Sowah Mensah (St. Paul, Minnesota) Sowah Mensah is an ethnomusicologist, composer and master drummer from Ghana. Sowah taught music in both Ghana and Nigeria before becoming a music professor at both Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he also directs each school’s African Music Ensemble. Mensah also directs the African Music Ensemble at the University of Minnesota and is the director of Sankofa, a Ghanaian Folklore and Dance Ensemble in the Twin Cities. He has performed extensively in the U.S., Latin America, and Africa, where he performed with the Ghana National Symphony Orchestra. In the U.S., he has performed with stars like Max Roach, Don Cherry, Roscoe Mitchell, and Julius Hemphill. Hong Wang (Las Vegas, Nevada) Hong Wang is an internationally touring multi-instrumentalist. He graduated from Nanjing Normal University’s Music Department, where he mainly studied the erhu (two-string bowed instrument) and composition. He studied oboe at Nanjing Arts Academy, and after graduation, he taught songwriting and oboe at the music department for about five years. Later, he changed his career to music editor at Jiangsu Province Institute of Arts. Hong has been living in the United States since the early 1990s. He has composed several pieces for the Chinese ensembles and contemporary mixed bands, earning him a number of awards. He has recorded for several recording companies, including Sony Classical, Sega, TDK, Sound World, and Water Baby Records. He is also a zhonghu soloist for the album Monk's Moods, which was nominated for a Grammy Award. Hong has performed extensively at many international festivals and with several renowned musicians. As a leading contemporary musician, he has played several concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area, such as Thundering Across the Sky; A Musical Dialogue with Dancing Lions; New Music Concert with the Citywinds; and Three Sound, an experimental music series by composer Carl Stone, sheng master Wu Wei, matouqin master Li Bo, and bass clarinetist and composer Gene Coleman. In the 1970s, Keith Ruble learned bowl hewing from legendary bowl maker Bill Day, while the two were demonstrating at the Indiana State Fair’s Pioneer Village. More than forty years later, Keith continues the craft, using an adze to chop out vessels in a variety of shapes, including traditional rectangles, ovals, animals, and even the state of Indiana. This version of the documentary does not have narration. This video follows Keith through the creative process: cutting out blanks, chopping out the container, and finishing a bowl.

A bowl adze is a special and hard to find tool used to hew or chop bowls. Machinist and blacksmith Dave Voges began making these special adzes when his friend Keith Ruble asked him if he could help him design better tool. Based on Keith’s bowl-hewing knowledge and Dave’s skill, the two designed what many consider one of the best bowl adzes available. Bowl hewers across Indiana prize these special tools. When the elder blacksmith learned that Jon Kay from Indiana University was going to video him making his tools, he decided to have some fun and affix a plaque from his alma mater and IU rival university, Purdue, on his power hammer. Sadly, Dave passed away before this project could be completed. I had intended to interview him about the making process, but it was not to be. Kay dedicate this video to the memory of David Flesher Voges (1940-2017) of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Generations of Alan Richards’ family has lived in Brown County, where log houses and split-rail fences have remained part of the landscape. Once his grandchildren were old enough, he recruited them to help him split rails at the local Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Show in Nashville. This video was shot of Alan and his grandson Porter splitting rails at an Arts in the Parks event at TC Steele State Historic Site. From straight grain red and black oak trees, Alan starts to split the log with an ax; once the log cracks, Porter uses a set of wooden wedges and splitting maul to cleanly split the length of the log. They repeat this until the log is split into quarters. They can spend all day transforming a pile of logs into a length of fence.

Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake proceed from the belief that architecture is most resonant, beautiful, and artful when it connects deeply across levels and dimensions in ways that resolve into a new whole—a whole that is expansive, unified, and far greater than the sum of its parts. Their lecture FULLNESS: The Art of the Whole explores how beautiful design arises from the art and science of a deep, query-based research process, and includes many individuals and many (often competing) influences. Central among these influences is an ethical commitment to researching and envisioning anew the ways in which architecture and planning can address some of the most pressing issues of our time: the international crisis of affordable shelter and the role that carbon consumption plays in global warming and the decimation of our physical environment.
