Narrative literature reviews, systematic literature reviews, meta reviews, meta analyses, research in context: what should you do when you are asked to provide a review of the literature? What may have served as a fairly routine task in your early years as a student or scholar has been complicated by the growing volume of published research and the interdisciplinarity of many domains. It is becoming common practice to not only meticulously document the methods of your research design, but also to demonstrate the ways in which you searched the literature. Furthermore, there is increased value in the use of reviews to summarize the literature and find evidence across published results. Review articles have high value to the field—as demonstrated through citations—but can also lose their value when authors use ad hoc approaches or fail to acknowledge bias in how the review was assembled or analyzed.
Systematic literature reviews (SLRs) offer a way of producing less biased and more generalizable findings. SLRs use explicit selection criteria and a rigorous, rules-driven approach to the analysis of prior scholarship. The presenters will walk participants through the process of designing and conducting a systematic literature review using Cochrane-Campbell protocols, discussing bibliometric sources for systematically identifying literature, and providing tips and suggestions based on their own research experience.

The two academic disciplines linguistics and literary studies are often part of one common study program, but they differ in many respects: Their object of study, the methods they use, the type of knowledge they aim to generate, and also the presentation of their work in academic writing. I explore these differences by examining a corpus of German PhD theses from the two disciplines.
The focus of this talk will be twofold: First, I will discuss how we can identify differences between corpora in a data-driven way, i. e. with only few theoretical assumptions. While many data-driven approaches rely on surface-based frequencies of words and sequences of words, I argue for the additional use of syntactic annotations for this purpose. Second, I will present and contextualize the differences between academic texts in linguistics and literary studies that can be detected in this way. I conclude by reflecting more generally on how the results of a data-driven analysis can be integrated into existing theories.

Community engagement in the digital realm is always a careful balance between giving community members control of their own history and bringing academic expertise into the community. That balance isn't always the same from project to project. Dr. Wingo will draw on her experiences with two similar projects that had very different outcomes: an amazing community-led project to build the history of Rondo with the African American community in St. Paul Minnesota, and a community history project with the Crow tribe in Montana that has so far failed to get off the ground. She'll then walk the audience through best practices for thoughtful, considerate digital community engagement that acknowledge and privilege local community goals.

Visiting environmental journalist Angelina Davydova speaks about environmental problems and challenges in Russia, the policies to tackle them, and the civil society initiatives and movements that have grown to face them.
Davydova is currently based at UC Davis as a Humphrey Fellow. She was a past Reuters Foundation fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Oxford University (2006) and head of the German-Russian Office of Environmental Information (www.rnei.de). Since 2008 Davydova has been an observer of the UN Climate negotiation process (UNFCCC) and regularly publishes her work in Russian and international media (including the Thomson Reuters Foundation, The Conversation, Open Democracy, and Science Magazine). Davydova is also the curator of a two-year media training program, “Water Stories,” which features stories dedicated to water issues in Central Asia.

Textual data are central to the social sciences. However, they often require several pre-processing steps before they can be utilized for statistical analyses. This workshop introduces a range of Python tools to clean, organize, and analyze textual data. It is intended for researchers who are new to working with textual data, but are familiar with Python or have completed the Introduction to Python workshop. Computers with Python pre-loaded are available in the SSRC on a first-come, first-served basis.

Alternative forms of dissertations and theses are hot topics in higher education, but what is it really like to write one? Join Mary Borgo Ton, a Ph.D. candidate in British Literature, for a behind-the-scenes look at her dissertation which takes the form of a Scalar-powered website. The dissertation explores the global history of Victorian screen culture through virtual reality, 3D models, and interactive maps. As she reflects on the design process, she’ll introduce writing techniques that have helped her pivot to a wide range of forms and identify local resources for training, tools, and equipment.

“No children were really served in a community setting, in a public school, especially children with moderate to severe disabilities,” explains Pat Barber. Pat received her special education degree in the early 1970s from Indiana University. She started her teaching career at Stone Belt Center in Bloomington, Indiana. There were several classrooms in the building set up for infants to school age children. Pat describes what a school experience was like for a child with disabilities attending the Stone Belt Center. Pat was interviewed in 2017.
“No children were really served in a community setting, in a public school especially children with moderate to severe disabilities,” explains Pat Barber. Pat received her special education degree in the early ‘70s from Indiana University. She started her teaching career at Stone Belt Center in Bloomington, Indiana. There were eight to nine classrooms from infants to school age. Teachers were contracted by the public schools. The program ran year-round.
Somewhere in the late ‘70s to mid ‘80s, children started moving into public schools. Pat gives credit to families for pushing to have their children included in regular public schools. There were families and many teachers concerned if public schools were ready to provide the needed supports. Pat says, “I definitely feel that kids flourished. And one of the fears or worries that a lot of us had is that, can anybody do it as well as we can? They-- you know, people out there, they don't know kids with disabilities…I have to say in all my years of experience that they are. I mean, good teachers, good principals, good administrators are good for all kids."
After teaching preschool for 20 years, Pat became the coordinator of the school corporation’s preschool program. One of her roles was to support five-year-olds entering kindergarten. The transition process would start a year before kindergarten. Pat explains, “We had the most success when we lined out a very specific transition plan at least 12 months before that transition happened. And it included lots of visits. It included parents going to the classroom because they are so critical to help us develop a transition plan.”
Pat also discusses changes to the IEP process, experiences with home visits, assessment tools used in the classroom, and changes in attitudes. She says, “I don't know that I could say that there was one specific event or one specific law that changed. I think attitude started to change with the rules, with parents, and with people showing that kind of respect.” Pat was interviewed in 2017.

The current paradigm of political science suggests that authoritarian regimes suppress freedoms of speech and press as significant threats to autocratic survival. However, evidence now suggests that autocratic
governments can exploit such ostensibly democratic institutions in new and surprising ways. Among the most salient examples are Russia and China where media outlets (even the freest ones) figure in the autocratic toolbox, a phenomenon that lends credence to the idea of self-development of non-democratic regimes.

For the great many of us confounded by issues of cybersecurity, Dean Shanahan and founder of the Library Freedom Project Alison Macrina work through everything from Facebook to the NSA and web browsing to texting. Want to visualize and study a network in geographic space? We'll do a hands-on exercise with the powerful network analysis software Gephi. Learn about what files Gephi needs to create a network, some basic visualization and analysis options, and how to locate points in your network in geographic space. Participants will need a laptop with Gephi already installed.
In recent years, social scientists have increased their efforts to access new datasets from the web or from large databases. An easy way to access such data are Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This workshop introduces techniques for working with APIs in Python to retrieve data from sources such as Wikipedia or The New York Times. It is intended for researchers who are new to working with APIs, but are familiar with Python or have completed the Introduction to Python workshop.
In this workshop, we will retrieve data from the ProPublica Congress API. If you plan to follow along the code scripts, please take a few minutes to request a personal API key before the workshop: https://www.propublica.org/datastore/api/propublica-congress-api. Experimental economics uses human subjects to answer research and policy questions. This talk provides a brief discussion of the methodological guidelines adopted in economics experiments. It will also illustrate how experiments can be used to test the validity of economic theories or guide the design of market mechanisms and economic policies.
James Farmer, associate professor from IU SPEA, and Julia Valliant, a postdoc researcher from the Ostrom Workshop, talk with Dean Shanahan about farm transfers, capturing the stories of Hoosier farmers, and sharing those stories in the media.
The Vietnam War/American War Oral History project aims to identify engaging ways to bring scholars and the general public in direct contact with the lived experiences of both American and Vietnamese combatants or civilians who participated in the Vietnam War/American War.
The projects goal is record, preserve/archive, and make accessible to the public oral history interviews with those who fought and others who were impacted (including unheard voices) on all sides of the Vietnam War/American War in Vietnam and to emphasize listening across difference.
The project has evolved from initial concept through several prototype versions of the interface and advanced capabilities. This week: People living or working near gas stations might be exposed to a far higher level of toxic fumes than previously thought, and we take a look at a restaurant named the best eco-friendly restaurant in the state of Indiana.
Experimental designs remain the gold standard for assessing causality; perhaps because of this, the use of experiments has grown rapidly in most social science fields such as economics, political science, sociology, and others. While laboratory studies remain popular in some fields, there is increasing interest in bringing the power of experimental designs to more diverse samples. Survey experiments offer the capability to assess causality in a broad range of samples, including targeted samples of specific populations or in large-scale nationally representative samples. The rise of online workplaces and the TESS program offer the ability to bring these samples to applied researchers at a minimal cost, greatly expanding the possibilities for research. This workshop will focus on how to design quality survey experiments, giving researchers the tools to implement best practices. I will also advocate for survey experiments as a tool for tests of intersectionality and other theoretical questions requiring diverse samples.
