This is the tale of a Japanese lord who, seeking to know the true feeling of his people, travels incognito among his population. He is caught in a snow store and taken in by a poor couple. So poor was the couple that there was no firewood in the house. To warm their guest, they burned their only treasured possessions, three potted plants. For their generosity, the lord rewarded them with wealth and rand. Artist Mikamo illustrates this story with drawing of potted plum and pine trees.

Watch a searchlight as it pierces heavy night clouds. Notice that you don’t see the beam of light, merely where it comes from: the face of the searchlight, reflections from the clouds or duct blocking the beam. In other words, the light beam itself is invisible. Beginning with a similar demonstration, Edwin C. Kemble shows the difficulty science has had in providing a wholly satisfactory theory of light. He uses a stroboscopically lighted tank to illustrate wave theory and high-voltage discharges to suggest the violence necessary to generate radiant energy with short wavelengths. The violent damage done by X-rays, gamma rays and ultra violet radiation leads Kemble to the corpuscular explanation of light. By an examination of cloud-chamber photographs, visibly recording action in the unseen world of atomic particles, Kemble reconciles the two theories. The yield of this revolutionary work is dramatic: no less than the discovery of a universal property of all forms of existence.
Each year on July 7, the seventh day of the seventh month – the festival of the stars is celebrated in Japan. Artist T. Mikami tells the history of this festival, which is based on the legend of Shokujo, the daughter of the King of the Heavens, who fell in love with a herd boy. Shokujo and her lover were permitted to see each other only once a year, as the Milky Way would overflow and be impossible to cross. Each year at the festival of stars, the Japanese pray it will not rain and they decorate their homes with bamboo trees, from which they hang strips of colored paper upon which poems about lovers are written. Brush paintings of bamboo are drawn by Mikami.

Prof. Boring presents examples of instinctive behavior: Iron filings line up in a magnetic field; a cat rights itself when dropped; plants turn toward light; a person’s eyes blink, when an object suddenly passes close to the eye.
Prof. Boring shows how human beings can be “set” or “tuned in” to a special response just as a radio can be tuned to a particular station. The brain can be directed along a certain channel, which it will follow until that channel or “station” is changed. Once told to think of rhyming words for example the voluntary subject concentrates on the sound of words almost exclusively, until she comes to “month,” for which there is only one unfamiliar rhyme. There is a definite reason for most of your likes and dislikes, says Prof. Boring. He shows how measurements of them can be taken themselves, examples of preferred experiences which are largely results of learning; for example, pleasant pains, dissonance in musical intervals, and cultivated smells. He reminds us that man is a behaving organism that tries to get what he likes and likes what he tries to get, and that his preferences are established by heredity and learning.

On his PLATFORM programs, Dr. Thomas A. Dooley speaks his mind on the image of America in Southeast Asia. He calls for a renewal of the traditional American approach to under-developed countries --the approach through American individuals and voluntary organizations rather than heavy reliance on government agencies. “The most powerful tool we have is the human personality. Education is the most important thing we have to offer to Asia, and people are the only ones who can bring education. Books and propaganda leaflets cannot do it. The tremendous value that I wish more people in Washington would realize is the value of the individual person. If we would just flood these countries with individual young American men and women we could accomplish a great deal. We need people who will live and work with these people in their villages.” Dr. Dooley points out that the Communists realize that the future of Asia lies in the villages. They are making an intensive effort through local people to identify America with the hated French colonialism. He says the Communists attack the spirit of America and we too often counter with mere boasting about our material achievements. Dr. Dooley also discusses the “Great White Fleet” which he feels is going to cause more harm than good. He believes the term “Great White Fleet” is an unfortunate one since it fails to recognize the Asian distrust of the white man and hatred of colonialism. Fleets were instruments of imperialism in the past and a great aircraft carrier in a harbor of Asia or Africa even if it is loaded with medicine conveys another meaning to the people. His major criticism of the “Great White Fleet” is, however, that it is not a “grass roots” program designed to be an integral long-range part of the underdeveloped countries.
George Meany, President of the AFL-CIO, is interviewed on this program by Dr. John Schwarzwalder, general manager of KTCA-TV, St. Paul. Mr. Meany talks of the fight to make labor recognized by management as an entity, worthy of consideration. Once this was accomplished, two of the chief aims of trade unionism were to encourage and work for greater free public education, and to raise the standard of living in the United States. There is still much to be done in the area of family problems, but first and foremost, labor’s most important task is to get its workers and their children a fair share, Mr. Meany says. On automation, Mr. Meany states that the trade union movement wholeheartedly accepts the validity of the attempt to lighten the burden of human labor. Labor, however, claims it is necessary that the economy expand sufficiently to offset the resulting unemployment caused by automation. If the economy does not sufficiently expand, Mr. Meany says a shorter work week is the only answer to the labor problems posed by automation. He considers the most important piece of labor legislation in the past fifty years was the Wagner Act of 1935, which gave labor the right to organize. He adds that he considers the Taft-Hartley legislation the most damaging piece of labor legislation. Is American labor pricing itself out of the world market? Mr. Meany says labor must bring the rest of the world up to the standards of the United States rather than cut American standards down to those of the rest of the world.
Rudolph F. Bannow, national vice president and director of the National Association of Manufacturers is interviewed by Dr. EW Ziebarth, news analyst with WCCO, Minneapolis, Minnesota. At the beginning of the program, Mr. Bannow points out that his own background is that of a mechanic, and much of his approach to labor-management relationships stems from his first-hand knowledge of labor’s problems. He recounts how his company, Bridgeport Machines, Inc., had humble beginnings and has grown to a multi-million dollar enterprise. He stresses, however, that 83% of the members of the National Association of Manufacturers are persons representing small businesses. Mr. Bannow says that work must involve compensations other than money. Some work is interesting, some almost totally frustrating. He states that many of the very monotonous jobs today can be made bearable by the thought in many cases, that monotony is the price we pay for our high standard of living. Mr. Bannow expresses strong feelings about the fact that management and labor do not communicate effectively with one another, and that they must learn how to communicate more effectively if our system is to prosper. He cites efforts in his own company to keep labor well informed concerning the point of view of management. He freely admits that the fault very often falls on the side of management, but that the NAM continually conducts seminars on employee relations in an effort to improve the situation. Foreign competition is a great concern of the NAM. The watch industry has almost completely gone abroad within the past several years. He cites the cost of a milling machine in the United States which was priced to $22,000. The same machine can be purchased from England for $15,000. This is caused not only by the fact that European wages are lower, but there are certain psychological factors which contribute to the difference. Mr. Bannow says the tax system forces the people who are capable of producing new jobs to bear the heaviest tax burden. He looks upon this as a kind of punishment for success. The NAM has a tax program which calls for gradual adjustment of taxes downward for all brackets. Inflation greatly disturbs Mr. Bannow. He states that on a 1940 base, we now have a forty-eight cent dollar, and he wonders at what point chaos will set in. In conclusion, he repeats that communication between labor and management is the most important item to be improved

Expressing valor and benevolence, this famous Japanese legend tells the tale of a boy who was found inside a peach by an elderly Japanese couple. The boy later rewards their kindness in caring for him by successfully going after a treasure to make the rest of their days happy. He is accompanied on his adventure by a monkey and a pheasant. Mr. Mikami draws illustrations of a monkey and a pheasant.
After putting the outline of his main figure on the canvas, Painter Reinhardt does something which non-artists might consider astonishing: he begins to cover the figure with the “underpainting.” But as he talks and explains what he is doing, another technique of the artist becomes clear. With this part of the job done, the audience is left to await the next step in the making of a painting.
This tale involces the feathered robe of an angel and a fishermam who found it on a pine tree branch and was reluctant to give it up. The fisherman agrees to return the robe if the angel will perform a celestial dance for him, whereupon the angel dons the robe to dance and ascends to heaven. The pine tree on which the robe was hung is said to be standing now at Miho-no-matsubara in Shizuoka, Japan. Mr. Mikami illustrates this legend with a drawing of a fisherman.
Discusses imitative polyphony as a basic principle of musical structure. Illustrates two types of composition which use imitative polyphony as the structural principle, namely, the sixteenth century motet and the fugue as heard in Handel's Messiah. (WMSB-TV) Kinescope.
The delegates discuss Britain's reaction to "the United States' humiliation in its satellite rivalry with the USSR" and what America is famous for in each of the representatives' countries.
Participants are Miss Mirka Misic, Yugoslavia; Miss Susan Rennie, Union of South Africa; Mr. Norbert Scholz, Germany; Mr. Young-Koo Lee, Korea; and Mrs. Waller. The debate on the nature of communism is enlivened by the young Yugoslavian delegate who attempts to defend her country's brand of communism under questioning by representatives of Germany, Korea and the Union of South Africa. Mirka insists that Russia borders on imperialism while her country has communism at its best. She asserts that co-existence between communism and capitalism is necessary "if we want a peaceful world." The Korean panel member, however, vigorously replied that communism "by its very nature" denies co-existence with the capitalist countries. Speaking from his firsthand experience of communism during three months in North Korea after that area was captured by the Communists during the Korean war, he is violently in disagreement with anything communistic. He is joined in his views by the remaining two members of the panel.
The last meeting of the Herald Tribune Youth Forum was a meeting of the complete group at the U.N. General Assembly hall. Episode nine deals more or less with world problems. The role of the U. N. in world affairs is considered, particularly the problem of colonialism and the U. N.s ability to regulate trusteeships and mandates. The problem of "power politics", and the necessity to align with one side or the other, is presented by Vangala Ram, the delegate from India: "The only real moment of strangeness I recall was during a conversation about world politics. The participants seemed to think that the only powers worth considering in today's world are the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R." Peter Hudson of the United Kingdom later countered this, saying: "Today neutral countries are not the strong countries. They use neutrality to justify their weakness, either because they don't want to be strong or because they are too small to be strong."
