Introduces the personalities and works of Frank O'Hara and Ed Sanders through their readings, environments, and approaches to their medium. Presents O'Hara reading "To the Film Industry in Crisis," "The Day Lady Dies," "Song," and "Having a Coke with You." Visits O'Hara's bookstore while he discusses his pacifism, literary rock-and-roll, his interest in filmmaking, and the content of some of his poetry. Shows Sanders in the Lower East Side neighborhood of New York where he lives, in his bookstore. Describes an experience of his and the poem "Cemetery Hill" which came out of this experience.
Tonal and rhythmic change of character develop from the manipulation of the basic “kernel” of motivation. Dr. Jones also analyzes the simple ternary form from Beethoven to illustrate thematic variation or development of themes.
Dr. Jones, in this program, explains the tremendous expansion of the basic ternary scheme into “sonata-form” and illustrates some of the simpler means of thematic development in sonata and symphonic movements based on this plan. There are, he indicates, no limits to the skillful manipulation of themes in the hands of masters of thematic development like Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.

In this program, Dr. Jones illustrates textural contrast, i.e., the setting of passages of homophonic texture against polyphonic passages in the same composition, with examples from Palestrina, Bach and Handel. Thematic contrast is explained as the juxtaposition of themes of contrasting characters in somewhat the manner of conflict in drama.
In this discussion, Dr. Jones explains thatternary form is the repetition of an opening section of a composition after further development of the theme. This repetition brings the opening in to a relationship of tension with the rest of the piece since it closes or completes the structure, which would collapse without the repetition.
The motive is the core, kernel or “single cell” of a piece of music, according to Dr. Jones. This basic musical symbol is made meaningful by reiteration, which is motivic repetition. Illustrations are presented from Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and Stravinsky.

Summary:
Provides a close view of Dorothea Lange and her photographs, enabling the viewer to share her deep involvement in her work and her philosophy as a photographer. Looks in on Lange as she prepares for a one-woman exhibition of her work covering the past fifty years and comments on the reasons and emotions that have moved her to photograph particular scenes. Represents, with her death in October, 1965, a memorial to her and to the despair and hope which she captured so well in her documentary photographs.
Discusses five devices for putting power into sentences. Includes (1) arranging words in order of importance, (2) keeping the main idea in the main clause, (3) keeping the minor clause at the beginning, and the major clause at the end, (4) keeping the reader in suspense until the end, and (5) arranging words in an unnatural order. Dr. Lippisch points out the main problems of flight: lift and drag, control and stability, and propulsion. He explains the correlation between flow velocity, the local pressure, and the distance between streamlines. A picture of a light plane in flight is projected into the wind tunnell so that viewers may have a side view of such a plane and the streamlines around it. He explains velocity distribution and demonstrates how increasing speed diminishes the pressure on a surface and vice versa.
Delinquent behavior is not directly related to IQ. Sheriff Lohman reviews this point with Dr. A. Arthur Hartman of the Psychiatric Bureau of Chicago’s Municipal Court. Case studies of two delinquent boys are presented, one with a low IQ and the other with a high one.

Dr. Dietrich Reitzes, associate professor of social psychology at the University of Indiana and a member of the US Selective Service in Felon Studies, joins Sheriff Lohman for a study of the relationship between youth’s neighborhood and his acts of misbehavior. Captain Boone presents another case study. The Sheriff and Dr. Reitzes discuss the problem of areas which seem to breed delinquency. Illustrations of houses in the shadow of commerce and industry, buildings in neighborhoods that are physically deteriorating and dangerous, neighborhoods where the population is in transition, where economic dependency is on relief agencies, where neighborhood disorganization is taking place, where the population of adult criminals is high and where gangs are common –these are all illustrated.
Discusses the kinds of love prevalent in America. Father Thurston Davis and Dr. Erich Fromm are questioned concerning present-day misconceptions concerning love, genuine love versus perverted love, the connection between sexuality and love, and love as a religious virtue.

Dr. Lippisch introduces his series and the basic laws of fluid motion by means of new methods of visualizing the flow phenomenon. He also introduces the Smoke Tunnel (a type of wind tunnel) which is so designed as to make it possible to observe the entire flow field and to see clearly the action of the aircraft components. He shows how the first man-made flying vehicle, the kite, is a primitive application of the dynamic life of the flat plate.

Dr. Margaret Mead and Dr. Bertram Beck are questioned on the effect of cultural pressures on family life and the changing distinctions between men and women. Also presents views on a trend toward family centeredness, early marriages, and a greater desire for children.

"Dr. Lippisch's theme is the historical development of the flying machine. He begins his lecture with a short demonstration of Penaud's model. He shows how the invention of the cambered wing led to the first man-carrying aircraft, the glider. The next problem, the problem of control, was not conceived until the Wright Brothers began their pioneering glider experiments in Kitty Hawk, and Dr. Lippisch shows a scale model of their last (1902) glider and its control arrangement is demonstrated. As he shows film clips of the Wright Brothers' airplane, he explains the function of this first power aircraft."

Even before the improved lift devices were designed, the stability and control problems had to be solved and further improvements incorporated into the original systems. Dr. Lippisch illustrates how the stability and control system of the Wright brothers' glider differs from the system on the conventional aircraft of today.
The Wright Brothers solved three problems with their first plane: lift, control, and propulsion. The problem of lift was the one which caused the most controversial opinions between scientists and engineers. Dr. Lippisch traces the development of the cambered wing section until a streamlined cambered plate led to the development of the modern wing profile.
Bash Kennett takes a trip to show the crude wooden tools used by the pioneer and tells the story of tools from the plow, combine and steam tractor to modern farm equipment. The use of primitive farm tools illustrates a way of life; with each improvement in tools came a change in the way of life of the settler and thus history is reflected in the tools farmers use. Songs include “Old Joe Clarke” and “I Know My Love.”
Form the earliest time men ventured out on the open seas, lighthouses have saved him from the dangers of the coast. In this program, staring with the ancient lighthouse, which was a fire built on a cliff, viewers learn about lighthouses all over the world. Bash Kennett takes a film trip to two lighthouses in this country, showing the powerful prism reflectors, radio equipment and the life of a lighthouse keeper. Songs include “The Eddystone Light” and “Hi Barbaree.”
Bash tells of life before and after the invention of certain machines, such as the cotton gin, the steam engine and railroads. She sings “Every Night When the Sun Goes Down,” “Down in the Valley,” “Johnny with the Bendy Legs,” “Old Joe Clarke,” “Irene” and “Pick a Bale o’Cotton.”
The fabulous story of the men who built the railroad to join the Atlantic and Pacific coasts is told by Bash Kennett. The struggles of the laborers in the west who battled granite cliffs in order to lay more track than the crews on the plains who had to import their lumber is told. Songs include “Midnight Special,” “Down in the Valley” and “Drill Ye Terriers.”
Bash tells of woodcarving in early American life and explains how carving was done, what tools were used and exhibits some early chests, utensils, signs and Indian figures. Songs include “There’s a Hole in My Bucket,” “Bonnie Wee Lassie” and “Raisins and Almonds” and the Lillian Patterson Dancers pantomime one of the songs.
Host Bash Kennett discusses the history of sugar production. Early American methods of maple syrup making are described. The process of growing and refining sugar cane in Hawaii is summarized and shown in pictures. Finally, detailed film of growing, harvesting and refining sugar beets in the Western U.S. is shown (film provided by Western Beet Sugar Producers, Inc.). Songs performed include "Sugarbush" by Josef Marais and "How Lovely Cooks the Meat."
Bash spends a day with the animals of the zoo, visiting some zoo favorites and learning about the men who work in the zoo. Songs include “Animal Fair,” “Goat and the Train” and “Fooba Wooba John.”
After explaining the uses and preparations of candles in early times, Bash takes a film trip to a modern candle factory and compares techniques of the two ages. She sings “Dublin City” and “How Old Are You.”
There are many familiar expressions which we use. Bash traces the story behind some of these back to pioneer life. After showing how the phrases developed, Bash sings “Goin Down the Road,” “Lo Backed Car,” “Old MacDonald,” “How Old Are You?” “One Morning in May,” and “Caribou Headstone.”
The changes of season are described in terms of what the animals of the forest do during these times. Bash tells how each of the animals live during the four seasons. She sings “Saturday Night,” “Mr. Rabbit” and the “The Fox.”
Bash Kennett tells of the early American glassmakers, showing rare pieces made by Baron Stiegel, Caspar Wistar, Amelung and others. She describes the method of glassmaking, uses the glass throughout our history, the invention of the mass-produced bottle and the modern use of glass. Songs include “Devil’s Nine Questions” and “Ghost of Bisal.”
Bash Kennett tells about the art of craving the figureheads which graced the prow of sailing vessels in the past. She shows figureheads of all types and sings “Pretty Kitty” and “Wanderin.”
This is the story of the plants we eat and how some of the things we eat were brought her by the first settlers. Bash Kennett tells the history of some of our fruits and vegetables and the Lillian Patterson dancers illustrate an imaginary gardening scene. Songs include “Aunty Minna’s Cooking the Syrup,” “Goober Peas” and “Onions and Potatoes.”
Bash Kennett tells how the Indian boys practiced hunting and stalking the wild turkey and how thy used its feathers to fletch arrows, the spurs to tip them and the meat for feasts. She traces the development of the turkey and visits a modern turkey farm. Songs include “Three Crows” and “Three Ravens Sat on a Tree.”
Fences tell a story about the way of life of the people who built them, the use to which the land was put and something of the personality of the builder. Bash Kennett tells of early fences and takes a tour through the countryside, showing how one can imagine the story of each farm or house from the fence which surrounds it. She tells the story of the early fence-viewer, whose chain measure was the basis of the measurement of today’s mile and city block. Songs include “The Bird Song” and “The Sow Who Got the Measles.”
Tells the story of the Mayflower. Explains the preparations for the voyage and what the Puritans hoped to find in the New World. Describes the life of Pilgrims. Bash Kennett sings the songs "Three Blind Mice", "Pretty Saro", "Barbara Allen", "Do You Know The Muffin Man", "Wee Willie Winkie". Plays the lute as well as the guitar.
Bash Kennett visits a mountain roundup and tells the story of cattle from the few which the early settlers had to the great herds which roamed the Great Plains. The importance of cattle in the history of our country is combined with a talk about problems of raising cattle. Songs include “Cowboy’s Lullaby” “Donney Gal” and “The Night Herding Song.”
A sheet of paper is taken for granted today, but it was a treasure in other times. Bash Kennett tells of man’s attempt to create something on which he could record his thoughts. She traces the discovery of wood pulp which led to the conquest of America’s forests by loggers who cut the trees for paper mills. Songs include “Poor Pitat” and “Oh Susannah.”
Bash Kennett visits an old time grist mill, pointing out the huge water wheel used to turn the mill where wheat was ground into flour. She shows viewers the patterned mill stones and tells of activities in the days when settlers did everything form the planting of wheat to the baking of the bread. Songs include “Old Mill Stream” and “Waltzing Matilda.”
Bash Kennett visits with a blacksmith and watches him prepare and fit horse shoes. She describes the days when the smith’s shop was the busiest place in town and tells of the interdependence of the pioneer and the horse. Songs include “Old Paint,” “Donney Gal,” and “Horse Named Bill.”
Hand puppets are used to tell the age-old story of the two children whose step mother takes them to the forest and leaves them. The trail they've left with bread crumbs, is eaten by the birds, so unable to find their way home, they say their prayers and go to sleep under a tree. They wake in the morning and discover a candy house.
Beautifully costumed marionettes bring this original story by Tom Tichenor to life. It’s the tale of Princess Frumptious who is called "Frumpy" by her servants and people of the kingdom, because her hair is never combed, her apron never tied, her manners always rude. Youngsters will be intrigued with the manner in which she changes her habits and has her name changed to Princess Scrumptious.
Defines a vortex and explains its structure. Shows several types of vortex including the ring, tip and thermal vortex. Uses the smoke box, water tank, and motion pictures of tornadoes to illustrate how a vortex behaves. (State University of Iowa) Kinescope.
Man seems to have surpassed nature as he can fly faster and higher than the natural flying creatures. But further study of the flying habits of birds and insects is still necessary. Dr. Lippisch presents a discussion on the wing motion of birds and insects and how the texture and shape of the wings differ with the various birds and insects. Not only airborne animals apply the laws of fluid motion; the program also presents the propulsive systems of fish and shows the action of the fishtail-propeller in the Smoke Tunnel.
The importance of men who have learned to work with wood is Bash’s theme in this program. She tells of early settlers who had to do their own building and carving with crude tools. Through film, she then introduces a modern carpenter who demonstrates the use of a collection of historic tools, including one which was used to make wagon spokes. Songs include “Polly Put the Kettle On” and “Ham and Eggs.”
Bash takes a film expedition to a fish hatchery and shows the pools where fish are raised. She shows close-ups of a giant rainbow trout and goes with the hatchery truck to plant fish in the river. She walks down a stream to watch a boy fishing and then tells of the importance of natural wildlife in the past and today. Songs include “Irene” and “Long, Long Trail."
Can a career woman make a good mother? Max Lerner and six Brandeis students discuss the double dilemma of the American woman. In school she is caught between doing well scholastically and finding a man. Later it is the problem of a career versus homemaking. But there is a resistance to careers for women in this country. Today as opposed to the thirties, the woman is accused of marrying for security rather than for love. Before marriage the standard is to hold everything and to give nothing. After marriage the situation is reversed. The ideal solution appears to be have the fling and career before marriage. But the woman of today is still groping for the media between the two. Each must find the way most suitable for herself – the dilemma will then be solved.
Max Lerner and five Brandeis students discuss: what is the most important life goal; what is the criteria by which we measure Americans; is it the values that are held or is it the definitions given to those values that cause the trouble in America today; do people lose their identity in their striving for their life goal; do we ignore the word “freedom” in our search for life goals; are we afraid of freedom; is it possible to have solitude in our civilization; if our goals are unhealthy, with what do we replace them; should there be no forces that pressure personality in our society; what do the words “power,” “success,” “prestige” and “security” really mean; and who should be the one to judge the validity of one’s life goal.
What is the cause of the moral revolution? Other questions raised by Max Lerner and the five Brandeis students during this program are: what is the operative code of today; are we still a Puritan society; is the moral revolution of today merely discussion over such topics as the Kinsey Report; do the newspapers depict only a small percentage of the population, thus making the situation worse than it really is; how are the young people responding to the pressures in our society; has the idea of conformity to peers made the young people more permissive; were the old codes too repressive; was the older generation as pure as they claim to be; and are we succeeding in shaping a challenging code to replace the now degenerating operative one?
Many aspects of our popular culture are discussed provocatively by Max Lerner and five Brandeis students: Is the quality of culture higher today than a century ago? What distinction should be made between folk culture and popular culture? Do the people in control of our means of culture purposely keep the levels low? Have the cultural media tried to raise the level? What is the state of the artist today? How does the desire to make money affect the quality of creative work? Will giving the artist
more freedom uplift our cultural standards? Can a popular culture be “creative?” Does low taste have a place in our society?
Mr. Lerner and five Brandeis students discuss the following: what is it like to grow up in America; what kind of personality are we shaping; what is happening to the family; what is happening to the parent-child relationship; have the parents forgotten what it is like to be children; are children now being trained for competition rather than for happiness; do parents see children as a second chance; to what degree should there be permissiveness and restrictiveness; and is consistency the answer?
Max Lerner and five Brandeis students agree that a new educational revolution is needed. The discussion mainly focuses on the question of why it is needed and how it should come about. Among the questions dealt with are: To what end is education going? What kinds of emphasis should be placed on education (science versus the humanities)? Why have we fallen into our present educational predicament … can it be re-molded, and how? Does the fault lie in the teacher? What schools (elementary, grammar, high school, or college) could stand the greatest improvement? Is the giving of special privileges to brighter children averse to our democratic way of life?
Max Lerner discusses with Brandeis students’ questions concerning minorities and segregation. A few of the topics to be discussed are: is segregations in the South the result of prejudice or the result of social order; is the South’s attitude a rigid “defense mechanism” due to the pressures of the North: is the fear of inter-marriage the greatest deterrent to equality in the South; is there segregation in other minority groups; is there more than one kind of prejudice; and is it possible to hold onto one’s identity as a group and still assimilate culturally?

Is democracy lost in the social anarchy that there is today?

The story of money is one of a way of life, says Bash in this program. Money was not always coin or paper notes. There were many things which early pioneers could use to buy things. In Virginia, they used tobacco; in South Carolina, rice; Indians used shells and beads; trappers of the North could buy a gun with furs, and the man of New England used fish or timber for payment. Visits the San Francisco Bay's "Phoenix" fire boat, which is shown docked next to the Hills Brothers Coffee Company, and presents a demonstration of how the boat pumps water. Explains fire control in modern ships and discusses the important role of firemen who work in this role. Includes a performance of the traditional "I Grieve My Lord".
Describes the various groups of settlers that came to this country and founded colonies. Tells of the first French, English, Dutch, Swedish, and Spanish settlers. Discusses their lives, homes, and food.
This program begins before there were any schools in this country. Families taught their children at night after the chores were finished and in some cases a master craftsman taught young apprentices to read and write after work. The one room school house is recreated and the difficulties of supplies for classes are discussed. The Lillian Patterson dancers intersperse dances showing the play and games of early days. Songs include “Pretty Saro,” “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” “I Got Wings,” “Did You Ever See a Lassie,” “Little Sally Waters” and “As We Have done Before.”
Bash takes a trip to an old general store, driving up in a buggy as the early settler might have done. In the store she shops for old-time items and tells of their uses. She gets coffee from a big red coffee grinder and her meat is chopped in an old-fashioned hand cranked meat chopper. The stove and the “TV of the early day,” the stereopticon, are observed. Songs include “Blue Tail Fly” and “Bought Me a Cat.”
Bash talks about the brave men who have sailed small boats into the open ocean in search of fish from earliest times. They risk their lives and gamble their fortunes in these ventures. Bash takes a film trip to Fisherman’s Wharf to watch the mending of nets, the bustle of preparation and to see the fishing boats return to unload their catch of fish and crabs. Songs include “Blow the Man Down” and “Goodbye My Lover, Goodbye.”
The hat you wear tells much about where you live, what kind of life you lead and what the climate is, says Bash in this program. Hats can be fun and in this program the story of hats is started with the earliest head coverings used in ancient times. Songs include “Jennie Jenkins,” “Soldier and the Lady,” “Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat” and “He’s Gone Away.”

Illustrates how complete reliance on the physical senses can be deceiving. Explains the development and use of instruments to measure impressions and quantities man cannot see, hear, or feel. The program begins with Mr. Huntington’s explanation of why he works as hard as he does. Does the income tax make any difference to his incentive to work? Mr. Morris describes his objections to the present income tax system. He explains his theory that production, which is the purpose of the corporation, is best served when they interests of the individual coincide with company interests. To this Mr. Greber adds his belief that an organization must have room for active participation in it by all its members. Mr. Huntington adds that this explains why it is important for the organization to work well as a team. The three men discuss how much a large corporation should engage in “non-profit” activities. Mr. Huntington and Mr. Morris agree that a job must give satisfaction to the individual, if it is to be well done, and worth doing. In conclusion, Mr. Morris declares that he has not felt any desire to go into business for himself: he finds his job in the corporation altogether satisfying and stimulating
