Dramatizes the manner in which the student committees organized projects for improving school elections, choosing proper representatives for student government, welcoming new students, and up-grading lunch room conditions. Emphasizes that good citizenship in the school produces good citizenship in the community.

The neighborliness of people in the South gives rise to many stories of help to others living nearby. The assistance with plowing, picking of crops and helping “catch up on work” is told, then the custom of a logrolling is pictured, wherein the neighbors gather to clear the fields of trees and logs. After the logrolling came the brush burning, or “woods burning” to further clear the land. This life is described, followed by the good times they had at a feast, after the work was done. Bash describes the value and beauty of the timber of our country, and how it helps hold the soil, gives cover for the animals, and is a valuable crop. Then she goes on a film expedition to an actual forest fire, showing the fire racing up the hillsides, destroying a forest, being fought by bucket, shovel, and even by planes bombing with chemicals before the fire is put out. Why special treatment for the American farmer? This is the questioned posed in this opening program and, using a story line built around the average family of Ed Harvey, the film seeks a more intelligent handling of agricultural policy on the national level. The program presents a definitive history of agriculture economics in an effort to explain the farmer’s vulnerable position in the constantly changing business cycle of a capitalistic society. Although the program does not advocate any definite policy, it does ask intelligent questions which tend to stimulate thinking on the farm problem.

Most children have been off on a trip with their families and this time Bash takes them on a camping trip where, on film, the sleep on the ground, hike in the mountains and fish in trout streams. The work seem like play on a trip, and Bash discusses the friendly atmosphere of working together and playing together. Of course, no trip is complete without a campfire at night where everyone shares songs and learns new ones. Bash includes several camping favorites: “Dig My Grave,” “Hey Ho, Nobody Home,” “Camping Trail” and sings by the campfire.
Bash tells us that there were no clocks or watches aboard the Mayflower and that the watch was invented after the first settlers in America had landed. The history of mechanical methods to tell time is told by Bash from the marking of shadows by the sundial through early water clocks, notched candles on to the developments of clocks. The story of money is one of a way of life, says Bash in this program. Money was not always coin or paper notes. There were many things which early pioneers could use to buy things. In Virginia, they used tobacco; in South Carolina, rice; Indians used shells and beads; trappers of the North could buy a gun with furs, and the man of New England used fish or timber for payment. Songs include “Sixpence,” “When I Was Single” and “Ribbon Bow.”
This program begins before there were any schools in this country. Families taught their children at night after the chores were finished and in some cases a master craftsman taught young apprentices to read and write after work. The one room school house is recreated and the difficulties of supplies for classes are discussed. The Lillian Patterson dancers intersperse dances showing the play and games of early days. Host Bash Kennett describes the danger of fire aboard the clipper ships. Visits the San Francisco Bay's "Phoenix" fire boat, which is shown docked next to the Hills Brothers Coffee Company, and presents a demonstration of how the boat pumps water. Explains fire control in modern ships and discusses the important role of firemen who work in this role. Includes a performance of the traditional "I Grieve My Lord".
Bash takes a trip to an old general store, driving up in a buggy as the early settler might have done. In the store she shops for old-time items and tells of their uses. She gets coffee from a big red coffee grinder and her meat is chopped in an old-fashioned hand cranked meat chopper. The stove and the “TV of the early day,” the stereopticon, are observed. Songs include “Blue Tail Fly” and “Bought Me a Cat.”
Bash talks about the brave men who have sailed small boats into the open ocean in search of fish from earliest times. They risk their lives and gamble their fortunes in these ventures. Bash takes a film trip to Fisherman’s Wharf to watch the mending of nets, the bustle of preparation and to see the fishing boats return to unload their catch of fish and crabs. Songs include “Blow the Man Down” and “Goodbye My Lover, Goodbye.”
Bash Kennett tells of the early American glassmakers, showing rare pieces made by Baron Stiegel, Caspar Wistar, Amelung and others. She describes the method of glassmaking, uses the glass throughout our history, the invention of the mass-produced bottle and the modern use of glass. The hat you wear tells much about where you live, what kind of life you lead and what the climate is, says Bash in this program. Hats can be fun and in this program the story of hats is started with the earliest head coverings used in ancient times. Modern reptiles have body structures and characteristics much like their giant ancestors of long ago. This will be an introduction to the contemporary reptiles, the ones living now which we can watch and observe and study. On this program, Meyer Bornstein, who is studying biology at Northeastern University, will introduce through living examples the four kinds of reptiles; alligators, lizard, snakes and turtles. He will tell you about their habits, and show you how he cares for and learns from reptiles as pets.
Bird identification has escaped the laboratory stage in the past 20 years. Frequently the identification of living things down to the species, depends upon features not really observable. But naming a bird (in some cases even to a subspecies) can now be done quite accurately through a system of field identification. Perfected by outstanding field observers like Ludlow Agrisom and Roger T. Peterson and put into book form and general circulation by Peterson, this system has created a hobby full of leisure for many people. This program will introduce the elements of knowing a bird when you see it, alive and in its environment. Graphic art and film will illustrate how you look for stance, pattern, habits and combinations of marking to identify a bird. Betty Sears, “Discovery’s” artist, appears on this program with the sketch book she uses on birding watching expeditions.
In the case of mammals, bones can tell us a lot. Form the extinct mastodon and mammoth, or the ancient horse, one can learn lessons about the development of the mammals by merely examining the teeth and bone structures these early creatures left behind. You will meet the mammals and learn about their classification and development by examining skulls and live animals. Six orders of mammals will be considered: the Marsupialor opossums; the chiroptera or bats; the Carnivora or carnivores; the Artiodactyl or even-toed (like the horse); the Rodentia or rodents; and the Lagamorpha or rabbits.
