“American education is easy, lazy, and noisy.” With this statement four panelists, from India, Greece, Union of South Africa, and England, begin their discussion of American education. What are the aims of American education? Should education in a democracy be democratic education? How can a school system give students both a general introduction to culture and advanced technological training? Should everyone receive the same education? How are standards set for the schools and for the students? The debate centers around these topics and provides not only a new look at American high schools and colleges, but also at the educational systems of other countries.
Representatives of Japan, Iceland, United Kingdom and Denmark ask themselves, “Have Your Ideas Changed?” What has been learned, accepted, discarded by the panelists in the past three months? What value can be assigned to the Youth Forum project? How important was the strictly academic experience in their stay here? How can American and foreign schools be compared? What are some weaknesses of American schools? What effect does foreign language training have on students in various countries? What effect does the traveler abroad have on the people of the country he visits? What is the effect of an army of occupation, such as existed for a while in Japan? How can people learn more about each other?
Four students from the Middle East -Turkey, Israel, United Arab Republic, and Iran -discuss politics and policies in their home area in the following terms: What is the economic position of each country? Is there a Middle East “power vacuum”? Should smaller nations be forced to choose between the United States and Soviet Russia? What can these nations do to help themselves and each other? If aid, economic or military, is necessary, how should it be administered or distributed? Would an organization like the European Common Market work in the Middle East? Is the Middle East ready for the kind of unification Europe is thinking about?
Herald Tribune Youth Forum panelists discuss the relation between men and women in various parts of the world, as students from the Philippines, Japan, Finland, and Ceylon debate on: What has been the effect of “Americanization” on women in Asia, Africa, and Europe? Who should be the head of the family? Can polygamy be defended? What is the role of the wife? Might different kinds of family relationships be valid in different parts of the world? Fignewton Frog (puppet) and Dora (person) tell a story about a bat named Beatrice who buys a beautiful necklace but gets sick due to trying to sleep right-side-up so as to keep the necklace on. Gives basic information about bats and enforces the idea that sleep is important.
Breezes can move boats across water, lift kits to the sky and dry clothes. Dora tells a story, illustrated by shadow puppets of a little breeze called Blower who didn't want to play with his bigger rough friends. Instead, he sets out to make friends of his own, by drying clothes, taking a boy's kite into the air and by sailing some boats across a pond.
This is the story of a vain woodpecker who wanted to wear shoes. Dora and Fignewton talk about what woodpeckers eat and their habits are illustrated with shadow puppets.
Some animals adopt protective coloration for winter. By means of the peep-show parade, Dora tells the story of an elderly rabbit in the impoverished nobility who forgot that nature would take care of her "wardrobe."
If a worm loses part of its body in time that part will be replaced. Using make-do puppets, Dora tells the story of on worm's adventures. Viewers learn how to make a puppet worm from paper.
Fignewton Frog and Dora tell a tale of Mrs. Spider, who helps a hummingbird get a bridal veil. Using the peep-show parade and a series of miniature sets with moving figures, they tell of some of the unusual features of spiders.
Plants need sunlight, and this story tells what happened when sunbeam lost interest in his work. Dora Velleman tells the story and Fignewton Frog helps illustrate it at the felt boards.

This home movie contains material mainly from three visits the Gair family made in Australia to Mildura and the Murray Valley in the State of Victoria in 1940, and central Australia in 1950 and possibly 1957 to the State of South Australia and the Northern Territory, especially central Australia. It contains sequences of travel with a prominent Australian tour company, Bonds Tours, utilizing an elongated, rugged car for travel.
There is significant footage from Mt. Buffalo National Park in Victoria and Alice Springs and the West MacDonnell National Park in the Northern Territory. Notable locations within Mt. Buffalo National Park include wonderful shots of Pulpit Rock and Wilkinson’s Lookout, Lake Catani, the Leviathan, Manfield’s Lookout, Bent’s Lookout, and Reed’s Lookout. Shots in South Australia include Parachilna Gorge and the Flinders Ranges, with a stop at the Ancorichina Hostel nearby, as well as William Creek.
A wonderful sequence of camera tilts reveals the various Kodak posters for Mt. Buffalo National Park. In the Northern Territory locations include Alice Springs (known locally as “The Alice”), the Fink Gorge National Park and West MacDonnell National Park, and the Hermannsberg Lutheran mission, an Aboriginal mission in the Ljirapinta Ward of the MacDonnell Shire. A majority of the final segment includes many profile and group shots of Aboriginal people at a mission possibly sponsored by the “Australian Board of Missions, Church of England, Alice Springs,” which was printed on a nearby car. Footage consists of color film stock with particularly beautiful title cards inserted for many new locations and sites.
McRobbie-Gair Family Home Movies Collection: Following the European leg of their trip, the Gairs then sailed from Southampton to New York on the Queen Mary but there is no footage of this trip as Mr Gair had misplaced his movie camera and had to have it replaced in New York. This movie consists of travelogue sequences mainly of the Eastern United States and Canada, with footage from New York, Washington D.C., Virginia, Illinois, and New Mexico.
The film opens with shots of the New York City skyline and Times Square at night with an amazing light show of entertainment and advertising signage. The marquee of several historic movie theatres can be seen, including the Loew's State Theatre and the Strand Theatre, showing Only Angels Have Wings (1939) and Indianapolis Speedway (1939), respectively. Other notable footage includes a particularly engrossing segment of the 1939-40 New York World's Fair with excellent shots of many of the individual country exhibits at this event. There is also footage from George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, Chicago cityscapes, and wonderful footage of Niagara Falls.
Moving north to Canada the film captures shots from Montreal, Toronto, and Québec City. Notable sequences include shots of Montmorency Falls and Château Frontenac in Québec City. Finally, the film travels to the American Southwest of New Mexico, including the cities of Gallop and Albuquerque. The film captures in amazing detail an "Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial" in Gallop, according to a title card, which includes ritual dancing, games (including tug-of-war and foot and horse races), and a rodeo with broncos and bulls. Footage consists of a combination of color and black and white film stock with title cards inserted for new locations and cities.
Some of the habits and oddities of owls are brought out in this story of Mrs. Screech Owl, who felt her sight was failing and therefore bought a pair of glasses. Dora and Fignewton Frog tell the story by means of the peep-show parade and animated figures on small stage sets.
Rain does not always evaporate immediately after falling. Dora tells a story of some raindrops with the help of Mr. Robinson's illustrations of some raindrops who had a series of adventures on their way to a distant lake where they learned how to do the "dance of the happy spray."
McRobbie-Gair Family Home Movies Collection: This home movie contains mainly footage of a large military parade in Melbourne, Australia. It is most likely of an ANZAC day parade. ANZAC day is one of the major public holidays in Australia and is held annually on April 25. It commemorates the first landings of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli, Turkey, on April 25, 1915. The year of this particular parade is not yet clear though it is probably in the early 40s. But the footage of the event is particularly important as it features shots of numerous senior Australian politicians and military officers, including former Australian Prime Ministers, William Hughes and John Curtin. There is additional footage of other military parades and school sporting events very typical of the time.
Dr. Gould and Dr. Odishaw discuss the idea of the IGY. They trace the idea from the suggestions that was a Third International Polar Year (1882-83, 1932-33) through its expansion into the largest international scientific effort in the history of the world. They present general observations on the geographic and scientific “unknowns” in Antarctica and some of the larger questions to which the IGY hopes to find answers in its exploration of this continent.
Uses film sequences of the second Byrd expedition, 1933-34, and recent film footage to show how technological advances have improved the work of the scientist. Explains how Antarctica scientists face problems and make adjustments unknown elsewhere in the world. This is a fairy tale about a mischievous badger who plays tricks upon a friendly rabbit. We learn how he was taught a lesson and never again played pranks. Mr. Mikami illustrates this tale with brush painting of a rabbit and badger.
Mr. Mikami teaches the art of drawing a human figure using the Japanese equivalent of a “baby sitter” as an example. The figure he draws is a young Japanese girl carrying a small baby on her back. She carries a rattle in her hand to amuse the child and wears a long kimono, Japanese zori sandals, and delicate hair ornaments.
This is a legend about the sun goddess – on whom the world depends for light – who became angered and hid in a celestial cave and refused to shed her light on the world. A rooster’s crow, a fire and a big mirror were used to lure her from her cave. Mr. Mikami illustrates the story with a brush painting of a rooster.

In this program, criminologist Joseph D. Lohman explains that a major portion of the crime problem is a result of what society does about initial and relatively less serious crime. An interviewed inmate tells that he was less damaged by his prior criminal experience than by his prison experiences. Public sentiment has not kept pace with the progress of penological attitudes, say Lohman and Bates. This is a cause of prison experiences making an inmate more dangerous to the public. They emphasize that a prison must make offenders self-reliant, rather than dependent, and indicate methods by which this can be accomplished.
Shows the relationship of the Constitution to the issue of prior restraint on freedom of expression. Presents the case of Burstyn v. Wilson challenging the constitutionality of New York State's film censorship system and Cantwell v. Connecticut involving questions of freedom of speech and religion. In this program, criminologist Joseph D. Lohman outlines probation as a special alternative to the criminal-making influences of the prison system, stating that probation can effectively replace detention; although it is considered in the public mind as a form of leniency and improperly administered it becomes “beating the rap.” Two men with criminal experience are interviewed to illustrate this alternative. Meeker and Lohman delve into the necessary requirements to make probation an instrument for controlling criminal behavior and if its potentialities for reclaiming those who have strayed outside the social role are to be used to the fullest extent.
Highlights events in the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi between 1930 and 1948 and recounts his role in the struggle to free India from British colonialism. Treats his philosophy of passive resistance and non-violence, and depicts the conflicts between British and Indians, and Hindus and Moslems before and after British withdrawal. The events of the campaign of civil disobedience and the series of conferences and incarcerations of Gandhi are reviewed. The views of British officials during this period are also presented. The partition of India and the establishment of dominion status for India and Pakistan are explained. Gandhi's pleas for unity and brotherhood during his last days and his assassination in 1948 are presented. Concluding scenes present his funeral pyre and an eulogy to Gandhi.

Portrays the frequency of a mutant in the gene pool as reaching a state of equilibrium when, per generation, its origination by mutation equals its elimination by genetic death. Discusses genetic death and presents examples of how genetic loads are changed subsequent to radiation exposure. Reviews the contributions of Mendel, the Hertwigs, and Miescher to our understanding of modern genetics. Discusses chromosome chemistry in terms of the cytological distribution of nucleic acids, the chemical composition of chromosomes in groups of isolated nuclei and in single nuclei the chemical content of salivary chromosomes and their bands. Compares cell activity with the DNA and RNA content of various giant chromosomes in insect larvae which leads to the conclusion that gene action can occur by the disproportionate increase in the amount of DNA or RNA. Summary:
Demonstrates the three basic considerations in controlled photographic lighting--placement of lights, quality of light, and lighting ratio. Uses a mannequin as a model to show the functions of main, fill, background, and accent lights in addition to the effects achieved when the lights are moved to different angles. Generalizes this studio set-up to apply to lighting in television, outdoor pictures, and when using flashbulbs. The effects of diffuse floodlights and spots are illustrated, and the changes produced by varying the lighting ratio is seen.
Deals with the approximation that light travels in straight lines and shows four ways in which light can be sent--diffraction, scattering, refraction, and reflection. Diffraction is shown using point light sources, a wide screen, and a variable slit. Scattering is observed in a smoke-filled box. Refraction and reflection are shown using an optical tank and also an under-water camera to observe the appearance of several swimmers sitting alongside the pool; effects illustrated include image displacement, the critical angle, and total internal reflection. What happens when a rocket ship in space is struck and damaged by a meteor? Capt. Gell, a Navy expert on crew equipment, demonstrates the Navy’s full-pressure space suit for emergency escape from a shattered craft. Dr. Haber, an aerodynamic engineer who has made a thorough study of the theoretical problems of escape and survival far out in pace, explains the difficulty of making an individual descent into the atmosphere, on one hand, and of rescuing the stranded flyer in space, on the other.
