The Chemical Genomics Core Facility (CGCF) is adding phage display capability to assist research projects requiring peptide domain screening. They will employ both the traditional DNA M13 phage as well as the RNA Qβ phage for screening. An advantage of the Qβ phage is the ease with which genetic modifications can be made. Qβ phages will be used to display library of peptides (8 to 50-mer) and to screen over 1 million targets. They will be able to assist scientists with the design, experimentation, preliminary result analyses, sequencing data, amplification, reconstitution, and storage of the obtained hybrid phages of interest. In this seminar, Dr. Alain Bopda Waffo discusses the practical methodology and application of phage display as well as newly developed biopanning techniques.

Wallace Lester (Nashville, Tennessee)
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, and raised all over America, Wallace Lester has been playing drums from an early age. Wallace spent the 1990s touring nationally with the Boulder, Colorado-based funk-jam band Zuba. He played over two hundred and fifty dates a year with Zuba and placed his songs in the Farrelly Brothers’ classic comedies Kingpin and There’s Something About Mary. Once he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, Wallace drummed with the space rockers Bipolaroid and the soul blues shouter Mathilda Jones. Hurricane Katrina sent Wallace north to Mississippi, where in his first week in Oxford, he was asked to join the Yalobushwackers with Jim Dickinson. Besides the Yalobushwackers, Wallace has also toured nationally and internationally with Kenny Brown, Reverend John Wilkins, the Como Mamas, Shannon McNally, Eric Deaton, Blue Mountain, and Garry Burnside. After twelve years in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Wallace now resides in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Betty Walton and Dr. Saahoon Hong are researchers and professors at Indiana University’s School of Social Work who are using machine learning — data analysis that automates analytical model building — to study almost 30,000 cases of adults using about 100 variables in a decade-long longitudinal study.
This innovative research is built off anonymized data from the Adult Needs and Strengths Assessment and is aimed at helping those coping with mental health issues, identify intersections mental health illness and suicidal ideation and develop a suicidal prevention/recovery model within the mental health system.

In This Too Is Sabotage narration states "the saboteur is malnutrition," showing underlying causes of workplace accidents, lost man-hours, and losses in wartime productivity are often caused by the poor nutrition of workers' diets. Announcing "we're fighting against improper eating," a wartime nutritional program built from 7 food groups is detailed. At a dramatized presentation demonstrating meal planning following these nutritional guidelines before an audience of women, the presenter states that the guidelines "will help us with the job that has been given to us women, as the guardians of the vigor and vitality of our families."

This presentation is the first step in an answer to Emily Drabinski’s 2013 challenge to library and information science (LIS) professionals to think about ways in which to ‘queer the library catalog,’ and to represent identity as historically constructed and described. Beginning with a brief outline of the troubled history between marginalized groups and LIS classifications, I examine some of the proposals suggested over the past half-decade by researchers—and their limitations. Instead of starting anew, or using ‘uninformed’ social tagging/folksonomies, I propose a ‘turn’ to the catalogs and controlled vocabularies of archives and special collections, which frequently reckon with unclassifiable material.
Following through on that turn, I will discuss how linked data and linked data vocabularies are currently being used by several digital archives—along with some possible lessons for the LIS field as a whole. The radical and subversive use of linked data by queer digital archives offers a partial solution to the conundrum of minoritized and historical representation in the catalog. Finally, I will conclude by describing my own experiences and considerations in the construction of a new linked data vocabulary.

The Ink Spots vocal group had its origin in the early 1930s in Indianapolis and appeared regularly on WLW-AM in Cincinnati. The group bolted to national popularity with its recording of the ballad “If I Didn’t Care” in 1939. Between 1940 and 1949, The Ink Spots had more than 30 hits on the pop charts.

Summary:
Starting with only 30 sows, Wayne and Helen Drake built what would become a multi-generational family hog breeding business now involving thousands of pigs. Far from being an isolated practice, Wayne says he learned a lot from other hog farmers. “I learned a lot from the old people, that’s what I called them. You’d sit around the pens, and chew the fat with them, and you pick up a lot of ideas, and exchange ideas. It was really educational for me as a 4-H kid.”
Both Wayne and Helen Drake began showing at the State Fair in the 1940s and have continued nearly every year since. Their children, now running the family business, Drake Purebred Farms, have also been showing hogs their whole lives, and have amassed numerous awards and accolades themselves. For the Drakes, hog breeding and showing has turned into a family tradition with no signs of slowing down.
IU journalism Distinguished Professor Emeritus David Weaver has been connected with IU nearly all of his academic life, but acclaim for his work comes from across the globe.
A native Hoosier, Weaver, BA’68, MA’69, left the state briefly to earn his Ph.D. in 1974 from the University of North Carolina. He returned that same year to join the IU journalism faculty, embarking on a 38-year career as a researcher and professor.
Weaver quickly gained recognition for his work, especially in agenda setting, which explores media’s effects on the public, and studies the influence of news sources, other media and journalistic traditions on the news agenda. He has applied the theory to such topics as the relationship among media bias, public opinion and Congressional policy in one 58-year time span.
Weaver is author of more than a dozen books, including the award-winning American Journalists series, which he initiated in the 1970s with his mentor, journalism Professor Emeritus Cleve Wilhoit. Taking the pulse of journalists to gauge what they think about their jobs and their industry produced information no one else was collecting.
Collaborating with other professors at the school, he conducted subsequent surveys in 1982, 1992 and 2002. The most recent, The Global Journalist in the 21st Century, was published this year with journalism professor Lars Willnat, one of Weaver’s former students.
From 1988 until his retirement in 2011, Weaver was the IU Roy W. Howard Professor. In 2009, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, an organization he had served as president. Weaver also has served as president of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research.
In 2010, IU named him Distinguished Professor, the first journalism faculty member to achieve this honor. Earlier this year, he was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame.

That studio is now on tour as part of the global celebration "Leonard Bernstein at 100."

Glenn Webber spent 20 years at WRTV-TV in Indianapolis as an announcer and newscaster. It was, however, his partnership with Joe Pickett on WFBM-FM in the early 1960s that cemented his legacy. Known as the “Pickett-Webber Thing,” their morning drive time radio show was arguably the first great personality duo of Indianapolis radio. They enjoyed high ratings for nearly two decades. After leaving WFBM-FM, Webber was the public face and announcer for the Indiana State Police, before becoming part of the original staff of WENS-FM, launched in 1981. He died in 2011 at age 90.

Vicki Weger traveled with her dad’s “Harry Weger and the Big Ten Western Feature” shows that signed on in 1955 on WTHI-TV in Terre Haute, Indiana. She performed in many shows across the country. In 1978, she began freelancing as a newspaper, radio and TV journalist, and in 1982 was hired at WTHI-TV. There she worked the assignment desk and later became the station’s managing editor, taking her freelancing work to the network level with travels to many foreign countries and coverage of notable domestic stories. In 1998 she moved to Chicago as a full-time freelance producer for “The PBS NewsHour” and “Religion & Ethics” and similar work for NBC and ABC.
