they also found at least one xenon compound for which they weren’t looking. This was xenon trioxide, a powerful explosive, made from xenon and oxygen. Many new uses will doubtless be found for these new compounds, according to the scientists. One might be the use of xenon tetrafluoride to store large quantities of fluorine as an oxidizing agent in rocket fuel.

The manufacture of protective enclosures is part of routine work in many libraries and museums. This presentation summarizes a novel collaboration of 3-D scanning and modeling technology provided by digital technology available on campus with automated box making services internal to Library Preservation. A custom-fitted enclosure for a painting on wood panel within the Lilly Library collections was the net result. This developmental method holds promise for specialized storage and shipping protection of library, scientific research and museum collections.
In this presentation, Professor Silvia Bigatti describes her approach to community-based research. This approach allows her to learn from the Latinx community about its culture, strengths, assets, and how these can all be used to foster wellbeing. She also share data from her studies, and describes interventions with the Latinx community that were based on this approach.
In this program, Criminologist Joseph D. Lohman charts the growth and increasing complexity of the crime problem which has accompanied the development of an urban, industrial culture in the U.S. He shows a corresponding inadequacy in the control and treatment of crime and criminals. An interviewed inmate points out these inadequacies and the need for individual treatment, which is pointed out by Harrison and Lohman, also. Harrison notes that differences in crimes and criminals indicate needs for individual treatment.

The prostate is the source of physical suffering and anxiety – anxiety about cancer and death, of course, but also erections and urination. It is intimately intertwined with what it means to be a man. Drawing on historical and modern sources, interviews with doctors and patients, medical texts, and cultural images of the prostate, Dr. Johnson's talk examines the history of prostate treatments, how it is treated today, what patients are met by when they seek care, and what medical technologies (including the PSA test) do to men worried about their prostate health. Her research stems from an interdisciplinary, medical humanities project conducted at Linköping University, Sweden.

The last meeting of the Herald Tribune Youth Forum was a meeting of the complete group at the U.N. General Assembly hall. Episode nine deals more or less with world problems. The role of the U. N. in world affairs is considered, particularly the problem of colonialism and the U. N.s ability to regulate trusteeships and mandates. The problem of "power politics", and the necessity to align with one side or the other, is presented by Vangala Ram, the delegate from India: "The only real moment of strangeness I recall was during a conversation about world politics. The participants seemed to think that the only powers worth considering in today's world are the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R." Peter Hudson of the United Kingdom later countered this, saying: "Today neutral countries are not the strong countries. They use neutrality to justify their weakness, either because they don't want to be strong or because they are too small to be strong."

When a puppet with magic powers offers Bob a day without numbers, he gladly leaves the classroom with the puppet. A series of frustrating experiences caused by the magical disappearance of numbers, such as the disruption of an exciting baseball game, results in Bob's gladly returning to the classroom and the study of arithmetic.
In this episode, Dr. Smith, Jr., explains the relationship between language and culture. He points out that there is no such thing as a “primitive” language; all languages have the same amount of history behind them. He reveals why all languages are about equally complex, and discusses language patterns and how they affect the learning of a language.
An extemporaneous classroom demonstration of the cooperative planning of an assignment for the unit, '"The Historical Development of Certain Basic Institutions of Freedom in America." Mr. Roland Crary is the demonstration teacher of pupils selected from an eleventh-grade class in American History of the University High School of Iowa City, Iowa. The film was constructed for the purpose of enriching the usual procedures, not of superseding them, in an effort to conserve the time of teachers in assembling materials.
It has been a busy year thus far in the Digital Library Program, and we'd like to take the first Brown Bag of Fall 2011 to tell you a bit about what we have been working on. We will give a brief overview of several new and upcoming projects and services, including the Photos Service, exciting new projects and functionality in Archives Online at IU, and the DLP's first cross-collection search (will be presented in more detail later in the Semester).

Lecture delivered by Chris Flook (Public Historian; Senior Lecturer of Media, Ball State University) on September 22, 2023. In fall of 1902, Indianapolis police detectives uncovered a massive graverobbing ring. That summer, ghoulish body snatchers had plundered Marion County cemeteries for fresh corpses and sold them to medical colleges as cadavers. This presentation, based on Flook’s book, "Indianapolis Graverobbing: A Syndicate of Death," explores this history, the state’s anatomy laws at the time, and the trials of those involved.

Even as JATS XML has become the standard format for academic publishing, the challenges involved in implementing a JATS XML-based publishing workflow have prevented many library publishers from moving beyond PDF-based publishing. The complicated apparatus of even the most basic scholarly articles complicates XML production considerably. In addition, most existing workflows are reliant on XML conversion tools or paid vendors to convert author submission documents into JATS XML. In either case, these XML documents are time-consuming to produce and often require additional editing and correction before publication. Book reviews, on the other hand, provide a less burdensome format for library publishers who wish to transition to XML publishing. With minimal training, editorial teams can format JATS XML book reviews in-house without resorting to paid vendors or conversion tools. This presentation outlines the successful onboarding of a JATS-only book review journal to the Open Journal Systems platform. To facilitate this, we created a simplified JATS XML template using the DAR tag subset specification to optimize machine readability, avoid redundancy, and ensure reusability. The onboarding process also required customization of the OJS interface and the creation of detailed documentation and training materials for the editorial team. Although the editorial team had no prior experience with OJS or JATS XML, they are now publishing full-text, machine-readable books reviews. As the result of our work, these book reviews will now be more easily indexed and permanently stored as markup in a digital preservation archive. The semantically tagged content will facilitate keyword searches and increase discoverability over the long term. Finally, as a machine-readable format, JATS XML is inherently accessible and includes elements that allow for accessibility tagging and for the creation of interfaces that are both Section 508 and WCAG compliant.
Episode 9 of Your Choice Our Chance, a series of drug abuse prevention programs to be viewed by students and community members in an effort to educate and prevent the use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs before preteens start. The program targets children in the vulnerable pre-adolescent years, incorporating proven prevention strategies recommended by leading health educators. The school component focuses on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that influence drug use. The programs are designed to help students develop personal and social skills, learn to make decisions, and improve their self - concept. Dramatic episodes feature target-age students in realistic school, family, and peer group situations. The programs feature a variety of socioeconomic levels, family structures, and racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Fixed and random effects models for longitudinal data are common in the social sciences. Their primary advantage is that they control for time-invariant omitted variables. However, analysts face several issues when using these models. One is the uncertainty of whether to apply fixed effects (FEM) versus random effects (REM) models. This paper presents a general panel model that includes the standard FEM and REM as special cases. It also presents a sequence of nested models that provide a richer range of models that researchers can easily compare with likelihood ratio tests and fit statistics. Furthermore, researchers can implement our general panel model and its special cases in widely available structural equation models software. An extended empirical example on the cost of motherhood illustrates our results.
Holocaust Memorialization in the Baltic States is fraught with competing memory narratives stemming from the spatial and chronological proximity of Soviet violence and the Holocaust. This project seeks to use GIS mapping technology and archival resources to create a digital public history tool that visually situates the violence of both Occupations in a spatial context. Focusing on one site in Alytus, Lithuania, this project seeks to visualize the geographic closeness of these experiences of violence. To achieve this, this project usesa small-scale map marking sites of violence and memorialization of violence. The points on the map are accompanied by small articles to deliver both a visual and historical survey of Soviet and Nazi violence in Alytus.
In the Dardasht district of Isfahan (Iran) stands a dodecagonal, domed building known as “Madras-i Ibn Sīnā” (Academy of Avicenna). Today, the building is firmly believed to be the space where Ibn Sīnā (980-1037 CE), the renowned physician-philosopher and polymath, taught his students during his residence in Isfahan (1024-1037 CE)—a claim originally made by the early 20th-century local historians of the city. The folk and anecdotal nature of almost all the information about this historical monument made me question its relationship to Ibn Sīnā’s life and career, and to the city in his time. My poster shows how I used digital mapping to assess this claim through geospatial data visualization of two historical datasets that I extracted from a wide range of primary and secondary literature on urban history of Isfahan, and on Ibn Sīnā’s biobibliography. Geolocating the textual evidence along with georeferencing historical maps of Isfahan allowed me to analyze the spatial relationship of the Madras to Ibn Sīnā’s whereabouts and activities in a reconstructed geospatial model of the city in his time. My spatial analysis shows that the location and speculated function of the building is not consistent with the geolocated historical data.

Eduard Pernkopf’s Atlas of Topographical and Applied Human Anatomy is a four-volume anatomical atlas published between 1937 and 1963, and it is generally believed to be the most comprehensive, detailed, and accurate anatomy textbook ever created. However, a 1997 investigation into “Pernkopf’s Atlas,” raised troubling questions regarding the author’s connection to the Nazi regime and the still unresolved issue of whether its illustrations relied on Jewish or other political prisoners, including those executed in Nazi concentration camps. Following this investigation, the book was removed from both anatomy classrooms and library bookshelves. A debate has ensued over the book’s continued use, and justification for its use has focused on two issues: (1) there is no definitive proof the book includes illustrations of concentration camp prisoners or Jewish individuals in particular, and (2) there is no contemporary equivalent to this text. However, both points fail to address the central importance of the book, not simply as part of anatomy instruction, but also as a comprehensive historical narrative with important ethical implications.

Having encountered a first edition copy at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library, these authors were given a unique opportunity to engage with the text through the respective humanities lenses of history, ethics, and narrative. In this talk, Beckman and Hartsock recount the difficult and somewhat opaque provenance of this book, engage the ethical questions surrounding both its creation and its use, and ultimately propose a pedagogical methodology for its continued use in medical education.
