David Baker’s Concert Piece was commissioned by Lenore Hatfield and The Camerata for M. Dee Stewart. Conducted by Keith Brown, it was premiered with that orchestra in 1997. It is a major three movement concerto with strings “informed by jazz” as Baker said. Since the piece begins muted, Stewart chose to use a SoloTone mute ala Tommy Dorsey.
