As the 19th Century progressed and the spirit of nationalism increased, this new emotion began to affect music as much as other activities. Here Professor Woodworth shows the effect of this spirit on the music of four composers: Dvorak, Mahler, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius. While they adhered to the standard forms of musical construction, they drew their thematic materials from sources such as folk songs and religious music to give their compositions a specifically national flavor.
America’s task is to stop imperialism. Communism is based on imperialism. What can we do? If we ally ourselves against Soviet imperialism we run into difficulty because of Nationalism and Colonialism. For instance, Portugal is our ally but a Portuguese colony in India wants to be our independent ally. Where is our loyalty? When faced with a choice such as this, our loyalty must remain with the countries which will protect the most people from aggression. And these problems are intensified because of atomic power. If we share it, will it alienate us from other powers? There is always the danger that if we give to nationalist nations, we cannot be sure that it will be used for peace. The basic problem lies in the fact that Soviet imperialism is ambiguous. What policy can we accept?

This program summarizes the major points which have been brought out in the series and evaluates Nationalism and Colonialism in terms of the basic problems now facing the world community – the paradox that he liberal idea of self-determination of nations may result in divisiveness and fragmentation of the world’s energies and resources at the very time when man’s power to unleash the forces of nature has made necessary the highest degree of international harmony and worldwide cooperation. How has the world community organized to deal with National-Colonial power? What is the future of Nationalism and Colonialism? These are the questions answered by Stoessinger in this program. Visits Eskimos in the North and Indians in the South and discusses some of the problems confronting these native Alaskans since the appearance of the white man. Tells how native Indians are assimilating with the white settlers and the Eskimos are threatened with extinction through destruction of their hunting and fishing grounds.
Portrays life of a typical farm family during the early 1800s in the Northeastern United States. Illustrates the self-sufficiency of these farmers and the importance to them of wood, water, and fertile soil. The reliance of the people on the services of the grist mill, blacksmith shop, general store, church, and school is shown. Through scenes of church and town meetings illustrates the concept that traditions of self-sufficient independence, desire for education, devotion to God and church, and love of self-government and freedom held by these farmers were carried to all parts of the 19th century America.

William C. “Bill” Smith of Oregon Educational Broadcasting, who hosts and narrates this group of programs, takes youngsters on a day’s jaunt to an Oregon “egg factory,” a dairy farm and a dairy manufacturing plant to show them that, though milk, butter and eggs still come from the same old reliable sources, the ways which they are processed have changed considerably. On a farm where 100,000 laying hens produce enough eggs in one day to feed cities the size of Schenectady; New York; St. Joseph, MO; and Kalamazoo, Michigan, we see how eggs are gathered, cleaned and graded, and sent to market. On the dairy farms we see modern milking methods and milk being transported to a manufacturing plant. Processes involved in bottling milk and making cheese are seen, and the ice cream bar section is visited.

A man in a suit steps out of a Plymouth car while he's parked next to a ranch-style house. He starts talking about the great features of the car and its solid build when a copy of him walks on screen and argues with the original version talking. His double says that the car is the perfect performance car and they both go back and forth over the unique features and build of the car. The original opens the door for the double who takes a seat in the car. They both say in unison to camera it is Chrysler engineered.

In this program the new developments in American music are introduced through a study of Roy Harris' Symphony Number 3. Professor Woodworth interprets this music in terms of a growing American nationalism which express such American problems as the will to succeed, the desire for spiritual assurance, and the materialistic conflict in musical terms. Harris’ rejection of the techniques of Stravinsky, and his return to Baroque musical forms influences all of his music, and particularly this Symphony. Professor Woodworth plays recorded portions of this work to demonstrate some of the unique characteristics of this form of American music.

Moving deeply into the German romanticism of the 19th Century, the symphony grew as composers experimented with new methods of orchestration, and an increased expression of feeling and mood. Professor Woodworth illustrates this change as he plays recordings of Schubert's Symphony Number 7, and Mendelssohn's Symphony Number 35. The need to express intense subjectivity in music lead to structural changes in the composition of Mendelssohn's symphonies. This need is one of the key characteristics of German romantic music.

A Teaching Film Custodians film about the presentation and conventions of live theatre at Shakespeare's Globe Theater circa 1600. Incorporating footage from the prologue of the 1944 British Technicolor feature film, "Henry V", directed by and starring Laurence Olivier, and graphics, this film illustrates the location, and appearance of the Globe and Rose theaters, the activity before a typical presentation, where the audience was seated, and the manner in which the Globe Theater was used. We see the audience entering the theater, gallants taking their places on stage, the orange girl and cider man hawking their wares, and the actors preparing for their entrance. Concludes with the curtain parting and the chorus reciting the prologue.

Using mythological conceptions of the man-beast, Dr. O’Doherty traces the artistic conception of the animal and the combination of animal and man from ancient Greece to the Orient. He discusses the blind and terrible energy of the animal and points out man’s concept of the animal’s development from God through man to the animal itself.
The basic unit of life –the cell –could not be studied in detail until recently. The electron microscope first enabled man actually to see its delicate construction. This program deals with a detailed description of the structure of a cell, and an analysis of the role each part plays in maintaining life. Dr. Saltman shows films of cells dividing, and photographs taken under the strong magnification of an electron microscope.
This program is a summation of the first development of the symphony as conceived by Haydn, Mozart and the early Beethoven. The examples used to show this development include the Minuet and Trio of Mozart's 39th Symphony, and the finales of Haydn's Symphony Number 102, Mozart's Symphony Number 41, and Beethoven's Symphony Number 1. Musical ideas and their development are explored in terms of a consistent classical pattern.
To begin a series on the symphony, states Professor Woodworth, one must start at the beginning, with the first movement of the piece. In the classical symphony, the first movement introduces all the musical elements which will be present throughout the four movements of the work. Using the first movement of Mozart's 34th Symphony as an example, Professor Woodworth explains the musical concepts of exposition, recapitulation and coda. He ends by remarking, "A symphony is a structure of sounds in motion in time. It conveys no specific ideas other than musical ideas."
Discusses present day attitudes toward colonialism and how they differ from the colonial ideal of the past. Sir Andrew Cohen, ex-colonial official in Africa, answers questions concerning the making of colonial policy, how the colonial mind has changed and what the modern colonial official sees as his function.
Stoessinger analyzes the modern colonial mind in a time when “Colonial Official” has become a bad word phrase. He interviews French and Belgian colonial officials in an attempt to show the changing role of the colonial official in the world today. The modern colonial official wants to set men free, to eliminate the color bar, and to serve as a civil servant, his guests claim.
Describes the life and work of a family living on a highly mechanized farm in the corn belt, and interrelates the problems of hog and cattle raising which provide a more profitable commondity than would the mere selling of the corn itself. Animated maps are usd to llocate the corn growing regions of the United States. Types of equipment and techniques employed to increae per-acre yield throughout the growing and harvesting seasons are enumerated. Emphasizes that most corn farmers are also livestock raisers.
Professor Woodworth uses this program to introduce some general principles of musical composition, illustrating his remarks by examples from Haydn's Symphony Number 102. He explains how musical ideas are developed, how they are used and recognized in composition, and how they can be transformed and manipulated within the structure of the movement. Diagrams, and rear-screen projections of the score are used in this program.

The energy expended in thinking or talking or moving or simply living must be supplied by fuel; this program outlines the kinds of fuel which a living being needs, and describes how this fuel is used by the cells, and how it is stored for future use. The function of adenosine triphosphate, an essential chemical compound in the metabolism of life, is explained, and models illustrating its functions display clearly how the compound is formed and reacts within the cell.
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt hosts this program and discusses solutions to the Congo crisis with several guests including Adlai Stevenson, US Ambassador to the United Nation and G. Mennen Williams, Assistant Secretary of State for Affrican Affairs.
"The understanding of music consists in the responding to music in its own terms." This quotation from music critic Thomas Serret is the keynote not only to this program but also to the whole series. At this point, Professor Woodworth gives a careful and complete analysis of the first movement of Beethoven's Second Symphony. The separate parts of the movement --introduction, exposition, development, recapitulation and coda --are present in almost all first movements of almost all symphonies. Though the idioms or specific ideas may vary, this musical plan has survived for some two hundred years thanks to its symmetry, unity, variety and beauty, explains Professor Woodworth.
Illustrates, using animation and live-action photography, man's efforts to learn more about the structure of the earth through study of deep mine shafts, deep wells, volcanoes, and earthquakes. Describes early theories of the earth's structure and the present world-wide efforts to discover more about its structure. Points out means scientists use to study earthquakes, how this study contributes to an explanation of the structure of the earth's interior, and the use of explosion seismology to produce artificial earthquakes. The intense heat of the earth's interior is evidenced in volcanic eruptions, geysers, and bubbling mud. The plan for placing a seismograph on the moon and the "Mohole Project'' are briefly discussed.

The word hormone is derived from the Greek word hormone, meaning to excite or arouse. This is, briefly, the function of the hormone in the body –those chemical molecules produced in very small quantities within the body to stimulate and control key functions of growth, metabolism and reproduction. Using diagram and drawing, Dr. Saltman describes the ways in which these hormones are produced in the glands, how they are circulated through the blood stream, and what can happen is they do not perform their functions adequately.

In addition to organic elements, living beings are necessarily composed also of inorganic elements such as calcium, iron and cooper. This program analyzes the ways in which these inorganic substances behave, and what their function is in maintaining life. In this program, Stoessinger points out the continuity of imperialism from Czarist Russia to Russia today, Russia’s attitude toward nationalism being that it should be ruthlessly crushed. The Soviet’s techniques of empire building are several including playing nationalistic groups against each other and exploiting anti-fascist resistance to its own gain. In the past, nationalism has caused many blocks to Communism and they have constantly had to change their techniques. A former Albanian freedom fighter is interviewed.
Stoessinger suggest that the rise of the new nationalism may characterize this era more than the East-West struggle. He discusses the two trends today; new nations and new unified supra-states, and discusses the main unifying factors common to the rise of new nationalistic states. These include neutralism, the quest for racial equality, religion as a unifying or dividing factor, the planned socialistic economy, and Westernization in its various manifestations. How can democracy export its ideas and ideals to countries that have little background and experience in democratic methods? This is the great problem of communication, concludes Stoessinger.

The Cambridge Festival Orchestra joins Professor Woodworth in a consideration of the romantic expansion of the orchestra. The brass choir in Beethoven's hands developed tremendously, and this was picked up and carried on by Mendelssohn, Brahms, Mahler and Tchaikovsky. Woodwinds and percussion instruments were also increasingly used to obtain special effects. Examples of this development are played, and at the end Professor Woodworth and the orchestra perform portions of two contrasting 20th Century Symphonies—Sibelius' Symphony Number 5 and Piston's Symphony Number 3—both of which used instrumentation to convey special moods.

Slums, wars, despair, are as valid subjects for poetry as are spring, love and joy, since the poet’s function, among other things, is to be a commentator on all phases of life, the three poets decide.

Born into the British nobility in 1788, George Gordon, Lord Byron, managed to crowd into the thirty-six years of his life enough travels, adventures, and romances to make him the most famous, and notorious, of the Romantic posts. After a formal education at Harrow and Cambridge, he traveled to Greece and the Near East, and from his experiences on this trip brought forth poems including “Maid of Athens,” “Childe Harold,” and many others. After an unhappy marriage, he was forced to leave England, and traveled on the Continent. It was during this period that he wrote his great epic satire “Don Juan,” of which the lovely lines about the isles of Greece form part. His sympathy for Greece led him to return there to help fight for independence against the Turks, and it was there that he died in 1824.

Is there a difference in attitude between the generations? As questions like these are discussed, Mr. Hartzell and Dr. Patrick uncover a vivid picture of one of the nation’s most pressing problems.
Dr. C. Arthur Knight, featured on this program, introduces his topic with a brief description of properties which characterize living things, and then explains to what degree viruses do or do not have these properties. What is significant, he points out, is that viruses are like other living things to the extent that they are capable of reproducing themselves. Because viruses have a chemical content, similar to that of chromosomes — the cells which determine heredity — and because they can be more easily isolated and fragmented than chromosomes, they are a source of much information for scientists who study life's creation and formation. In addition to his general points, Dr. Knight shows, through a remarkable series of micro-motion pictures, how mutations within viruses can be formed and identified.
