Like the young lad who decided to leave home to start out on his own, the Young USA found that independence brought problems of its own, along with responsibilities and many terrifying challenges. First, there was the problem of organizing a central government which could mold thirteen sovereign commonwealths into a truly United States. The Articles of Confederation experiment failed because it denied the Central Government the necessary strength to enforce its laws. Then a fortuitous chain of meetings and discussion ultimately led to the gathering in Philadelphia of May 1787, out of which came the remarkable Constitution. After eleven years the bitterly contested ratification was complete and the first stage of the so-called “critical period” was passed.

Rudolph F. Bannow, national vice president and director of the National Association of Manufacturers is interviewed by Dr. EW Ziebarth, news analyst with WCCO, Minneapolis, Minnesota. At the beginning of the program, Mr. Bannow points out that his own background is that of a mechanic, and much of his approach to labor-management relationships stems from his first-hand knowledge of labor’s problems. He recounts how his company, Bridgeport Machines, Inc., had humble beginnings and has grown to a multi-million dollar enterprise. He stresses, however, that 83% of the members of the National Association of Manufacturers are persons representing small businesses. Mr. Bannow says that work must involve compensations other than money. Some work is interesting, some almost totally frustrating. He states that many of the very monotonous jobs today can be made bearable by the thought in many cases, that monotony is the price we pay for our high standard of living. Mr. Bannow expresses strong feelings about the fact that management and labor do not communicate effectively with one another, and that they must learn how to communicate more effectively if our system is to prosper. He cites efforts in his own company to keep labor well informed concerning the point of view of management. He freely admits that the fault very often falls on the side of management, but that the NAM continually conducts seminars on employee relations in an effort to improve the situation. Foreign competition is a great concern of the NAM. The watch industry has almost completely gone abroad within the past several years. He cites the cost of a milling machine in the United States which was priced to $22,000. The same machine can be purchased from England for $15,000. This is caused not only by the fact that European wages are lower, but there are certain psychological factors which contribute to the difference. Mr. Bannow says the tax system forces the people who are capable of producing new jobs to bear the heaviest tax burden. He looks upon this as a kind of punishment for success. The NAM has a tax program which calls for gradual adjustment of taxes downward for all brackets. Inflation greatly disturbs Mr. Bannow. He states that on a 1940 base, we now have a forty-eight cent dollar, and he wonders at what point chaos will set in. In conclusion, he repeats that communication between labor and management is the most important item to be improved

The New York Woodwind Quintet is featured on this opening program with introductions by Yehudi Menuhin. There are many reasons why Americans are inclined to shy away from opera, and some of those reasons are good ones, says Dr. Jan Popper as he introduces opera to the layman. But, he points out, there is opera for every taste – from the Spanish dances of Bizet to the serenity of Wagner and to the languishing harmonies of Puccini. Thus this lively little Czech begins his discussion of opera, a discussion which is punctuated with demonstrations at the piano by the noted musician and by musical interjections form opera singers.

Mr. Alwin Nikolais and Miss Myers discuss the dancer’s need to say something new in terms of his medium, and the resulting break with the classical forms which was pioneered by Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis. A panel of high school students representing Germany, the Philippines, Israel, Ceylon and Iran are divided in opinion as to whether or not US aid acts as a war curb. The panel agrees that aid is necessary to the economic development of their countries, but two of the speakers point out that American aid has a detrimental side as well. The delegate from Iran states that, in his opinion, American economic aid to Iran has not worked and has pointed up class differences by providing big salaries for some while leaving the unemployment problem unsolved. The Israel delegate answers, however, by saying that his country is using American aid to "great benefit… This serves the cause of peace."
In this program, the activities of prison personnel are shown via film clips and criminologist Joseph D. Lohman describes the skills necessary for the intelligent operation of a penal institution. A guard who has served through several political changes in administration tells of problems created by the lack of tenure needed to build a professional force. Lohman and Alexander discuss the need for professional jail administrators and staffs and the related need for a wide variety of professional services to bring prisons up to the standards set by modern penological knowledge.
Is fear the main element preventing war at the present time? Is fear an adequate basis on which to build a lasting peace? Is the UN the answer? These are some of the thought-provoking questions which four forum delegates consider in this second program. The teen agers compare their own war experiences, which range from the Italian invasion of Ethiopia to the German occupation of Norway. An ironic coincidence is revealed as the Australian delegate tells how her father was held prisoner in Germany and the German student, in turn, relates his father's imprisonment in Australia.

This is Tom Tichenor’s new version of Jack and the Beanstalk. Animal marionettes tell the story. Jack Rabbit sells his cow for magic beans. His mother throws them out the window and a giant beanstalk grows up overnight. Jack Rabbit climbs the stalk to the Giant's castle and finds the Sun Bonney Bird which belongs to Jack's family before the Giant stole it. With the help of the Bird, Jack takes the money that belongs to him and runs down the beanstalk with the Giant in pursuit. Jack's mother and grandmother help him chop down the stalk and the Giant is killed. Jack's cow is returned to him because she won't stand on her head for anyone but Jack.

Summary:
Introduces the abstract expressionism of Jack Tworkov and his feelings about the meaningfulness of his work, along with a description of the events which led him to become an artist. Presents him working on a painting, discussing his interest in producing what he calls organic form or shape by using a straight line and changing its contour while keeping its origin and end points the same. Shows several examples of his long-stroke abstract paintings which established him as one of America's major contemporary painters.
As a boy, Maxwell was subject to the brutal teasing of his classmates. As an adult he met and solved several scientific problems that had been perplexing his contemporaries. He won a prize for demonstrating mathematically the nature of the rings around Saturn. But his most important achievement, which was at once the result of Faraday’s experiments and the beginning of much important new work by later scientists in physics and electricity, was his contribution to the study of electromagnetics and his predictions of the existence of electromagnetic waves. The processes and apparatuses he used are sketched in detail by Dr. Posin. The topic is a complicated one, but worth the attention of anyone who intends to pursue modern physics on his own.

A frog's tongue is fastened to the front of his mouth. A frog can catch flies while jumping. Frogs eat flies. Dora and Fignewton use the felt-board technique to tell the story of Freddy Frog who found that he turned somersaults when he tried to jump for fliest. One day he entered a contest with another somersaulting frog and became so nervous he forgot how to turn somersaults. He did find that he could catch flies while he jumped, so he was happy anyways.
