Examining the characteristics of archival film prints as they survive in fragmentary and variant versions, Panel Two: The Carrier as Content evaluated these material manifestations of early black-audience films as presenting evidence for understanding their meaning and context.
Panel Two: The Carrier as Content was moderated by Rachael Stoeltje (Indiana University - Bloomington). Four speakers, Jacqueline Stewart (University of Chicago), Mike Mashon (Library of Congress, Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division), Leah Kerr (The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures) and Jan-Christopher Horak (University of California, Los Angeles), presented during Panel Two and participated in a concluding Question and Answer Session.
This brown bag session will present the Libraries' most recent online Omeka exhibition of World War II propaganda films which went live on June 6th, the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
The IULMIA (Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive) staff will present the conceptual idea behind the exhibit, the steps taken to select and digitize the content, working with the Library Technology staff and the process of building the online exhibit.
This project will examine the interviews conducted in my research on housing and the making of Black Chicago. Through oral interviews with former residents of different neighborhoods in Chicago, oral histories allow researchers to gain an understanding on how blackness seen through the eyes of everyday black people.These interviews and oral histories are a crucial component to understanding the culture of Black Chicago and assist a wider audience greatly in a compelling and original research on housing for African Americans in Chicago and contribute to the greater conversation regarding intersections of race, class, and policy. In this presentation, I will illustrate how oral histories give voice to everyday people and key pieces into gaining insight on Black people and the joys of everyday blackness. This project contributes to wider conversations surrounding Black Chicago and the future of Black people in the city and how the local history contributes to the present realities. The current crisis in many urban areas across the United States and looks at how issues such as community and housing have been addressed for the African American middle class and the urban poor. Through this conversation, I add how the oral histories of residents can contribute to current the policy discussions had within the urban Black communities concerning the intersection of race and class.
The William V.S. Tubman Photograph Collection was the first to pilot DLP's Photocat web application and an early collection ingested into ICO. The IU Liberian Collections (IULC) learned many lessons between its first 2004 encounter with the Tubman albums in the damp library of an abandoned country mansion in Liberia and their becoming publicly available world-wide via ICO in 2011. Funded by grants from the British Library's Endangered Archives Programme and Africana Librarians Council/Title VI Librarians/CAMP, the IULC worked with numerous IU Libraries and SLIS staff, students and faculty. The Lingle Craig Preservation Laboratory, IU Archives and the the African Studies Collection made very important contributions, but the Digital Library Program had the greatest impact on the project through their digital library infrastructure and related tools. The presentation will review the project's seven-year history, focusing on lessons learned as an early adopter regarding project workflow and dealing with the design and content of metadata.
The PetrArchive is a new digital archive and ‰ÛÃrich text‰Û edition of Francesco Petrarca's iconic fourteenth-century songbook Rerum vulgarium fragmenta (Rvf; Canzoniere). A primary goal of the PetrArchive is to document, investigate and illustrate the graphic codes and structures‰ÛÓespecially the ‰ÛÃvisual poetics‰Û‰ÛÓof the work. Our paper will discuss and demonstrate specifically the broad issue of indexicality in the context of the digital editing and encoding practices and strategies adopted and exploited in pursuit of this goal.
The Rvf is both in its manuscript tradition and our new edition a highly indexed and indexable book. An index often contains a list of words, subjects, titles and addresses, as well as pointers and locations of references. These lists and addresses provide a representation, map, or model of a document. A comprehensive, hierarchical, multifaceted index to, for instance, a large edition of letters is of tremendous practical value as a guide through the collection. An index may also be a remarkable work in itself as a structured conceptual model of the contents of a collection. Often indexical structures are embedded in the document as we find in the Bible and other religious texts, with book titles, chapter and verse numbers, and cross-references embedded throughout the text. Petrarch's adherence in his model holograph MS Vatican Latino 3195 to his 31-line graphic canvas and his designs of various combinations of verse forms to fill that canvas generate, among other things, a visual index to the document, with the textual and graphic shapes of the manuscript serving as a visual map of genre and generic juxtaposition. Our project will build a graphic representation, or visualization, of the manuscript that will allow readers to browse and scan‰ÛÓby shape and structure‰ÛÓthe distribution, combination, and juxtaposition of genre and form throughout the manuscript.
Another aspect of our visual and schematic indices to the edition will be the animation of Petrarch's own poetics of erasure and transcription, through which he revises his texts but also deforms the patterns of his own indexical practices to highlight the importance of the work's visual-poetic structuring. We will demonstrate an example of this deformation in our animation of the canzone Quel' antiquo mio dolce empio signore (Rvf 360). In his own holograph MS, by then a service copy, Petrarch is forced to abandon his ideal layout for the prosodic form of the canzone. Only in subsequent MSS will the canzone revert to its ideal, authorial form not in the author's hand. Our representation will allow readers to view the poem morphing from one layout to the other, requiring the encoding of both the actual and ideal layout in the document and the interpretation of those codes in the digital design and publishing layers of the edition. Beyond their instant utility in allowing users an overview of the design of individual MS pages and of the Rvf's complex system of combining forms, these indices reconfigure the equally complex layers of indexical structures inherent in a scholarly edition.
Circuses and other traveling shows were a staple of nineteenth-century American society, but just how American were they? This project uses digital mapping together with traditional archival research to investigate the geographic reach, business networks, and cultural significance of three iconic American shows: Cooper, Bailey, and Company’s Great International; the Barnum and Bailey Circus; and Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Mapping their routes from the 1870s to the 1910s reveals how thoroughly they were embedded in global entertainment circuits—Cooper and Bailey travelled to Australia, New Zealand, India, and a handful of South American countries in the late 1870s; Buffalo Bill visited countries in Europe between 1887 and 1892 and again from 1902 to 1906; and Barnum and Bailey toured extensively in Europe from 1898 to 1902. Furthermore, in 1899, James Bailey officially relocated the headquarters of his circus to England, establishing the publically traded company Barnum and Bailey, Limited. By contrast, none of these shows travelled consistently to the west coast of the United States until 1907. Analysis of these entertainment geographies helps us rethink standard narratives of national integration in the U.S. in the second half of the nineteenth century and recasts institutions traditionally understood as quintessentially American in a transnational and global light.

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most pressing global health issues of the 21st century and is worsening with the COVID-19 pandemic. With existing antibiotics losing potency and limited classes of antibiotics in the pipeline, alternatives are needed to battle multi-drug resistant bacterial infections ("superbugs"). Through the lens of her family’s personal experience with a deadly superbug infection, Dr. Strathdee’s presentation focuses on the medical history of viruses that attack bacteria (bacteriophage, or phage) and how they have been used to treat superbug infections for over 100 years. Dr. Strathdee also discusses the reasons why bacteriophage therapy fell out of favor in the West (drawing from research conducted by medical historian Dr. William Summer), recent advances in phage therapy that led to the founding of the first dedicated phage therapy institute in North America (IPATH), and the role of her family’s case in the process.

This film shows a typical day at the Exchange Home near the Speech and Hearing Center at Indiana University. Founded in 1938, it is named after the Exchange Clubs of Indiana, which provided funding for the home. The Exchange Home is a two story residence that includes a kitchen, dining rooms, laundry room, play room, TV lounge, and bedrooms for 25 children. A house mother and students majoring in speech and hearing live in the Exchange Home with the children.

Designed to serve as a stimulus for discussion, this film shows the various steps in determining whether a student will be placed in a special education class. Demonstrates the following procedural steps used by school officials to determine whether Fred will be transferred to a special education class: appointing the case conference committee, sharing information, initiation of individual educational plan, placement review, and revised program. Records Fred's parents being told that his cognitive, verbal, and perceptual progress is below normal for his grade level and shows their disapproval for transferring Fred to a special education class. Indicates that they will request a hearing to determine Fred's status.
Examines some of the processes and people involved in nuclear physics through an experiment conducted at the renowned cyclotron facility at Indiana University, Bloomington. A team of four physicists sets out to test the validity of a commonly held theory on particle movement. Viewers get to know them and their work during the four-day experiment, sharing in their frustrations and their findings. The complex workings of the cyclotron and the intricacies of particle movement are also carefully detailed.

My project maps the monuments erected during the Salvadoran Civil War (1979-1992) and especially after the peace process in San Salvador (1992-1993) related to this conflict. The Salvadoran Civil War, fought between the guerrillas unified under the FMLN and the US-backed Salvadoran army, was one of the fiercest conflicts in Latin America during the 20thcentury and one of the last to be produced in the context of the Cold War. In addition to the intensity of the armed struggle and the high number of civilian casualties, this conflict is notorious because it had no clear winner and was the first peace process mediated by United Nations. Furthermore, one of the recommendations of the UN’s Commission on the Truth for El Salvador was the erection of a monument for the civilian casualties of the conflict. Although Salvadoran governments ignored this recommendation for years until The Monumento a la Memoria y la Verdad was inaugurated in 2003, many more monuments have continued to populate San Salvador’s landscape. My project tracks the patterns of memorialization that emerged during the transition to democracy in this country and aims to document information that is not easily accessible on the internet about these sites of memorialization. Furthermore, I argue that both sides of the armed struggle, now institutionalized political actors, have continued to memorialize and monumentalize their perspective of the conflict up until a point of saturation, which, in turn, coincides with the current crisis of Salvadoran democracy.

Sugar Vendil (New York City, New York)
Sugar Vendil is a composer, pianist, and interdisciplinary artist based in Lenapehoking/New York City, on stolen land of the Lenape people. She is a proud second generation Filipinx American. Vendil has been awarded multiple commissions to write works, including the ACF | Create commission to write a work for Boston-based duo Box Not Found (May 2020), and the 2019 Chamber Music America commission to write a new work for her ensemble, The Nouveau Classical Project, which she founded in 2008. She has held numerous artist residencies in institutions including the High Concept Labs in Chicago, Mabou Mines, the Target Margin Theater, and the Marble House Project. She holds a Master of Music degree in piano performance. Vendil has collaborated with many artists including choreographer Emily Johnson and composer-saxophonist Darius Jones. She has performed at a variety of venues, including BAM Fisher, MoMa PS1, National Sawdust, and The Stone.

In this talk, Cassidy Sugimoto argues that altmetrics have failed to deliver on their promise. She discusses criticisms of altmetrics (including those dealing with validity and reliability issues), but argues that the largest failure of altmetrics has been the focus on a single genre‰ÛÓthat is, the journal article‰ÛÓand setting altmetrics up as an alternative to citations. Sugimoto introduces the notion of outcomes-based evaluation and demonstrates that altmetrics cannot be equated with outcomes in this model. She urges the community to rethink ways in which we can build metrics that can capture larger societal impact. She discusses four axes of potential impact: production, dissemination, engagement, assessment. In each of these, she reviews various examples of current initiatives and challenges the audience to conceive of possible metrics to capture the desired outcome in each scenario.
Sulaiman Rahman (Frederick, Maryland)
Originally from the D.C. area and residing in Frederick, Maryland, singer/guitarist Sulaiman Rahman is the front man for the D.C.-based original rock band Marshall Fuzz producing a sound that is inspired by the blues rock tradition of classic rock bands like Black Sabbath, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream. Some critics have described them as a mashup of Black Sabbath and Muddy Waters. Alongside Vince Vezzi on bass and Nick Rodousakis on drums, they have gigged continuously since they formed the band in 2014.

"In the United States as in other countries, many people genuinely concerned to right historical wrongs have woven together an ideology often called “the woke left.” I will argue that this ideology is not, in fact, genuinely leftist, as it challenges many of the crucial ideas that have traditionally been central to all leftwing movements. I will argue for a new understanding of ideas of solidarity, justice and progress that have their roots in the much-maligned Enlightenment, and discuss how those ideas might be applicable today."
"My most recent book argued that Americans--and other peoples--have much to learn from Germany about historical reckoning. Historically, nations cultivate heroic narratives; failing that, they seek narratives of victimhood. Germany was the first nation to confront its vast crimes during World War II, and acknowledge that it had been neither hero nor victim but perpetrator.
This may seem obvious to outside observers, but this process was a long and hard one; in the first four decades after the war, West Germany considered itself the war’s worst victim. Dedicated grassroots work, along with foreign policy considerations, forced far-reaching changes in attitude. In the past two years, however, German historical reckoning has gone awry in many ways. I will discuss this, along with parallels to current developments in the U.S."

This talk will explore Dr. Sutton’s introduction to Digital and Public History through the Remembering Freedom: Longtown and Greenville History Harvest. It will discuss the method she termed Descendant Archival Practices– a method that reveals new ways of writing histories of Black women and acknowledges the preservation and memory work of Black women elders as an alternative to mainstream archives–and how she incorporates the skills and methodological approaches she learned from HASTAC and IDAH in her research and classrooms.

Steve Sweitzer is the owner and operator of Sweitzer Productions, which provides video and still photography, editing, writing, reporting and field producing services. He is also chief photographer and a reporter/producer for Pet Pals TV and Great Day TV with Patty Spitler, where he reports a regular segment called Steve’s Tech Talk. Sweitzer has more than 40 years of broadcast TV news experience — mostly at WISH-TV in Indianapolis — as chief photographer and news operations manager. He has been Indiana News Photographer of the Year and received first place in the Associated Press reporting category. For more than 20 years, Sweitzer has taught courses at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, where he received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, their highest honor for an adjunct professor.

Summary:
My project focuses on societal trends and changes surrounding homosexuality as expressed in the Indiana Daily Student (IDS). The paper is an ideal source to track change over time because it has been running with weekly publications since 1867. It also represents a unique perspective on events as it is both written for and by college students. After digitizing issues of the IDS, I will perform a text analysis in order to track how articles portray the LGBT community. Those articles will then be used to create a timeline that visualizes key moments in gay rights history and the public perspective of homosexuality.
Here, AFS continues the custom of including a public interview with a senior member of our field at the annual meeting. In this session, Robert Baron and Ana Cara will interview John Szwed, professor of music and jazz studies and director of the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University, about his life and work. Folk songs have been at the heart of the study of folklore since its beginnings, and the scholarship on song is one of the finest achievements of the field. But in recent years interest in songs, especially songs in English, has waned among scholars in both folklore and ethnomusicology. Despite some continuing important and innovative work, and public fascination with the subject, song no longer seems central to folklore studies. I will argue that song is a cultural universal, indeed a cultural imperative, and exists as a system similar to kinship systems, language, and economic relations. This will be a plea to resume interest in songs, and will suggest some means by which folklore studies might again assume responsibility for understanding the role of song in human history. Taide Pineda (Phoenix, Arizona)
Taide Pineda has been playing the guitar since high school and has been involved in the Phoenix local music scene with many well-known working bands for over 15 years. He’s a cutting-edge sole artist. He is one of the founding members of Highest Conspiracy, a band that mixes reggae, rock and roll, hip hop, and pop music in their original work. With a core group of musicians and the creation of Conspiracy Horns, which is a full two-piece horn section, Highest Conspiracy has created a following that has surpassed the normal media buzz. Taide released his first solo album, Big Dreams, in May 2020.

The practice of text mining in digital humanities is phallogocentric. Text mining, a particular kind of data mining in which predictive methods are deployed for pattern discovery in texts is primarily focused on pre-assumed meanings of The Word. In order to determine whether or not the machine has found patterns in text mining, we begin with a “ground truth” or labels that signify the presence of meaning. This work typically presupposes a binary logic between lack and excess (Derrida, Dissemination, 1981). There is meaning in the results or there is not. Sound, in contrast, is aporetic. To mine sound is to understand that ground truth is always indeterminate. Humanists have few opportunities to use advanced technologies for analyzing sound archives, however. This talk describes the HiPSTAS (High Performance Sound Technologies for Access and Scholarship) Project, which is developing a research environment for humanists that uses machine learning and visualization to automate processes for analyzing sound collections. HiPSTAS engages digital literacy head on in order to invite humanists into concerns about machine learning and sound studies. Hearing sound as digital audio means choosing filter banks, sampling rates, and compression scenarios that mimic the human ear.
Unless humanists know more about digital audio analysis, how can we ask, whose ear we are modeling in analysis? What is audible, to whom? Without knowing about playback parameters, how can we ask, what signal is noise? What signal is meaningful? To whom? Clement concludes with a brief discussion about some observations on the efficacy of using machine learning to facilitate generating data about spoken-word sound collections in the humanities.

Tarik Shah (Delmar, New York)
Tarik Shah is a musician, bassist, music teacher, professor level martial artist, practicing Muslim, and student of knowledge. Born and raised in New York City, Shah began playing the upright bass at age twelve and was a student of Slam Stewart. He has performed and recorded with jazz legends such as Ahmad Jamal, Dakota Staton, Vanessa Rubin, Ellis Marsalis, Barry Harris, Pharaoh Sanders and the late great songstress Betty Carter. Additionally, Shah performed with big bands such as the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and in small groups led by Red Rodney, Sir Roland Hanna, Abbey Lincoln, Harold Vick, Dr. Lonnie Smith and others. He has toured extensively nationally and internationally, including performing at the inaugural ball of President Bill Clinton in 1992. In 2018, he began rebuilding a career as a musician after wrongful conviction by the FBI in 2006. His group the Tarik Shah Quintet has performed in venues including New York City staples Smalls and Mezzrow.

This digital project is a part of my larger research project on exploration and photography in the Russian empire’s borderlands in Siberia and Central Asia (Mapping and Photographing Asiatic Russia: Imperial Landscapes of Exploration) and it will serve as an analytical instrument to bring data from different disciplines to visualize research results and make this project available to scholars and general public. This project aims to develop a digital map with data, using georeferencing, to link texts, historic maps, and photographs to examine scientific exploration and colonization of the Semirechie region in Central Asia in the early 20th century. This project will locate and visualize expeditions led by Prof. Vasilii Sapozhnikov (1862-1924), a botanist and glaciologist, and give a new possibility for complex interdisciplinary analysis of his findings and representations of the region. When this project is completed, it can be used for further analysis of the environmental transformation of landscape if it is linked with other data, including scientific records and aerial photography. This project can be also used as a prototype for analysis and visualization of other expeditions, like Sapozhnikov’s expeditions to the Altai mountains.
This research project links history of science and exploration, history of the Russian empire and its borderlands in Asia, visual studies, environmental studies, and spatial history, examining writings, photographs, and maps produced as a result of the expeditions in Jeti-su [Semirechie] in the late 19th-early 20th century. It aims to identify a role of scientific exploration in imperial colonization of the region and how explorations in geography, geology, glaciology, and botany represented the region as a territory and a natural resource to be incorporated into the empire. I will present this work-in-progress discussing steps taken, reflecting on the learning curves and research experience creating a database to collect and organize data I need for making ArcGIS web map, learning ArcGIS Pro for mapping the expeditions to Semirechie and Altai and using ArcGIS StoryMaps applications to visualize and present my research.

Librarians are working to counterbalance collections decisions and priorities that have historically marginalized the histories and experiences of people of color. Critical digital scholars have also highlighted the need to disrupt the replication of this marginalization in the digital sphere. Meanwhile concerns about diversity, cultural competence, and the marginalization of students of color in STEM and librarianship continue. Libraries can use critical digital collections in response. This presentation will focus on an open access digital resource built at Indiana University Bloomington Libraries - Land, Wealth, Liberation: The Making & Unmaking of Black Wealth in the United States - which has seen significant uptake from the campus and community and attracted diverse student workers. Librarians and students built this resource on a Libraries-hosted digital exhibition service based on Omeka S, which allowed for rapid, collaborative and distributed development, and integration of embedded audiovisual content and interactive timelines. The primary timeline spanning 1820-2020 offers an alternate construction of significant historical periods, tying them to events that directly affected black communities, such as the 1921 destruction of Greenwood, Tulsa, and the federal urban renewal policies initiated by the 1949 Housing Act. Librarians actively engaged students in developing their skills in scholarly communication, open access, and digital methods. The success of this project opens new doors for collaborative digital scholarship projects between the Libraries, the campus, and the community, and illustrates that digital collections focusing on the stories of historically marginalized groups can be an important means of addressing multiple concerns.

Tchin (New Jersey)
Tchin (pronounced ‘chin) is a nationally known, multi-award-winning artist. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia and lived in rural Virginia and Rhode Island where he received his early schooling. He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He is an accomplished metalsmith, author, flutemaker, educator, lecturer, folklorist, musician, entertainer, and clothes maker. His awards for performance and cultural work include Best of Show in Schemitzun, Connecticut, and Kituwah, North Carolina; Best of Division in the Southwest Museum, California, and Red Earth, Oklahoma; and first prize in the National American Cultural Art Festival, Maryland, as well as the SWAIA Indian Market, New Mexico (6). He lives with his wife and looks forward to many visits from his four daughters and nine grandchildren.

Qualtrics (qualtrics.com) is a software package for collecting survey data that has been widely adopted by leading research universities and major corporations. Many IU departments and centers are currently using Qualtrics, with more and more purchasing licenses each year. This speaks to the broad appeal of Qualtrics and the software’s flexibility of use.
This hands-on workshop will provide an overview of Qualtrics for use in creating and distributing online (web) surveys according to best practices. You will learn how to create an online survey from scratch, including how to format various types of questions and implement skip logic. You will also learn how to import your list of survey recipients, create an email invitation message, send the survey to recipients, and export your collected survey data. Time permitting, we will cover higher-end customizations and complex survey skip path methods. While we will focus on web survey examples, the skills that you will learn in this workshop can also be used to develop interview guides, data entry forms, and lab experiments in Qualtrics – you will learn that the tool is a versatile one!
