In episode 86, Emily Miles speaks with Barbara Restle, environmental activist and press freedom advocate. A childhood in 1930s Austria, where Nazi occupation came to suppress independent reporting, led Restle to eventually study journalism at Indiana University. In 2017, Restle contributed funding to the Media School for the study of the Freedom of Information Act and confidential source protections. Limited to a Bolex, a tripod, a light meter, and 100 feet of Kodak 16mm B&W reversal film, we captured the film digitization phase of the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative (MDPI) at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. The film was shot in chronological order of the MDPI film digitization process and all editing was done in camera.

Wounded Galaxies: 1968 – Beneath the Paving Stones, the Beach is a festival and symposium produced by The Burroughs Century Ltd., welcoming scholars, writers, artists, archivists, filmmakers, performers, and others interested in exploring the intellectual and aesthetic legacy of 1968, during its 50th Anniversary year.
The festival subtitle is a translation of the French slogan “Sous les pavés, la plage!,” a popular resistance graffiti in France Mai ’68 that refers to both the sand beneath cobblestones lifted by students to hurl at police as well as the ‘Situationist’ conviction that the streets–the expression of capital and consumption–could be rediscovered by abandoning a regimented life.

For both theoretical and logistical reasons, many social scientists turn to media texts—archival newspapers, radio and television broadcasts, podcasts, Twitter feeds, etc.—to understand the society that produced them. It may seem easy, because as a regular consumer and producer of media, you are already constantly analyzing the mediated discourse around you: parsing sentences, assessing the veracity of a claim, and making judgments as to the authority, intelligence, and background of a writer or speaker. But how might you denaturalize your “native” media literacy and go about this in a more systematic and rigorous way? In this hands-on workshop, we will sample some of the key methods for analyzing mediated discourse: transcription, critical discourse analysis, building and working with a corpus, capturing digital circulation, and multimodal analysis. Some examples will come from Russian media, but this workshop is open to all IU graduate students.
Python has become the lead instrument for data scientists to collect, clean, and analyze data. As a general purpose programming language, Python is flexible and well-suited to handle large datasets. This workshop is designed for social scientists, who are interested in using Python, but have no idea where to start. Our goal is to "de-mystify" Python and to teach social scientists how to manipulate and examine data that deviate from the clean, rectangular survey format. Computers with Python pre-loaded are available in the SSRC on a first-come, first-served basis. This workshop is intended for social scientists who are new to programming. No experience required.
Bruce Jackson speaks about The B-Side: Negro Folklore from Texas State Prisons. A Record Album Interpretation, a production by the The Wooster Group, New York’s most celebrated experimental theater company. The B-Side is based on the classic LP, Negro Folklore from Texas State Prisons, based on Jackson’s 1964 field recordings. Peter Marks of the Washington Post called the production “ravishing,” and “a richly resonant auditory experience,” concluding that “the experience is history in melody, an a cappella song cycle that reveals how men sentenced to hard labor endured, forging bonds through music.” New York Times theater reviewer Ben Brantley named it one of the 10 best plays of the year. Jackson talks about the process of transforming his LP into theater with The Wooster Group, illustrating his presentation with photographs and audio and video clips.

With rotating breakout sessions, you’ll get face-time with each of the presenters and plenty of opportunity for lively discussion.
P. Sainath, the former Rural Affairs Editor at The Hindu, where he forced public attention to India’s epidemic of farmer suicides, will discusses relationship between journalism, cultural documentation, and social justice. His current project, the People’s Archive of Rural India (ruralindiaonline.org) is a volunteer-sustained multimedia website documenting everyday life, cultural traditions, and socioeconomic and environmental challenges across India, with special attention to women’s labor. Among his many career awards are the 2007 Ramon Magsaysay Award (the “Asian Nobel”) and the first Amnesty International’s Global Human Rights Journalism Prize in 2000. His 1996 book, Everybody Loves a Good Drought: Stories from India’s Poorest Districts, was reissued as a Penguin Classic in 2012.

This introductory workshop will walk through IBM SPSS and SAS JMP software while giving an overview of how to identify what types of data analysis tools to use for a project, along with basic “DIY” instructions. We will discuss the most common analysis tools for describing your data and performing significance tests (Correlation, T-test, ANOVA, Cross-tabs, etc), and how they should be selected based on the type of data and the type of research question you have. This is geared towards students or faculty beginning their foray into quantitative analysis of research data, would like an introduction to SPSS or JMP, or would just like to step back and get a framework for how to navigate “what analysis to use when.”
Network analysis provides a data-driven analysis and visualization exploration of relationships in digital arts & humanities, but within that umbrella is a variety of approaches to understanding interaction between elements of a system. We'll use your research question to help you think through how these relationships might work in a network analysis of your own and demonstrate how an in-classroom network-analysis activity can also help your students see relationships unfold in your discipline.
