Data mining encompasses a several different approaches to exploring large swaths of information, from the open largely unstructured text of the novel to the structured world of social-network entries to the automated comparison of photographs on a pixel-by-pixel basis. We'll use your research question or object as the entry point to make sense of the world of data mining and send you home with an activity you can adapt and use to introduce your students to data mining in your discipline.

From installations overlaid on the world around us to reprints of otherwise inaccessible archaeological finds that we can handle at will, digital objects help us interact with and understand the world differently. This workshop will walk through a wide variety of digital-making methods, from the 3D scanning of real world objects to laser cut mixed-media structures, and offer a clear view of the analog skills that underpin these digital approaches. We'll use your research question or object as the entry point to make sense of the world of digital making and rendering, and we’ll also send you home with an activity that will help you bring digital making into your classroom.

Digital mapping offers a variety of options that range in complexity from dropping a point on your smartphone’s mapping application to analyzing statistical differences in different geographies to warping geography for historical or artistic purposes. In addition to learning digital mapping methodology for humanist and social sciences research, and adapt mapping tools for artistic practice, we will discuss the critical application of these tools and how they can be used effectively in the classroom.

The 2016 election cycle showed us how digital methods like image manipulation, social network analysis and data mining can change our perceptions of the world around us. This presentation will take these digital methods and demonstrate how applications to the arts & humanities can help us craft new research questions and answer those questions. We will discuss how to (or not to) apply mapping, data mining, network analysis, data visualization, 3D rendering, computationally aided vision and other digital methods to a variety of disciplines. We’ll also provide a clear list of IU resources that can support these efforts. Finally, we’ll engage in a practical white-board-based activity that doesn’t require digital tools to demonstrate how analog methods can enhance understanding of some of these digital-methods applications in a variety of environments (including the classroom).

Marriage Equality Collection includes audio and video files, photographs, historical documents and ephemera representing experiences of same-sex couples married in the decade of legal marriage in the U.S. Particular focus is on the experience of couples in Indiana. This archive is growing in both content and scope.
“To be part of that and to watch the leadership and those agencies catch fire…" Connie Ferrell recalls the excitement of introducing supported employment to Indiana in the early 1990s. "At the time they were doing it, it was like heresy. And they had parents up against them and everybody else up against them. And yet they were on fire. They couldn't not do it at that point.”
When interviewed in 2015, Connie was an Indiana resident working for Virginia Commonwealth University and a consultant on topics such as supported employment and benefits counseling. She recalls her early involvement in supported employment as it took hold in other states, with federal monies becoming available to implement change at the state level. These systems change grants encouraged movement away from segregated, congregated employment to integrated, community employment, "the concept of providing individual supports on the job site, not requiring people to be job ready before going to work."
She moved to Indiana in 1992 when she was hired as a field coordinator for the new Indiana Employment Initiative implementing Indiana's systems change grant. She describes providing technical assistance to agencies in the southern part of the state that were moving clients out of sheltered workshops, supporting them to be competitively employed.
From the vantage point of 2015, Connie sees stagnation in employment in Indiana as well as other states. "I haven't really seen progression in supported employment since the 90s." "I think one of the things that's so disappointing to me about Indiana's plateau or stagnation is that the 90s was an incredible decade for Indiana. We were way ahead. We got into the game late and surpassed many other states and agencies in terms of movement in the direction of community inclusion and supported employment." She discusses the move from hourly billing to "results-based funding" in Indiana, and the growth in day activity programs instead of employment.
Connie talks about the importance of work incentives and getting information to people receiving public benefits. They need to know it's an "urban myth that if you go to work and earn over about $700 or $1,000 you're going to lose your Social Security, or you have stay under $85 if you're on SSI, or if you go to work you're going to lose your Medicaid and Medicare." She sees Indiana as a leader in the previous decade because the state vocational rehabilitation agency funded a network of benefits information specialists.
Other topics include person centered practices, fostered here with the help of trainings by Beth Mount and John O'Brien. Connie also reminisces about her former colleague Steve Savage and his contributions. Steve was executive director of the Arc of Greater Boone County and died a few months before this interview.
"Customers come up to me and they'll talk to me like they've known me for years." Cori Mitchell loves her job at a movie theater. As a high school senior in Colorado she was left with a head injury from an automobile accident. Soon after, in 1989, she moved to Indiana. Cori was interviewed in 2013. She discusses the support she's received from her family, from Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and from her employer.
“I get the benefits of free movies. So it's a good all-around job,” explains Cori of her job at the movie theater. Cori works part-time taking tickets. When Cori was interviewed in 2013, she had been working at the movie theater for the past 13 years.
In 1988 while living in Colorado, Cori was in a car accident and sustained a head injury. Where Cori lived, services were limited. Her parents decided to move to Bloomington, Indiana to be closer to Cori’s sister and there would be more services available to Cori.
Cori discusses how her life changed after her accident. She says, “It's really hard because brain injury, as you well know, has memory as the main problem.” Cori describes the accommodations her employer has made for her including writing down reminders on the movie schedule at her station. At home, Cori has her memory book to help organize her days.
In addition to her love of movies, Cori enjoys exercising. “I have to keep my lungs and diaphragm exercised because it really, really affects my speech,” explains Cori. Some days she combines movies with exercising by putting on movie while she rides her NordicTrack at home. “It just revitalizes me and I feel good the rest of day,” states Cori. In her spare time, Cori likes to spend time with her family and painting. She has also been active with various advocacy groups.
Aurelian Craiutu is a champion of moderation in an era of extreme politics. The political scientist argues that moderation is a virtue for all seasons, but that it's urgently needed in times of polarization. In episode 44, Craiutu discusses his new book, "Faces of Moderation: The Art of Balance in an Age of Extremes," which pushes back against the idea that moderation is a weak virtue or a philosophy for people who lack conviction.
Making is a deeply cultural and historical practice that often lives at the intersection where science meets the arts and humanities. As a portal to practicing various ways of knowing, inquiring, creating and relating, making is increasingly shaping educational spaces, both inside and outside of the classroom. Yet efforts to expand access to “makerspaces” often treat making as a normative or ahistorical practice, and tend to reproduce individualistic and economic narratives with regard to the purposes of making. In this talk, Vossoughi offers a critical framework for design, practice, and research on making in educational spaces. This framework draws from cultural-historical theories of learning, literature on educational equity and justice, and Vossoughi’s long-term ethnographic research on afterschool tinkering programs that merve students in non-dominant communities. More specifically, Vossoughi argues that a framework for equity in making ought to include: a) critical analyses of educational injustice; b) historicized approaches to making as cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary activity; c) explicit attention to pedagogical philosophies and practices; and d) ongoing inquiry into the sociopolitical values and purposes of making. Offering examples of each of these principles, Vossoughi considers the specific theoretical and pedagogical sensibilities that animate transformative visions for educational equity.
"That's only for regular people, not for us kind of people." That’s what Darcus Nims says she was told when she wanted to take a typing class in school. Darcus founded Self-Advocates of Indiana, the statewide group of advocates with intellectual/developmental disabilities, in 1990. She was interviewed in 2006, two years before her death at the age of 50. With numerous anecdotes, she discusses her achievements, the discrimination she experienced as a person with an intellectual disability, and how she fought to make things better for her fellow self-advocates.
Growing up in Indianapolis, Darcus faced low expectations from the educational system. Told she needed to leave school at the age of 18, she was sent to sheltered workshops at Goodwill Industries, CrossRoads Industrial Services, and Noble Industries. Darcus wanted a job. “Nobody never asked me what I wanted to do if I wanted to go to the workshop.” For her niece with a disability, she says it is a lot better and yet many inequities remain. Darcus was proud of her influence on her niece who is now speaking up for herself.
In 1991, Darcus traveled to Washington D.C. to receive the national Victorian Award for Achievement from President George H.W. Bush, for overcoming overwhelming challenges in her life. She had lunch at the White House and it was "the first time I ever got to stay in a hotel, the first time I ever got to go to a fancy restaurant." Some years later she had another first, flying to D.C. for a conference with self-advocate Betty Williams. “This time, we didn't have no helpers. We didn't think we could do it ourselves and we thought -- we were shocked we did it.”
Our information technology (IT) infrastructure is not perfect and data can be corrupted by means both malicious and random. This talk covers some of the issues with IT infrastructure that lets data corruption creep in and NSF-funded work by the authors to augment a popular workflow management system (Pegasus) to provide increased scientific data assurances.
"In every state and territory in the country there is what is called P & A, which is short for Protection and Advocacy System. So every state is required to have a designated agency that serves as the state's P&A, who is there to protect and advocate specifically for people with disabilities." Dawn Adams, Executive Director of Indiana Disability Rights, was interviewed in 2016. Indiana Disability Rights is the service arm of the Indiana Protection & Advocacy Services (IPAS) Commission. She describes the work of the independent state agency that does not answer to the Governor's office, although the Governor appoints four out of 13 members of the Commission.
"You don't train people to get ready to go out in the community; you take a risk and let them go and see where their strengths are." From 1973 through 1976, the Deinstitututionalization Project gave residents at Muscatatuck State Developmental Center an opportunity to live in a community setting in Bloomington, Indiana and explore social and work activities. Vicki Pappas and Patrick Sandy were Indiana University students who were involved in the project and share some of their experiences in this video.
As a senior in high school in 1963, Diane Shah told her guidance counselor she dreamed of becoming a writer for Time or Newsweek.
He discouraged her, saying that Time and Newsweek hired only men as writers. Her second choice was to become a sportswriter. He advised her to “go home and start thinking sensibly” about her future.
Nevertheless, Shah studied journalism in college, working at the Indiana Daily Student and graduating from Indiana University in three and a half years, in 1967.
After graduation, Shah began to look for a writing job. The editors she spoke with continually told her they couldn’t hire her because she was a woman.
Ignoring her guidance counselor’s advice, she arranged an interview with the Washington bureau chief at Newsweek. She struck out, being told she not only didn’t have the experience to be a writer, but she also wasn’t qualified to be a reporter, researcher or part-time librarian.
Her persistence led her to her first break, a job at Roll Call, covering Capitol Hill. After six weeks, she received a call from the National Observer, a weekly publication owned by Dow Jones. The publication hired Shah to be the sole writer for a weekly National Observer current events publication written for junior high students. She found the work dull, but she took the job in hopes that it might someday lead to a position with the National Observer itself.
It took only two and a half months. She became the youngest staff writer and one of Dow Jones’s first female journalists.
At the Observer, she covered national stories: trials, profiles of celebrities (including Washington Post Publisher Katharine Graham, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, baseball player Mickey Mantle and football player Joe Namath) and the 1972 Republican Convention.
The Observer folded in 1977. Her next job, of all places, was as a writer at Newsweek magazine. In 1979, she became the magazine’s No. 2 sportswriter and one of the first women to enter a locker room.
At Newsweek, she covered the 1980 Olympic Summer Games in Moscow — which the U.S. boycotted — and the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. She once wrote a cover story on Indiana native Larry Bird, and he reacted by telling other sportswriters, “If I ever see that girl again, I’ll spit in her face.”
In 1981, Shah became the first female sports columnist for a daily paper in the U.S., at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. She covered Olympics, Super Bowls, World Series, NBA championships, Final Fours (including IU’s 1981 national championship), golf and tennis championships and boxing. When the Lakers beat the Celtics for the NBA championship in 1985, President Ronald Reagan invited the Lakers for a ceremony in the Rose Garden. Shah broke into the White House to get the story. She was the only reporter there.
In 1987, Shah left her columnist job to pursue magazine and book writing. She published stories in The New York Times Magazine, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, GQ, ESPN The Magazine, Playboy, Sport, the Columbia Journalism Review and Esquire.
Shah now writes books and has published four mystery novels, and she co-wrote the book Chief: My Life in the LAPD, which made the New York Times bestseller list. She published her most recent book, Relentless, about famed sports photographer Neil Leifer, in 2016.
