- The practice of text mining in digital humanities is phallogocentric. Text mining, a particular kind of data mining in which predictive methods are deployed for pattern discovery in texts is primarily focused on pre-assumed meanings of The Word. In order to determine whether or not the machine has found patterns in text mining, we begin with a “ground truth” or labels that signify the presence of meaning. This work typically presupposes a binary logic between lack and excess (Derrida, Dissemination, 1981). There is meaning in the results or there is not. Sound, in contrast, is aporetic. To mine sound is to understand that ground truth is always indeterminate. Humanists have few opportunities to use advanced technologies for analyzing sound archives, however. This talk describes the HiPSTAS (High Performance Sound Technologies for Access and Scholarship) Project, which is developing a research environment for humanists that uses machine learning and visualization to automate processes for analyzing sound collections. HiPSTAS engages digital literacy head on in order to invite humanists into concerns about machine learning and sound studies. Hearing sound as digital audio means choosing filter banks, sampling rates, and compression scenarios that mimic the human ear. Unless humanists know more about digital audio analysis, how can we ask, whose ear we are modeling in analysis? What is audible, to whom? Without knowing about playback parameters, how can we ask, what signal is noise? What signal is meaningful? To whom? Clement concludes with a brief discussion about some observations on the efficacy of using machine learning to facilitate generating data about spoken-word sound collections in the humanities.

- The maker movement, a subculture affiliated with a do-it-yourself ethos and, more recently, a passion for digital technologies, has been growing over the last two decades and is making its way onto the university campus . Digital humanities (DH) centers in particular have taken up the maker ethos, incorporating digital technologies such as 3D printers and microcomputers into their spaces. While recent literature acknowledges both the lack of female presence in makerspaces and a desire for more diversity in the digital humanities, no study of making has yet employed a feminist approach to understanding why and how these issues arise in the first place. The Centering Gender Project aims to do just this, by employing Wajcman’s (2004) theory of TechnoFeminism in an examination of public and academic examples of making. Martin's talk will showcase preliminary findings from her first on-site visits to makerspaces, and challenge the audience to think through ways their learning spaces could diversify their population.

- Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) offers flexible statistical models for the social science researcher. A variety of software packages are available for implementing SEM with researchers’ datasets and are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This talk will briefly outline SEM in comparison with more familiar statistical models (such as linear regression) and review several R packages tailored for the SEM community. In addition, these packages are compared to perhaps the most well-known commercial package available, MPlus.

- Summary:
- Starting with only 30 sows, Wayne and Helen Drake built what would become a multi-generational family hog breeding business now involving thousands of pigs. Far from being an isolated practice, Wayne says he learned a lot from other hog farmers. “I learned a lot from the old people, that’s what I called them. You’d sit around the pens, and chew the fat with them, and you pick up a lot of ideas, and exchange ideas. It was really educational for me as a 4-H kid.” Both Wayne and Helen Drake began showing at the State Fair in the 1940s and have continued nearly every year since. Their children, now running the family business, Drake Purebred Farms, have also been showing hogs their whole lives, and have amassed numerous awards and accolades themselves. For the Drakes, hog breeding and showing has turned into a family tradition with no signs of slowing down.

- Summary:
- A fixture at the Indiana State Fair for many years, Bill Bailey coordinates the entertainment in the Pioneer Village, inviting musicians, storytellers, and other entertainers from around the state to perform on the village’s two rustic stages. His relationship with the fair began in 1991, when he played percussion with a band in the village—but Bill is no ordinary percussionist. A self-proclaimed “idiophonist,” he makes his rhythmic music with spoons, washboards, and a variety of other everyday items. Bill played percussion throughout his school years, but sold his drums when he went to college, remaining “music-less” for a while. Then in 1976, a couple that played old-time music moved next door, and he was inspired to try his hand at the mandolin, guitar, and harmonica—yet percussion continued to call to him. He picked up playing the spoons, and eventually began tapping out his syncopated rhythms on a washboard and a variety of other resonate objects such as a wooden shoe, triangles, and horse shoes. Before long, Bill was playing multiple styles of music including old-time, blues, and jug band. In 1991, Bill played with a couple of bands that were performing in the fair’s Pioneer Village. He was hooked. Each year he returned and played with a variety of musicians. In 2003, Gerry Gray, the original music coordinator for the village, chose Bill as her replacement. He continued to book the old-time and dulcimer music that had been featured at the fair since the 1970s, but he also expanded the program to include a greater variety of traditional music and other forms of entertainment. One successful program that he helped develop was a tribute to the WLS National Barn Dance, which featured the music and theatrical routines of the popular radio show in the early 20th Century. For six years, large audiences came to see this reenactment show. Besides his work at the Indiana State Fair, Bill serves as a musical ambassador for the Columbus Washboard Company, the last manufacturer of hand-built washboards in North America. Bill paints and outfits their boards, transforming them into musical instruments. The company sells dozens of Bill’s musical boards, which they ship all over the world. Each year, Bill also travels to Ohio to perform at their Washboard Music Festival to promote this unique musical genre. Today, in addition to his own musical pursuits, Bill continues to coordinate the entertainment at the Pioneer Village. From old-time country, bluegrass, gospel, and blues, to storytelling and fiddling contests, the stages at the village help create a nostalgic atmosphere where fairgoers can escape the pressures of contemporary life. And while he makes sure the Pioneer Village stage shows run smoothly, visitors can still find Bill Bailey tapping out his upbeat rhythms and entertaining audiences.

- 2013 marks Mary Schwartz’s 50th consecutive year of exhibiting at the Indiana State Fair. Active in 4-H as a girl, Mary started embroidering as a compromise with her mother: she could continue to show sheep if she participated in an activity her mother believed to be more feminine, such as embroidery. While Mary works in several different styles of needlepoint, her favorite medium is crewel embroidery, a technique that uses wool thread to create depths of color and shading. “I like the feel of the wool,” Mary said. “I was a sheep producer at one time – my family was – and so therefore I’m going to continue to support the sheep people.” Earning numerous blue ribbons over the years, Mary’s skill and artistry in embroidery represents just one aspect of her contributions to the Indiana State Fair. She has worked for the past several years as coordinator of the Antiques division in the Home and Family Arts Building. She enthusiastically supports her department, treating her co-workers as family and welcoming and encouraging new participants and visitors each year. The distinction of being named a State Fair Master is a highlight, said Mary, as she joins the ranks of the many distinguished and talented people that have preceded her: “It is really an honor to be recognized for the state. You stop and think about how many exhibitors are on this campus at one time, to be singled out and saying, ‘we recognize you for your years of servitude to us’ – it’s a big thing.”

- Summary:
- Donna Jo Copeland has exhibited textiles for forty years at the Indiana State Fair, winning numerous awards and gaining recognition for the distinct style of her creations. At the knee of her great grandmother, she learned the skills of knitting, tatting, flat pattern work, and sewing. After purchasing a loom, she taught herself to spin and weave. Taking inspiration from the materials she produces on her farm, she creates between 20 and 25 entries every year for the fair. With her daughter and granddaughter, she is now part of three generations who continue the traditions of needlework at the State Fair.

- Born March 7, 1939, Mary Alice Collins grew up in the kitchen. Learning how to cook and bake was just part of living on her family’s Hancock County farm. After finishing 10 years of 4-H and starting a career as a home economics teacher, she began participating at the Indiana State Fair in 1955. Over the decades, she won thousands of ribbons for her pies, cakes, breads and cookies, and has been featured on "The View" and in a cookbook published by "Midwest Living." After retiring, she spent her time passing on winning tips and tricks to family and community members hoping to follow in her footsteps. In 2015, the year following the production of this documentary, Mary Alice suffered suffering septic shock, and all of her fingers and both legs below the knee were amputated. Nevertheless after much therapy and determination, Mary continued to bake pies for the Indiana State Fair--and continued to take home ribbons. Mary Alice Collins passed away on September 9, 2019. Her story was featured in the introduction to the book "The Expressive Lives of Elders: Folklore, Art, and Aging" (Indiana University Press, 2018).

- Andy Imlay, a part-time stand-up comedian who performs across southern Indiana, shares stories about life, school, and relationships, and using the power of laughter to address common misconceptions about people with disabilities. Andy is from Richland City, Indiana, which is southeast of Evansville. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 18 months, he was “mainstreamed” into regular classes from first through twelfth grades in the South Spencer School Corporation. - "We'd learned that, it's no surprise, people with disabilities were the most underserved group in the mortgage and lending industry." In this video, Deborah McCarty explains the launching of the Back Home in Indiana Alliance in 1997. The original focus of the Alliance was on increasing low rates of home ownership among people with disabilities. Since then it has worked to advocate for a larger supply of integrated housing in the state that is both affordable and accessible. Deborah discusses the partnerships that have been instrumental in the Alliance's work and in its recognition by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development as one of 100 best partnerships in the country. Deborah, who is Executive Director of the Back Home in Indiana Alliance, was interviewed in 2017.

- In 1964, Paul decided to interview at the Fort Wayne State School as a recreation aide. They had football and baseball games, dances, and a summer camp. Although these activities were fun, the experience was different in retrospect. The daily living of getting up, bathing, eating, and going to bed was very regimented. Life was miserable for the residents. Paul saw a lot of mistreatment of residents during his eight years at (the renamed) Fort Wayne State Hospital and Training Center. After leaving the hospital, Paul worked at the Division on Mental Retardation and Department of Mental Health. Part of his job was to bring new ideas to the disability field. He helped introduce group homes to Indiana in the 1970s. In developing regulations for group home operations, Paul and colleagues were concerned the institutional model would be adopted by the group homes. Paul states, “A lot of that proved true – and it was again people with good intentions, or at least they thought they had good intentions.” Paul discusses initiatives funded by the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities. He believes the most important project the Council ever funded was Partners in Policymaking. The program brings together people with disabilities and family members for eight weekends over the course of a year to develop leadership skills. He explains how the Council evolved when Suellen Jackson-Boner became the administrator. When asked to identify the biggest changes in the disability field over his 30 plus years, Paul stated the closing of the institutions. In addition, Paul shares his observations on community attitude changes. Paul retired from the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities around 2009. He was interviewed in 2013.

- "People coming into the business today, I can't imagine them seeing the advancement and the progress that we saw." Randy Krieble talks about witnessing the evolution of institutional custody and control of people with disablities into community-oriented living arrangements offering choice and opportunity. Randy worked for the State of Indiana in positions related to disability starting in 1970. Forty-one years later he retired as assistant director of Indiana's Family and Social Service Administration, Division of Disability. In this 2012 interview, Randy discusses his experience working with people with intellectual/developmental disabilities inside several state institutions, and how as a state official he returned to one of them to effect its closure. From 1977 to 1980, Randy worked at Muscatatuck State Hospital and Training Center, starting in a behavior modification unit. He describes the dehumanizing conditions he found there, some of which eventually led to the institution shutting its doors in 2005. Randy describes the complexity of the transition process, during which time he lived at the Center during the week. There were strong community and family reactions to the shut down, and extensive efforts to find appropriate community placements for its residents. Randy also discusses the evolution of services for people with disabilities in Indiana and the leaders and advocates who contributed to those changes.

- “Forty-seven years ago I gave birth to a child who was born with multiple disabilities. This was back in New Hampshire. It was before there were any laws about education or anything. And I found problems getting services for her. They wouldn't let her in school, but they would send the truant officer to my home once a month to find out why she wasn't in school,” recalls Donna Roberts in a 2013 interview. Donna lived in New Hampshire at the time of her daughter’s birth and eventually started a school for children with disabilities in New Hampshire. After Donna moved to Indiana with her family, she became the Executive Director of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Indiana (UCP of Greater Indiana). In her interview, Donna discusses the beginning of the organization, services provided by UCP of Greater Indiana and the changes she has seen over the years. "I joke with everybody that I take a day, I sit at home with a two-liter bottle of Diet Pepsi and a huge box of tissues and I read all the essays,” recounts Donna about the Attitude Essay Contest. The contest encourages elementary and middle school students to write about their own attitudes or the attitudes of others. Donna says, “I firmly believe -- and the essays prove -- kids want to focus on what is the same, what is similar, what do they have in common with somebody, not what is something that's going to put up a barrier to them.” Looking toward the future, Donna has advice for young professionals, “they’re going to have to build that road to where we need to go. But I think it's important that they listen to the self-advocates. I think it's important that they look -- it sounds so cliché -- but look outside the box.”

- “I get the benefits of free movies. So it's a good all-around job,” explains Cori of her job at the movie theater. Cori works part-time taking tickets. When Cori was interviewed in 2013, she had been working at the movie theater for the past 13 years. In 1988 while living in Colorado, Cori was in a car accident and sustained a head injury. Where Cori lived, services were limited. Her parents decided to move to Bloomington, Indiana to be closer to Cori’s sister and there would be more services available to Cori. Cori discusses how her life changed after her accident. She says, “It's really hard because brain injury, as you well know, has memory as the main problem.” Cori describes the accommodations her employer has made for her including writing down reminders on the movie schedule at her station. At home, Cori has her memory book to help organize her days. In addition to her love of movies, Cori enjoys exercising. “I have to keep my lungs and diaphragm exercised because it really, really affects my speech,” explains Cori. Some days she combines movies with exercising by putting on movie while she rides her NordicTrack at home. “It just revitalizes me and I feel good the rest of day,” states Cori. In her spare time, Cori likes to spend time with her family and painting. She has also been active with various advocacy groups.

- “I found in going around the state and meeting with organizations, they didn't want to talk to one another," states Don Melloy of his experience in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s in organizing Arc chapters in Indiana. The original focus of The Arc was to provide programs for children with disabilities excluded from public school. Don found parent groups didn’t always include all children with disabilities. “But they in themselves had barriers in their minds that it wasn't all handicapped children. There was some distinction between degrees of handicap. And those were artificial barriers that kept rising over the many years of development,” explains Don. In addition to talking about The Arc's early focus on education, Don discusses Arc's movement away from sheltered workshops to community employment. Don himself was reluctant when it was suggested his daughter Cindy could have a community job. However, after seeing Cindy thrive in her job, Don said it was the best thing he and his wife ever did in agreeing to let Cindy find a community job. Don discusses hiring John Dickerson as The Arc's executive director. “He had the personality that would challenge the old school all the time.” That is something Don admired about John, even if he didn’t always agree with him. Don says, “You have to have people coming in to any organization that are willing to take a look at it from a different point of view." Don was interviewed in 2017.

- “I've seen some things change, a lot of things change for the better,” says Al Tolbert of the disabilities rights movement. In 1971, Al was in a training accident in Germany that left him paralyzed. After his accident, Al got involved in the Independent Living movement. He says the early days were very crude. “There were laws that people were trying to follow, but I don't think they had a central theme or a central place to go to ask questions or they didn't know exactly if they were doing things right.” When the ADA passed, people finally had guidelines and a place to call for answers. Many people didn’t see a need for the law. Al says, “I remember the chamber of commerce was not in favor of it.” People feared the ADA would put people out of work and hurt small businesses. Instead, Al believes the ADA has been an asset to employers and increased their productivity. Al explains the ADA is one of several laws that has improved the lives of people with disabilities. He discusses the Air Traffic Act and HAVA Act (Help America Vote Act). Despite the progress, Al knows there is more work to do. “There’s more to be done with the ADA in the implementation of it. So we’re not where we should be let’s put it that way. We have more growth to do.” Al was interviewed in 2009 at the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities Conference.

- In 2016, Betty Williams received the Champions of Equal Opportunity Award from the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities. Betty received the award for her leadership in promoting voting rights, serving on committees addressing disability issues, organizing self-advocate groups, and training across the country. Betty got her start in the early 1990s when she joined her local advocacy group. In 2014, Betty was appointed to the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. In addition to discussing her work on the national level, Betty shares stories about her work in Indiana. She was involved in changing the name of the MRDD commission to the DD commission. Betty reflects on her advocacy work with Darcus Nims. “She was like my friend, my mentor, my trainer,” explains Betty. Together, they helped incorporate Self-Advocacy of Indiana. They traveled the state training people on the importance of self-advocacy. Betty understands there is still work to be do, which is why she wants to be a part of self-advocacy until she retires. Betty says, “I am going to retire like normal people. You know, I am. I have that plan. But even then I might do something around self-advocacy, you know?” Betty Louise Williams was born in 1959 and died in 2018. She was interviewed in 2016.

- When Byron Smith was in sixth grade, his mother got a call from his teacher. She said, "Byron is out there on the monkey bars and he's sitting on the top bar and he's not hanging on with his hands." “My mom said, ‘Let him alone. Yes, he may fall. Yes, he may get hurt but as long as he's not being irreverent or grandstanding or behaving poorly, if he's just out there with the guys, shooting marbles in the gravel or climbing the monkey bars, let him go.' That was pretty much the attitude that my family had… do as much of everything with everybody as I could.” Byron recounts how he had attended public school for kindergarten and half of first grade in Bloomington, Indiana, before losing his sight due to eye disease. In 1951 "Bikey" entered the Indiana State School for the Blind. He learned Braille while attending grades 1 through 5 at the residential school in Indianapolis. With concerted advocacy from his parents and many others, he was permitted to re-enter public school in Bloomington for the 6th grade, the first blind pupil to transfer from the state school. Byron attended University Junior High and High Schools and graduated Indiana University with a degree in radio and television. He shares some stories about how he got into the field of radio. He worked at the University for over 37 years as a reporter, editor, and radio producer. Byron was active as a member and chairperson of the City of Bloomington’s Council for Community Accessibility and was co-founder of the Handicapped Improvisational Theater, later known as Diversity Theatre. Byron also talks about the work he did with his wife Patsy in audio description. Byron K. Smith was interviewed in 2013. A life-long Bloomington, Indiana resident, he died in 2016.

- On December 24, 1958, Mary Lou and Don Melloy were told their daughter Cindy should be placed in an institution. Mary Lou said, “My response was that they didn’t know what they were talking about…a very unhappy, aggressive mother left the room.” Instead, the Melloys took Cindy home and she started receiving services from Easterseals in Evansville, Indiana. The Melloys eventually moved to Indianapolis. When Cindy was five years old, Mary Lou visited every school corporation in Marion County trying to find the best school for Cindy. Mary Lou decided Washington Township would be the easiest school to "strong arm" into taking her daughter. Cindy attended school at Washington Township until she was 18. After leaving school, Cindy went to the Noble workshop. When a new executive director came in wanting to do away with the workshop, Mary Lou was ready to organize a parent protest. However, a day after attending a meeting with the director, she called the director to tell him to find Cindy a job. For the next 20 plus years, Cindy worked for a pharmaceutical company until her job was outsourced. “If something happened to Don or I, everybody that works with Cindy, my kids, my neighbors, everybody knows to go to this one spot and everything is in there,” explains Mary Lou of the death folder she maintains. Important documents such as birth certificate, power of attorney and trust fund papers are included in the folder. Mary Lou also discusses staffing issues, funding, and her parent advocacy work. She says, “I was very busy.” A few of her activities included planning Christmas parties, attending conferences, arranging speakers for meetings, and advising parents. - In 1998, Indiana’s “317 Commission” of consumers, advocates, and state officials published "A Comprehensive Plan for the Design of Services for People with Developmental Disabilities", addressing the need for services to support people with developmental disabilities in their homes and at work. An expose of abuse at New Castle State Developmental Center had provided the initial impetus for action. The "317 Plan" marked a significant step in Indiana's history of providing services to people with disabilities. - As a senior in high school in 1963, Diane Shah told her guidance counselor she dreamed of becoming a writer for Time or Newsweek. He discouraged her, saying that Time and Newsweek hired only men as writers. Her second choice was to become a sportswriter. He advised her to “go home and start thinking sensibly” about her future. Nevertheless, Shah studied journalism in college, working at the Indiana Daily Student and graduating from Indiana University in three and a half years, in 1967. After graduation, Shah began to look for a writing job. The editors she spoke with continually told her they couldn’t hire her because she was a woman. Ignoring her guidance counselor’s advice, she arranged an interview with the Washington bureau chief at Newsweek. She struck out, being told she not only didn’t have the experience to be a writer, but she also wasn’t qualified to be a reporter, researcher or part-time librarian. Her persistence led her to her first break, a job at Roll Call, covering Capitol Hill. After six weeks, she received a call from the National Observer, a weekly publication owned by Dow Jones. The publication hired Shah to be the sole writer for a weekly National Observer current events publication written for junior high students. She found the work dull, but she took the job in hopes that it might someday lead to a position with the National Observer itself. It took only two and a half months. She became the youngest staff writer and one of Dow Jones’s first female journalists. At the Observer, she covered national stories: trials, profiles of celebrities (including Washington Post Publisher Katharine Graham, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, baseball player Mickey Mantle and football player Joe Namath) and the 1972 Republican Convention. The Observer folded in 1977. Her next job, of all places, was as a writer at Newsweek magazine. In 1979, she became the magazine’s No. 2 sportswriter and one of the first women to enter a locker room. At Newsweek, she covered the 1980 Olympic Summer Games in Moscow — which the U.S. boycotted — and the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. She once wrote a cover story on Indiana native Larry Bird, and he reacted by telling other sportswriters, “If I ever see that girl again, I’ll spit in her face.” In 1981, Shah became the first female sports columnist for a daily paper in the U.S., at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. She covered Olympics, Super Bowls, World Series, NBA championships, Final Fours (including IU’s 1981 national championship), golf and tennis championships and boxing. When the Lakers beat the Celtics for the NBA championship in 1985, President Ronald Reagan invited the Lakers for a ceremony in the Rose Garden. Shah broke into the White House to get the story. She was the only reporter there. In 1987, Shah left her columnist job to pursue magazine and book writing. She published stories in The New York Times Magazine, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, GQ, ESPN The Magazine, Playboy, Sport, the Columbia Journalism Review and Esquire. Shah now writes books and has published four mystery novels, and she co-wrote the book Chief: My Life in the LAPD, which made the New York Times bestseller list. She published her most recent book, Relentless, about famed sports photographer Neil Leifer, in 2016.

- “Barb was born in 1962 and at that time, there was very little available for people who were multi-handicap,” states Margaret. In the early days, Margaret turned to Crossroads Rehabilitation Center for services for her daughter. After attending St. Mary’s Child Center and Noble up to the age of 11, Barb entered the public school system at the Cold Springs School with other children with disabilities. Margaret says, “She had a really good experience in that program. Then she aged out of it. She was 18 and I had no services for a year.” After a year, Barb went back to Noble and has been then ever since. Margaret discusses how Barb spends her day. She enjoys music therapy, riding a stationary bicycle, and going for walks at the mall or park. Margaret feels fortunate with the support her family has received from doctors, friends and neighbors over the years. She says, “My neighbors have been supportive. I said, I couldn’t move, I’d have to educate another whole neighborhood.” Today, Barb lives in a waiver home with two roommates. She does visit her parents often on weekends. Margaret also discusses different parent groups, person centered planning and Barb’s future. Margaret shares her concerns about services. She says, “I think there's still room to grow but we also need to make sure we don't lose the services we have now.”

- "He asked me if I wanted out. I said yeah, do what it takes to get me out." Jamie Beck shared her story about how she ended up living in a nursing home shortly after graduating from high school. She says her father's stage four cancer led to her placement there. After trying to make the best of a bad situation, Jamie spoke up and told her guardian she wanted out. Today Jamie lives in a home and works part-time in the community. She was interviewed in Indianapolis in 2016.

- When talking about services in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Margaret Blome says, “There was very little available for people with multi-handicaps.” Margaret did find a therapist at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis who worked with her daughter, Barb, on learning to crawl, how to drink from a straw and other basic skills. When Barb was kindergarten age, Margaret found it difficult to find educational opportunities for her daughter. At the St. Mary’s Child Center, Margaret was introduced to other mothers who had children with disabilities. They formed a support group that met twice a week for two years. Margaret says, “I think overall, I was pretty supported.” Her parents said they would back any decisions she would make. Over the years, Margaret’s neighbors have been supportive. She says, “I said I couldn’t move. I have to educate another whole neighborhood.”

- “He put me in the nursing home, and I didn’t like that very much,” explains Ruth Ann. When Ruth Ann’s grandmother passed away, her father was unable to care for Ruth Ann and placed her in a nursing home. Ruth Ann found it depressing. While attending the New Hope workshop, Ruth Ann started questioning a friend about what it was like to live in a group home. Ruth Ann decided to tell her caseworker she wanted to move to a group home, and her father agreed to the move. After living in the group home for a while, Ruth Ann was ready to try supported living. When she was told no because she needed too many supports, she contacted a lawyer to help her move out. Eventually, Ruth Ann moved into a home with two other roommates, with staffing 24 hours a day. She was interviewed in 2017.

- A member of the Fort Wayne neighborhood association where a new group home was going in telephoned Steve Hinkle. "'You know,' he said, 'just three houses down the road, there's a Cadillac that sits in a driveway.' And I said 'Well, I think that's really important because I've got a new van that's going be sitting there and I don't want it to be a sloppy neighborhood.'" Starting in 1976, Steve was instrumental in placing former residents of Fort Wayne State Developmental Center into some of Indiana's first group homes. Steve was President/CEO of Easter Seals Arc of Northeast Indiana for 34 years. - "I joke with everybody that I take a day, I sit at home with a two-liter bottle of Diet Pepsi and a huge box of tissues and I read all the essays,” recounts Donna about the Attitude Essay Contest. The contest encourages elementary and middle school students to write about their own attitudes or the attitudes of others. - “I came back on Monday and one of the clients had a broken limb and nobody knew how it had occurred,” explains Sue Beecher of a visit to Muscatatuck State Developmental Center. In 1998, Sue was working for Indiana Protection & Advocacy and was assigned to monitor Muscatatuck. She witnessed the care for residents became progressively worse. - "I fell through the cracks bad," describes Karen Ricci of her school experience in the '70s and '80s. - “The day for the kids was pretty packed.” Kim Davis recalls the 1970s, when school aged children with challenging behaviors stayed at the Developmental Training Center (Now the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community) in Bloomington during the week. Their day often consisted of speech therapy, small group activities, adaptive physical education. After school, they might have a recreation activity, go out into the community, or help fix dinner. The goal was to develop a home program with the school system and parents so each student could return to their home school. Kim says, “I think that the Institute over time has really become a place where families could come and get information and I think that's a huge thing.” She describes how Institute staff help families and school systems connect. She states, “I was being a cheerleader for the teachers who just needed to know you're doing the right thing. Or here's a little tweak that you can do.” Kim shares her thoughts on the controversial facilitated communication movement. The book “Movement Difference and Diversity” had an impact on how she provided support to individuals. Kim says, “I think sometimes we forget about the impact that disability has on the human being and we want them to respond in the way we want them to respond. But we forget they have a disability and it impacts them in many different ways and it's up to us, the people without the disability to figure that out and provide that support.“ Kim talks about the importance of recognizing behaviors as communication. It requires people learn to listen differently. She also discusses her work with circles of support with students. Kim shares many personal stories throughout her 2013 interview. She retired from her position as research associate at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community in 2012.

- When he arrived in South Bend in 1980, the field of rehabilitation in Indiana "was in desperate need of some rapid growth," recalls George Soper. George had moved from Iowa, where he completed a doctoral work in the area of rehabilitation. Having started as a physical therapist, the focus of George's career became hospital administration. He retired in 2011 as Senior Vice President and Chief Learning Officer for South Bend's Memorial Hospital & Health System. He worked for the hospital for 31 years. George had been hired to build up the rehabilitation unit at Memorial Hospital in 1980. He describes how the number of physical and occupational therapists has grown from two of each to 37 and 25 therapists, respectively. He developed one of the first rehabilitation engineering programs, creating seating for mobility purposes and other adaptive equipment. "We had people come in from literally all over the country to see what we were doing." He also started an innovative driver rehabilitation and training program for people with disabilities in the early 1980s. George discusses trends in rehabilitation such as the reduced length of hospital stays that led to expansion of outpatient services, how "lifestyle abuse" has led to needs for rehab services, and future training needs related to the growing aging population. George, who has twice won a Franklin Covey Community Service Award, also discusses the influence of Steven Covey's "Seven Habits" philosophy in his life and work. - “If you want to talk about a typical day for a student with a disability, you almost have to talk about what kind of disability to be honest,” explains Nancy Kalina. A former research associate at the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, Nancy worked at Bloomington North High School in Bloomington, Indiana as a work-study coordinator from 2000 to 2011 and helped with student transitions out of high school. She describes the certificate, diploma and honors tracks available to students. Nancy explains the peer-tutoring program. She says students may help with academics, assist with an in-school job or be a bridge builder within a class. Circles of support are another option schools have used to benefit students. In addition to transition coordinators, Nancy feels the school systems need someone who could educate parents starting in the 8th grade on the various components of transitioning from school to adult services. Teachers know about curriculum and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), but not necessarily how Vocational Rehabilitation Services work or the importance of the Medicaid Waiver. Nancy discusses her experiences with facilitated communication, a type of augmentative communication. She address some of the controversies surrounding the practice. She also shares thoughts on training needs for professionals entering the field of disabilities. Nancy was interviewed in 2013.

- "The biggest thing is the values that started with the Deinstitutionalization Project and went on through all of our projects about consumer advocacy, self-determination, empowerment to people with disabilities, language use... just totally different values about people with disabilities." Vicki (Victoria C.) Pappas arrived at the Developmental Training Center (D.T.C.) in Bloomington as a graduate student in 1974. The D.T.C. was the the original name of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IIDC). Vicki retired as director of the IIDC's Center for Planning and Policy Studies the year prior to this 2013 interview. Vicki discusses the history of the IIDC and significant activities involving government and other partners in the state of Indiana. She talks about her experience with the Deinstitutionalization Project directed by Mike Tracy in the early 1970s, the legacy of former Director Henry J. Schroeder, and the impact of important legislation in shaping the work of the IIDC, including passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its implementation in Indiana. She also discusses voting participation and access, developing the state disability plans with the Governor's Council for People with Disabilities, and the creation of the IIDC's Collaborative Work Lab for digitally assisted group decision making.

- "Now disability politics, you know, is not Republican or Democrats, it's really nonpartisan but you still have to be recognized as someone who's reliable and trustworthy," observes Jim Hammond in this 2013 interview. Working with legislators was part of his job as CEO of the Indiana Association of Rehabilitation Facilities (INARF). "INARF is the trade association for providers of services," he explains. It was a $1 billion industry in 2012, the year he retired. Jim discusses his 34 years with the membership organization, including its strong relationship with The Arc of Indiana, the envy of INARF's counterparts in other states. He describes the pool loan program, a tax exempt financing members created in 1992, and INARF's role in establishing unified standards for provider agencies and the adoption of an independent third party national accreditation program. He recalls founder Costa Miller, who was CEO until his death in 2004, and the "fierceness of his commitment." He discusses how funding for disability services has fared under various governors and their respective political parties. Other topics include Medicaid waivers and the growing importance of technology such as video monitoring and "smart home" features in residences for people with disabilities.

- "Dickerson, I finally get it," a fiscally conservative State Senator from Hendricks County remarked. "He said, 'I'm on the board of directors of the bank and we hired this fellow with a disability. I don't even know what his disability is, but he's one of our best damn employees.'" As executive director of The Arc of Indiana, John Dickerson worked with legislators for decades to "fight on behalf of parents of individuals with disabilities to make the systems responsive." John recounts the evolution of what became the second largest Arc in the country in his 2013 interview. The group emerged out of the national movement by parents who had offspring with intellectual disabilities and wanted to band together to improve the lives of their children. The organization was known as the Indiana Association for Retarded Children when it was founded in 1956. John discusses the changing names of the association as a reflection of changes in language about people with disabilities, as well as The Arc's close relationship with self-advocates. John talks about the organization's influence on public policy. "The Arc isn't particularly well known in the general public. But we're remarkably well known with policymakers and legislators." He discusses The Arc's effort to get information to families about benefits and services, an initiative to support small businesses owned by people with developmental disabilities, and The Arc Master Trust. The latter is a mechanism enabling families to leave money to benefit their son or daughter with a disability. John considers the leadership role Indiana has played in the disability arena nationally, despite its relatively low profile. He reminisces about the late Elbert Johns, who was a long-time executive director of Stone Belt Arc in Bloomington. John Dickerson retired as Executive Director of The Arc of Indiana in 2015.

- "When I started in 1977, when people were admitted they brought with them what was called their death bag." The bag contained the clothing that residents of New Castle State Hospital were to be buried in. Sue Beecher recalls her employment at the institution in New Castle, Indiana for people with seizure disorders. Sue went on to work for Indiana's newly established Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services (BDDS) and Indiana Protection & Advocacy (IPAS), where she retired prior to this 2013 interview. (IPAS has since changed its name to Indiana Disability Rights.) Sue talks about the New Castle procedures that patients underwent without consent, and the restraints and aversive measures that were used to control their behaviors. Years later, as an IPAS representative on Muscatatuck State Developmental Center's Human Rights Committee, she again witnessed violations of residents' rights. It was the late 1990s, prior to Muscatatuck's closure. "You cannot walk onto a unit and see visible injuries on 12 or 14 people that weren't there the week before and not suspect something is terribly wrong there. And these folks were non-verbal, so they're not going to be able to tell." As IPAS' work expanded via federal grants, Sue was instrumental in getting the traumatic brain injury and PABSS (Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security) programs up and running. She relates her satisfaction in those accomplishments and her pride in this independent state agency charged with protecting the rights of Hoosiers with disabilities. "In Indiana, we've gone ahead and sued when we needed to, we've never backed down." In 2011, Sue received the Terry Whiteman Award for her work at IPAS. Sue also discusses the development of group homes and the intensive effort to open new group homes between 1989 and 1991 while she directed the Indianapolis BDDS office.

- The first Special Olympics games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago in 1968. Athletes from the United States, Canada and France participated in the games. In 1969, a group of volunteers organized the first Special Olympics Indiana games in Indianapolis. Mike Furnish, President and CEO of Special Olympics Indiana since 2007, started his involvement with Special Olympics in 1973 as a volunteer basketball coach. Mike will retire from Special Olympics Indiana in December, 2017. He was interviewed in 2013. Globally, Special Olympics offers at least 40 different sports. “The whole premise is that no two people are alike in their interests or abilities,” explains Mike. Special Olympics does not have an off-season. In addition to the summer games held on the campus of Indiana State, there is an annual winter games with downhill skiing, ice skating and snowboarding. Special Olympics Indiana has a small staff that coordinate the events, but as Mike explains, “One thing that characterizes our organization today is that we really are an organization of volunteers.” As there have been paradigm shifts in services, Special Olympics has changed over time. In 1988, Indiana was one of the first states to pilot test the Unified Sports program. The program brings together people with and without disabilities to train and compete against other unified sports teams. Mike says, “It was timely in the sense that that had paralleled what was taking place in schools as kids were moving away from special education settings into broader, more general settings.” Mike describes how Special Olympics Indiana has been a forerunner in the Special Olympics movement. Indiana introduced ballroom dancing and flag football as Special Olympic sports. In the late 1990s, the Athlete Leadership program was developed. A few of the program’s topics include public speaking skills, participation on committees, coaching techniques, and rules for officiating. Looking toward the future, Mike discusses the need for Special Olympics Indiana to promote healthier lifestyles. Mike says, “We find when we have done health screenings at our events, that 7 out of 10 of our athletes have an acute medical problem on the day they're there.” Special Olympics Indiana is reaching out to the medical community; providing healthy living training to athletes and volunteers; and targeting children age 2 to 7 with a program called Young Athletes. Mike explains, “It’s great stuff for sports, but it's great stuff for life when a person at that age begins to learn how to maintain their balance and do some of the basic things that sometimes just are ignored because people think they can't.”

- “I wish I had recorded all the stories that we heard during those interviews,” stated Bettye Dunham on interviewing Muscatatuck State Hospital and Training Center residents for jobs at the Jennings Training Center in the 1970s. She talked to residents about life at the institution, their work experience, and what dreams they had for the future. Bettye found the residents wanted to work because they wanted to contribute to their own well-being and it gave them something meaningful to do. - "In every state and territory in the country there is what is called P & A, which is short for Protection and Advocacy System. So every state is required to have a designated agency that serves as the state's P&A, who is there to protect and advocate specifically for people with disabilities." Dawn Adams, Executive Director of Indiana Disability Rights, was interviewed in 2016. Indiana Disability Rights is the service arm of the Indiana Protection & Advocacy Services (IPAS) Commission. She describes the work of the independent state agency that does not answer to the Governor's office, although the Governor appoints four out of 13 members of the Commission.

- "She kept finding out that blind students were attending regular public schools in all of the surrounding states and she couldn't figure out why weren't doing that in Indiana," recalls Byron Smith of his mother. Having recently lost his vision due to due to congenital glaucoma, seven-year-old "Bikey" entered the Indiana State School for the Blind in 1951. Five years later, and after intensive advocacy on the part of his parents and community members, he returned to his home town of Bloomington to attend Rogers Elementary School. In this 2013 interview excerpt, Byron Smith describes how he became the first pupil to be transferred from the state school to a public elementary school. He also talks about the essential tutoring assistance he received from Indiana University's Delta Gamma sorority as both a high school and college student.

- "That's only for regular people, not for us kind of people." That’s what Darcus Nims says she was told when she wanted to take a typing class in school. Darcus founded Self-Advocates of Indiana, the statewide group of advocates with intellectual/developmental disabilities, in 1990. She was interviewed in 2006, two years before her death at the age of 50. With numerous anecdotes, she discusses her achievements, the discrimination she experienced as a person with an intellectual disability, and how she fought to make things better for her fellow self-advocates. Growing up in Indianapolis, Darcus faced low expectations from the educational system. Told she needed to leave school at the age of 18, she was sent to sheltered workshops at Goodwill Industries, CrossRoads Industrial Services, and Noble Industries. Darcus wanted a job. “Nobody never asked me what I wanted to do if I wanted to go to the workshop.” For her niece with a disability, she says it is a lot better and yet many inequities remain. Darcus was proud of her influence on her niece who is now speaking up for herself. In 1991, Darcus traveled to Washington D.C. to receive the national Victorian Award for Achievement from President George H.W. Bush, for overcoming overwhelming challenges in her life. She had lunch at the White House and it was "the first time I ever got to stay in a hotel, the first time I ever got to go to a fancy restaurant." Some years later she had another first, flying to D.C. for a conference with self-advocate Betty Williams. “This time, we didn't have no helpers. We didn't think we could do it ourselves and we thought -- we were shocked we did it.”

- “To be part of that and to watch the leadership and those agencies catch fire…" Connie Ferrell recalls the excitement of introducing supported employment to Indiana in the early 1990s. "At the time they were doing it, it was like heresy. And they had parents up against them and everybody else up against them. And yet they were on fire. They couldn't not do it at that point.” When interviewed in 2015, Connie was an Indiana resident working for Virginia Commonwealth University and a consultant on topics such as supported employment and benefits counseling. She recalls her early involvement in supported employment as it took hold in other states, with federal monies becoming available to implement change at the state level. These systems change grants encouraged movement away from segregated, congregated employment to integrated, community employment, "the concept of providing individual supports on the job site, not requiring people to be job ready before going to work." She moved to Indiana in 1992 when she was hired as a field coordinator for the new Indiana Employment Initiative implementing Indiana's systems change grant. She describes providing technical assistance to agencies in the southern part of the state that were moving clients out of sheltered workshops, supporting them to be competitively employed. From the vantage point of 2015, Connie sees stagnation in employment in Indiana as well as other states. "I haven't really seen progression in supported employment since the 90s." "I think one of the things that's so disappointing to me about Indiana's plateau or stagnation is that the 90s was an incredible decade for Indiana. We were way ahead. We got into the game late and surpassed many other states and agencies in terms of movement in the direction of community inclusion and supported employment." She discusses the move from hourly billing to "results-based funding" in Indiana, and the growth in day activity programs instead of employment. Connie talks about the importance of work incentives and getting information to people receiving public benefits. They need to know it's an "urban myth that if you go to work and earn over about $700 or $1,000 you're going to lose your Social Security, or you have stay under $85 if you're on SSI, or if you go to work you're going to lose your Medicaid and Medicare." She sees Indiana as a leader in the previous decade because the state vocational rehabilitation agency funded a network of benefits information specialists. Other topics include person centered practices, fostered here with the help of trainings by Beth Mount and John O'Brien. Connie also reminisces about her former colleague Steve Savage and his contributions. Steve was executive director of the Arc of Greater Boone County and died a few months before this interview.

- The IU Libraries have a long history of delivering access to digital musical scores beginning with the Variations project in 1997. In 2014, the IU and IUPUI Libraries began work on a collaborative project to develop a new page turning application built upon the Hydra/Fedora open source software. In 2017, a new musical scores service is being launched to replace the retired Variations software. The IU Libraries adapted the Plum software, developed by the Princeton University Libraries, into Pumpkin, a Hydra Head to support digitization workflows for various paged media projects. In Bloomington, our first project will be Musical Scores. In Indianapolis, their first project will be newspapers. This software features tools to assist with importing digitized page images, ordering and numbering pages, adding bibliographic metadata, setting access controls, and making the digital object viewable within a customizable module called the Universal Viewer. The Universal Viewer is a front end for an International Image Interoperability Framework or IIIF or more commonly called ‰ÛÃtriple I F‰ÛÂ. This presentation will detail the software's functionality, the history of the development process, and the migration of Variations musical scores into this new system.

- The 2016 election cycle showed us how digital methods like image manipulation, social network analysis and data mining can change our perceptions of the world around us. This presentation will take these digital methods and demonstrate how applications to the arts & humanities can help us craft new research questions and answer those questions. We will discuss how to (or not to) apply mapping, data mining, network analysis, data visualization, 3D rendering, computationally aided vision and other digital methods to a variety of disciplines. We’ll also provide a clear list of IU resources that can support these efforts. Finally, we’ll engage in a practical white-board-based activity that doesn’t require digital tools to demonstrate how analog methods can enhance understanding of some of these digital-methods applications in a variety of environments (including the classroom). This presentation kicks off a series of workshops offered by the Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities called Choosing a Digital Method.

- Imago is a prototypic 'next-generation' digital repository that is dynamically linked to the collection management databases supported by a unique partnership between the IU Libraries and the Center for Biological Research Collections. Imago is the next stage in the metamorphosis of research data that are currently housed, in the form of physical collection objects, in the collections of the Indiana University Herbarium, the Indiana University Paleontology Collection, and the William R. Adams Zooarchaeology Lab. By taking advantage of dynamic cyberinfrastructure, high-throughput digitization workflows are enabled to build preservation-quality digital research products (3D scans, scanned 35 mm film, specimen photographs etc.), robust metadata integration, and robust linkages to propagate changes in taxonomy, georeferencing, or other augmentations to the existing metadata. Imago also greatly facilitates the discoverability of these collection objects and their metadata to the broader scientific and public community by providing a versatile framework that readily interacts with the API of large-scale biodiversity data aggregators, online curated galleries of images and 3D objects, and citizen-science platforms.

- A previously unknown collection of over 25,000 black and white architectural photographs were discovered in a dilapidated house owned by the Indiana Limestone Company in Bedford, Indiana. These images of residences, churches, universities, museums, businesses, and public and municipal buildings, many of which were designed by prominent architects, document the use of Indiana limestone throughout the United States from the late 1800s to mid-1900s. Remarkably holistic in scope, these photographs and their accompanying metadata can be studied across major disciplines such as American history, architectural history, history of technology, urban studies, history of photography, historic preservation, labor history, and the history of geology. The Indiana Geological Survey in partnership with the Indiana University Libraries has been cataloging, digitizing, archiving, and publishing online a growing subset of the photographs through the Libraries' Image Collection Online portal. Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Indiana State Library, we will be able to process an additional 4,500 photographs, and add approximately 3,000 images to the existing online collection, Building a Nation: Indiana Limestone Photograph Collection. Join us as we unravel the story behind the collection's discovery and our plans for ongoing curation and digitization.

- The Avalon Media System is an open source system for managing and providing access to large collections of digital audio and video. The project is led by the libraries of Indiana University Bloomington and Northwestern University and is funded in part by a two-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Avalon is in the process of migrating digital repositories from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4 and incorporating metadata statements using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) instead of XML files accompanying the digital objects in the repository. Julie Hardesty at Indiana University and Jen Young at Northwestern University, the metadata portion of the Avalon project team, are working on a plan to migrate descriptive metadata from MODS XML to RDF. This talk will cover the planning process to date and how this step with Avalon informs a similar migration process of IU's digital library collections from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4.

- Until recently, the Variations Digital Music Library provided online access to approximately 30,000 selected recordings and scores from the Indiana University Cook Music Library. First implemented in 1996 with support from IBM and later revised thanks to grants from the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, it served the students and faculty of the Jacobs School of Music until its retirement in January of 2017, prompted by the end of life of one piece of its underlying technology. The recordings hosted in Variations have been migrated to Media Collections Online in 2016. Variations addressed real teaching and learning needs beyond the basic features of discovery and access; migrating the Variations materials to a different tool is only one aspect of the change that this transition represents to Variations users and support staff. Other important aspects to consider are gaps in functionality. Some new features have been implemented in Avalon, the system powering MCO, to address some of the gaps. In this talk we will discuss the transition, the features added to Avalon prompted by the Variations use cases, the remaining functionality gaps we intend to address, and how MCO is being received by faculty and students.

- Indiana University Bloomington’s digital library collections are moving repository versions from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4. This move means switching from using XML files for descriptive, technical, and structural metadata to using RDF statements defining those same descriptive, technical, and structural metadata properties. This talk will cover the analysis work so far to understand our collection models in Fedora 3 and identify patterns we might use for this metadata migration. Additionally, migration work to Fedora 4 is occurring for systems that have been external to the Fedora repository and those results will also inform metadata migration planning from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4. - Recently the Association for Psychological Science revised its publication guidelines to reward Open Science practices and to encourage the use of the “New Statistics” as a better alternative to null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). Other journals and professional societies seem to be moving in the same direction, often in collaboration with funding agencies. This workshop will provide a practical introduction to the New Statistics and some emerging Open Science practices. We will worth through examples from several common research designs. - The Kentucky Research Data Center (KRDC) is a collaboration between the University of Kentucky and the U.S. Census Bureau established by a grant from the National Science Foundation in 2016. KRDC is part of the nationwide system of Federal Statistical Research Data Centers whose mission is to expand the data infrastructure available to qualified scholars and students with approved projects by providing access to restricted individual- and firm-level data from participating federal statistical agencies. - Recently the IU Libraries has seen major progress in managing born digital materials within some of the special collections units. The Born Digital Preservation Lab, established in January 2016, has been developing workflows to image and preserve obsolete media. The University Archives has been a strong partner in establishing end-to-end management of born digital materials, as they have revised accessioning and processing workflows, collaborated with the BDPL on pre-ingest, and have begun working on issues like backlog processing, providing access to researchers, and working with record creators to establish optimal acquisition of digital records. This presentation will discuss how the BDPL and University Archives have been working on these larger challenges. We will also highlight a few current projects, including a collaboration between the BDPL and Media Services to image and provide access to a collection of obsolete PC games.

- The Indiana University Archives has been capturing the web content created by IU Bloomington offices for over a decade. We began by running trial crawls in late 2005, and in 2006 fully committed to the project. Archive-It, a service of the Internet Archive, allows us to harvest and build collections of web sites and other digital content. This summer, we expanded our scope to include the social media content of offices across campus. The IU Bloomington social media index identifies nearly 500 accounts across various platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Vimeo. While some accounts are more active than others, valuable content is continuously created and shared. This presentation will provide an overview of the social media collection, highlight some of the technical challenges we faced, and discuss the value the collection brings to the overall holdings of the University Archives.
