In episode 92, Dean Shanahan and IU Media School Professor of Practice Elaine Monaghan speak to award-winning documentary maker Ruth O’Reilly. O'Reilly worked as a journalist in Ireland, particularly Northern Ireland between 1989 and 2014, and participated in Indiana University’s first “Representing Religion” symposium.
More than 1,600 institutions have used NSSE to collect important information about the quality of the undergraduate experience. NSSE provides actionable data through refined measures, easy to use reports, and online reporting. But NSSE was never just about data-gathering-it was created to stimulate improvement. Yet institutional action in response to NSSE results remains an ongoing challenge. This session highlights the most recent report of field-tested lessons from about two dozen institutions that have taken advantage of updated NSSE results to catalyze change on campus to address the question: What facilitates institutional action?
“It's an interesting question to ask, how I got interested in the field of disability services,” states Dr. Mary Ciccarelli. When Dr. Ciccarelli began her training in the late ‘70s, early ‘80s, there was little specific attention paid to disabilities. As an internist and pediatrician, Dr. Ciccarelli found it harder to accommodate all her patients. Other pediatricians, who took care of youth with special health care needs, were transitioning patients to her practice. She decided she needed to find a better way of doing things. As a result, Dr. Ciccarelli collaborated with IPIN, Indiana Parent Information Network, on a pilot project funded by Indiana Maternal Child Health to develop transition services for youth with disabilities.
Dr. Ciccarelli discusses the challenges families face when moving from pediatric to adult care. It can be frightening for parents to let go and support their children to become more autonomous in making health care decisions. As a person moves from pediatric care to adult health care services, there may be a need to redefine the individual’s care team. In addition, billing codes and language in mental health services differs between pediatrics and the adult service system.
“How do we improve healthy opportunities for persons with disabilities in our state?” Dr. Ciccarelli talks about her experience working with Special Olympics of Indiana athletes. For the past few years, she has assisted with providing health-screenings for the athletes at the State Games. Dr. Ciccarelli discusses the need to educate people with disabilities and caregivers on how to live healthier lives. To better serve patients with disabilities, Dr. Ciccarelli describes the training IU medical students receive. “I think there's better methods today than there were in the late '70's,” Today, the Indiana School of Medicine curriculum includes training on the culture of disability, rights of people with disabilities, and teaming with other professionals. In 2017, folklorist Jon Kay traveled to Southwest China to join a team of researchers from the United States, the Anthropological Museum of Guangxi, and the Nandan Baiku Yao Eco-Museum who were documenting the basket and textile traditions of the Baiku Yao people in Nandan County, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The members of the research team visited a home in Manjiang village to inventory the baskets collected and used by a local family. As the fieldworkers worked photographing and measuring baskets, Mr. Lu Bingzhao came into the house and picked up a mallet, which he showed everyone and then went outside. Kay did not speak Mandarin or the local Baiku Yao dialect, but felt Mr. Bingzhao had something he wanted to show the team, so he followed the man outside and saw him lay the mallet on the trunk of a small felled tree for measurement; Kay realized he was going to make a mallet, so he grabbed a camera and began shooting. Mr. Bingzhao worked as the children played nearby. Neighbors and family members stopped by to visit as they returned home from picking greens. Mr. Bingzhao worked steadily as people came and went. With heavy chops, he used a billhook to quickly remove the excess wood. With the same tool, he then shaved the mallet’s handle smooth, using a pulling motion. Finally, at the end of the video, just as he completes the mallet, he gives it to his daughter-in-law. Technical Note: The video was shot with a Canon 90D camera with a RØDE stereo microphone attached to the camera’s hot-shoe mount.

The MDPI project posed a tremendous technical challenge: digitize and process around 280,000 audio and video assets by the University’s bicentennial. The first objects began processing in June 2015 and by the summer of 2016, the major problems had been worked out and the processing was proceeding smoothly.
Then the discussions of film processing began.
In theory, processing film is the same as audio and video. On paper, it seems easier: even though the time allotted is less than A/V, there are only 25,000 reels to process.
In reality, however, it is a very different beast. An hour of film scanned at 2K resolution is 20x larger than an hour of video. When a film is scanned at 4K, it is 80x larger than video. Additionally, the film preservation master consists of not just a few files, like we see in audio or video, but thousands of files: a picture for every frame. Like all preservation masters, these files must be validated.
This session will address the challenges and solutions that were needed for the back end processing to be able to process film efficiently.

3D digitization, born-digital 3D objects, and Virtual Reality (VR) - the techniques to create these kinds of items and the access and scholarly research applications for these items within libraries and cultural heritage institutions are becoming more real (and less virtual) as costs come down and technical equipment becomes more friendly to use. IU already has 3D digital collections that are actively growing. We need a way to describe these items so they are discoverable and accessible for research use, even when that means extremely large files that can require specialized software to recreate or evaluate the models. We also need to be able to preserve 3D digital and VR objects. This talk will consider how we can accomplish these goals, the work currently occurring among libraries and cultural heritage institutions, and how best to apply metadata in the third dimension.

A childhood in 1930s Austria, where Nazi occupation came to suppress independent reporting, led Restle to eventually study journalism at Indiana University. Nine out of ten institutions administer NSSE on a regular cycle such as every one, two, or three years. The 2018 administration marks the sixth year of the updated version of NSSE, which means that almost all institutions have multiple years of results from the updated NSSE. Of course, institutions eagerly use their multi-year data to enrich analyses and to answer additional questions about the quality of their student learning experiences. The purpose of this webinar is to discuss some of the best approaches to examining changes and trends in engagement patterns, and evaluating specific campus initiatives.
This talk will briefly outline Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in comparison with more familiar statistical models (such as linear regression) and review several R packages tailored for the SEM community. In addition, these packages will be compared to perhaps the most well-known commercial package available, MPlus.
Bettye Dunham got her start in the disability field in 1975. She was a support person to an Indiana University student needing assistance with note taking and studying. Bettye says, “The things I learned from Chris really endeared me to the field.” Bettye went on to work 19 years at Developmental Services in Columbus, Indiana where she started a workshop program in Jennings County. This workshop would include residents from Muscatutuck State Developmental Center. “The VR counselors and I interviewed around 300 individuals, three to 400 individuals, residents of Muscatatuck…that was probably one of the most interesting points in my career…Talking with them about how they felt about being there, what their dreams and hopes were,” explained Bettye. Eventually, they hired around 20 people to work in the Jennings workshop.
At the time of her 2013 interview, Bettye had been the C.E.O. of Rauch in New Albany, Indiana for over 20 years. Rauch started in 1953. Bettye says, “There were parents that had children with disabilities, all different ages of disabilities that came together. And they said, you know, there ought to be something. There ought to be some service or something that can help our children down the road and help them develop.” Bettye explains several of the services Rauch has offered including a sheltered workshop, American Sign Language, Healthy Families program, and community opportunities. She also addresses the challenges the agency has faced over the years. “To me, one of the most significant steps in the history of our field in Indiana was that 317 Task Force and putting some blueprints in place for what the future of services should look like,” explains Bettye. Kathy Davis, who was the Secretary of Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) at that time, chaired the 317 Task Force. Bettye on was on the 317 Task Force and talks about a few of the outcomes. In her interview, Bettye also discusses supported employment, natural supports, and the changes she has seen in the disability field over the years. One struggle Bettye sees is health care. She says, “One of the future challenges is going to be what happens to managed care and health care and how our population survives through that change, if that change comes about.”

We surveyed all articles in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science, and the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General that mentioned the term "Likert," and found that 100% of the articles that analyzed ordinal data did so using a metric model. We demonstrate that analyzing ordinal data as if they were metric can systematically lead to errors. We demonstrate false alarms (i.e., detecting an effect where none exists, Type~I errors) and failures to detect effects (i.e., loss of power, Type~II errors). We demonstrate systematic inversions of effects, for which treating ordinal data as metric indicates the opposite ordering of means than the true ordering of means. We show the same problems --- false alarms, misses, and inversions --- for interactions in factorial designs and for trend analyses in regression. We demonstrate that averaging across multiple ordinal measurements does not solve or even ameliorate these problems. We provide simple graphical explanations of why these mistakes occur. Moreover, we point out that there is no sure-fire way to detect these problems by treating the ordinal values as metric, and instead we advocate use of ordered-probit models (or similar) because they will better describe the data. Finally, although frequentist approaches to some ordered-probit models are available, we use Bayesian methods because of their flexibility in specifying models and their richness and accuracy in providing parameter estimates.
