Bash describes the three ways there were to get to California when the nation was excited about the gold found there, 1848-49. The use of the covered wagon, and “Prairie Schooner” is described, including information that it was shaped as it was so it could float across the rivers that had to be crossed. The route of taking a ship to Panama, then crossing the swampy Isthmus on foot is described, and then the third way, that of taking the long and dangerous trip by ship all the way around Cape Horn. Maps and authentic pictures illustrate the material, and a model of the record breaking Clipper Ship, “The Flying Cloud” is shown. In this program the new developments in American music are introduced through a study of Roy Harris' Symphony Number 3. Professor Woodworth interprets this music in terms of a growing American nationalism which express such American problems as the will to succeed, the desire for spiritual assurance, and the materialistic conflict in musical terms. Harris’ rejection of the techniques of Stravinsky, and his return to Baroque musical forms influences all of his music, and particularly this Symphony. Professor Woodworth plays recorded portions of this work to demonstrate some of the unique characteristics of this form of American music.

Moving deeply into the German romanticism of the 19th Century, the symphony grew as composers experimented with new methods of orchestration, and an increased expression of feeling and mood. Professor Woodworth illustrates this change as he plays recordings of Schubert's Symphony Number 7, and Mendelssohn's Symphony Number 35. The need to express intense subjectivity in music lead to structural changes in the composition of Mendelssohn's symphonies. This need is one of the key characteristics of German romantic music.

Sculpture on its grandest scale is seen in the face of the Earth where rivers work to carve the hills and valleys. Dr. Harbaugh’s guest is Dr. Arthur D. Howard, professor of geology at Stanford University, who served as geologist with the Fourth Byrd Expedition to Antarctica in 1946-47. With the aid of three dimensional models, they demonstrate the ways in which a narrow stream can shape a vast expanse of land which is dozens of times its width. They discuss the way in which an area of the Earth, just as a man, goes through the ages of “youth,” “maturity,” and “old age.”
Dr. Harbaugh describes the unceasing war between land and the sea and illustrates the work of ocean waves in shaping the seacoast. With Dr. Howard again as his guest, he investigates the origin of such seashore features as beaches, spits, and sea cliffs.
Describes research related to atomic structure through which the scientist is attempting to discover the structure of the universe. Shows how particle accelerators produce intense beams of radiation which enable study of the structure of the atom, the nucleus, and the basic components of the nucleus. Explains how accelerators operate and shows one of the world's largest particle accelerators, the Zero Gradient Synchrotron, a $50,000,000 machine still under construction. Describes the sub-nuclear particles in which the high energy physicist is interested and briefly discusses the concept of matter and anti-matter.
The movement of traveling farmers, who follow the crops around the country, picking them as they ripen at different times in various areas is described in this program. The beginnings of the seasonal worker, when the land for farming for one’s self became difficult to find, start the story. It carries on through the possibility of following various crops all over the country, moving from one to another as they ripen. The ripening of cotton, apples, onions, tomatoes, strawberries and various others are shown on a large map, and the travels of the seasonal worker depicted on an animated visual. Songs include, “Chilly Winds,” “He’s Gone Away,” and “The Big Rock Candy Mountain.”
The children have to write their own story for a second part of the contest. Susie-Q decides to tell the story of how her kitten finally got to the cat show and won a prize.
In the second part of the music contest, the children do a square dance and act out a folk song in competition. They learn about music as a means of self-expression.
Dr Harbaugh's guest is Dr. Stanley Davis, assistant professor of geology at Stanford University. A graduate of the University of Nevada with a M.S. from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. from Yale, he has also worked with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Kansas and Missouri Geological Surveys. Dr. Davis makes his own rocks on this program. In doing so, he demonstrates how nature is able to make solid rock through the copaction of clays, sands, and silts under great pressure. They discuss the part of North America which although now dry land was once part of the ocean.
Father Linehan uses charts and diagrams to explain the interior structure of the Earth and the transmission of Earth waves through the various layers of the Earth. Dr. Gould emphasizes two facts: (1) seismology is a science that permits us to develop an x-ray picture of the Earth’s interior and, turning to Antarctica, he notes (2) that ice, in the Antarctic, is a rock and hence satisfactory for seismic x-raying. Using film Father Linehan describes the first seismic study ever made at the South Pole to determine the ice depth.

In this program, criminologist Joseph D. Lohman explains that the failure of the American prison system is due to attempts to induce reform through external processes of security, harsh discipline and regimented life. Scudder and Lohman discuss the progress gained in self-governing prisons where the inmates’ role is changed from one of responding to orders to one of a creative source. Films are used to show inmates in various prison settings and an inmate is interviewed to bring out his feelings about these types of prisons.

Man learned early to read the messages of the footprint and the broken twig and the book of the clouds and the tides, as truly as though these were printed texts. Soon he began to make readable marks, blazing trails, signaling with piled stones and scratches on rock. Out of this came primitive pictograph for purposes of magic, commemoration, and communication. He talked to strangers in a sign language, the very symbols of which later were written down as characters. Simple pictures of these things came to stand for complicated ideas, as well as the things themselves. This opening program shows how very elaborate messages were early conveyed by simple signs.

Simpleton dreams of living in a palace. He takes the silver coin his mother has given him and sets out to seek his fortune. One day on the road, he meets a man with a goose and buys the goose to give the King. Two guards at the palace refuse to let Simpleton see the King until he promises to give them half of what the King gives him for the goose. The King is very pleased with the goose and asks Simpleton what he wants in return. Simpleton replies he wants a beating. When the King asks his reason for such a reward, Simpleton tells him of his treatment by the guards. The King orders the guards out of the palace and appoints Simpleton as a Royal member of the guard.
Dr. Feinberg delves into the background of Sinclair Lewis to try and show why this man turned to satire in his literary works. Examples of his satire are cited and discussed.
In this program, host Lohman examines the development of large prisons and the treatment of inmates in this type of institution. Film clips illustrate the masses of inmates confined and a prisoner tells of his life in such an institution. Wilkinson and Lohman discuss administrative problems occurring in the management of such large prisons and point out that modern penal thinking indicates a trend toward smaller prisons.

Still with the Beethoven Eroica movement as an example, the Recapitulation of sonata=form is shown to be a more or less exact representation of the Exposition, with the one basic difference that the second subject and all the themes it contains, now appear in the tonic or home key (just like the first subject). The remainder of the movement (after the Recapitulation) is a superb instance of a Beethovian Coda – a vast expansion of the simple “tail piece” first mentioned in Program VIII. Here the Coda is practically a second Development section, in which the composer draws his themes together (including the episode theme from the Development), still transforming and manipulating them, and builds them up to a forceful, clinching close.
